Ye Lu shuddered all over, her face deathly pale, her hands and feet trembling.

Wolves.

That sound was the howl of a wild wolf; even though she had never heard it with her own ears, she instantly knew.

She thought they had always been lucky, because as they traveled these past days – whether due to luck or the destruction humans had wrought upon nature – there seemed to be fewer wild animals in these forests, and they hardly encountered any dangerous creatures.

They had only come across two pythons and a wild boar, all of which were killed by Third Young Master Jun’s sharpshooting.

She thought their luck would continue.

But she never expected that Third Young Master Jun would suddenly fall ill and become unconscious, and at such a critical moment, they would encounter wolves.

She felt like she was going crazy, her heart seeming ready to burst.

Why, why must it be so hard, so difficult? She bowed her head, tears dripping down.

Yet, looking at Third Young Master Jun lying there unconscious, she didn’t know where the courage came from, but she steeled her heart, fumbling out a gun from her luggage, hands shaking as she loaded the bullets.

Now, she could only rely on herself for everything. Before it was him protecting her, but now it was her turn to protect him, determined not to let him die here.

She crawled to the mouth of the tent, peering outside, and saw a pair of luminous green eyes flickering in the underbrush not far off, crouching and watching intently, yet not daring to come too close because of the fire; wolves are afraid of fire.

But the wolf was cunning and didn’t want to leave easily, looking for an opportunity to pounce.

Shortly after, it noticed Ye Lu, its forest-cold green eyes locking with hers, the savage and chilling gaze of the beast tightening her heart – she certainly wasn’t unafraid.

With a howl, the wolf let out another fierce threatening sound, its breathing harsh and frightening.

Ye Lu held the gun, her eyes fierce.

Tonight, either it dies, or they die. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"Die!" she shouted fiercely, pulling the trigger without hesitation.

Perhaps it was divine intervention, or perhaps her string of bad luck had finally turned around – she heard the wolf let out a miserable wail before it rolled on the ground a few times, struggling and then dying.

Ye Lu hugged the gun, collapsing to the ground, her breathing rapid, her body almost spent, ha, she actually killed a wolf, even the ferocious wild wolf died by her hand.

A sense of courage surged in her heart, and with a wry smile, it seemed that when pushed to the brink, one’s potential truly erupts!

After this crisis, she dared not sleep, sitting at the entrance of the tent, guarding Third Young Master Jun, holding the gun, watching vigilantly outside.

It was in the middle of the night when she heard Third Young Master Jun’s weak cough, and she was jolted awake from her drowsiness, pouncing over with a mix of alarm and joy, her tears falling uncontrollably as she broke down in sobs.

She was so afraid he would remain unconscious forever, afraid that he would never open his eyes again.

Thankfully, it seemed that heaven still showed mercy to this pair of star-crossed lovers.

"Medicine... bring me the medical kit," Third Young Master Jun grunted, his face contorted in pain, so white as to not have a trace of color.

Ye Lu had no idea which medicine he needed, frantically bringing all the medicines from the kit to him, but he, covered in a cold sweat, asked for the one in the hidden compartment of the kit.

Ye Lu was stunned. What kind of medicine was hidden so secretly in the compartment, was it to keep it from her?

Taking out the packet from the compartment and seeing the drug label on it, her face turned pale, looking at him in disbelief. Was this... narcotics?

She had never thought that he would get involved with such things.

Although he had always been reckless and indulgent, he never touched these – when did it start? She quickly realized that it was probably a few days ago, to alleviate pain during the illness, that he had used these substances, managing to keep up his strength to continue their journey until now.
