77 Project Downfall

Wang seethed as he left the Cafe De La Paix. He could see the superiority oozing off Nico.

The man kept moonlighting as a fake Voss, poking into places where he's not wanted.

He'd known the exact kind of person Nico was from the first day they'd met. From that superior attitude at the bank and more recently, at the sky lounge.

He'd taken Alyssa with him. He had let Nico go out of the goodness of his heart but this time, he would show him that there were consequences to reaching above your station.

Nico had tried getting into his head, saying nonsense about experiences. That was why he was an idiot. Nobody needs that rubbish to close a deal.

He knew he had the numbers. Eidolon knew that. So, why was he feeling uneasy?

He stepped into his car and began driving back to his office. As the scenery sped by, he began thinking things through.

What was Sunset Inn's biggest advantage? Their reputation.

They'd somehow managed to earn themselves a valuation of five hundred million and the media was waxing lyrically about them.

So, all he needed to do was destroy that reputation and the deal would finally be closed. Eidolon Interactive would see that he was the right choice all along.

He laughed to himself, gripping his steering wheel tighter. "You'll learn, Voss. Whether you like it or not."

What is done with weeds that grow where they are not wanted? They're destroyed, of course.

His car screeched to a halt and he jumped out, tossing the key to his personal valet.

He ignored the greetings, heading straight to his office.

Once there, he slipped behind his desk, booting up his computer. With a few clicks, he pulled up his meticulously organized files on Nico and Sunset Inn.

He had been collecting the data ever since the project merged on the news. He'd wanted to see how far the plebian could grow but now, the information was about to serve a greater purpose.

"Time to remind an ant of his place." Wang muttered to himself as he worked.

It didn't take too long for him to construct a narrative.

Using the limited financial details he had on Sunset Inn, he carefully constructed a series of 'insider documents.'

He chuckled at his document of fake timelines showing the project falling behind schedule, complete with falsified communication logs with contractors.

It wasn't that hard to exaggerate a budget sheet telling an interesting story. A story of doubling project costs and resources drain.

And for the final nail in the coffin, a 'leaked' series of emails showing internal conflict in the organization with pending lawsuits that they've been trying to keep hidden.

He compiled the documents into a folder and gave it what he thought was a pretty apt name.

Project Downfall.

With that done, he picked up his personal phone and dailed a number. Not just any number but Maria's number. The same Maria whose career thrived on sensationalism.

He'd found her completely by accident due to his AI trawling the web but it had been worth it.

She was the brilliant mind behind a few sites notorious for dragging companies through the mud for clicks. And the best part? She wrapped it all up in allegations and parodies, making other news outlet pick up the story and fan the flames, using it to escape the long reach of the law.

Fortunately for Wang, as she'd done it before, she'd do it again. Especially for the right price.

"Maria." Wang greeted when she finally answered. "It's been a while, hasn't it?"

"Wang Tae Bin." Maria drawled, pleased to hear from him. She knew just as much as he did that this wasn't a social call and someone was about to get thrashed.

"What can I do for you?" She asked.

"I have a story here that's going to make your numbers skyrocket." He said with confidence.

"Go on."

Wang explained to her, outlining exactly what he had in mind.

"Why are you bringing this to me?" She asked him, unable to hide the note of interest in her voice.

"Because I trust your discretion." Wang lied with a grin on his face. "And because we both know this is exactly the kind of story your audience eats up."

Maria hesitated for only a moment before agreeing. "Send me everything you have. If it checks out, I'll publish by morning."

Wang smirked, transferring the files to her encrypted email. "You won't regret it."

The line went dead and Wang tossed his phone on his table, leaning back in his chair. A grin grew on his face. "Now we wait."

High pitched laughter filled the room. All he needed was a cat to stroke and he'd definitely qualify as a bond villain.

The next morning, Wang sipped his espresso as he sat by his penthouse window overlooking the city.

His eyes was fixed on the screen of his laptop as he scrolled through the sites. Business Crier, Money Pulse, Market Stocks, they were all saying the same thing.

He leaned back in his chair, a grin on his face at the tune being sang.

"Sunset Inn Faces Financial Turmoil: Delays and Mismanagement Alleged."

"Trouble in Paradise? Boutique Hotel Dream Stalls Amid Financial Crisis."

"Sources Claim Sunset Inn May Collapse Before Completion."

Maria had done her work cleanly. The articles were filled with the details Wang had fabricated, the anonymous leaks flooding the Internet.

With all the juicy details on display, social media exploded.

Those who had been critics of Sunset Inn latched onto the story like a babe with his mother's teats.

They began dissecting every detail and Wang couldn't help feeling pride. His fake documents were holding up even under scrutiny.

That was the power of AI. Something Nico would never understand.

Even the influencers and conspiracy theorists joined the discussion with one side questioning the viability of the project and the other side creating outrageous stories about Nico. Some even suggested he was Logan Voss' hidden son.

Wang laughed at that. If only they knew how pathetic he was. A fraud wearing a pretty suit.

It didn't matter. With this, people will slowly begin to see exactly what he'd been able to see from the first day he'd laid eyes on Nico Voss.

They'll finally see that not all that glitters is Gold.
