Isn't It Love?
Chapter 51: Number One Little Sister
Kai stood frozen in front of the girl. His heart was pounding hard, like a drum being beaten loudly inside his chest.
All the details were too similar. The simple side ponytail, slightly messy from the wind, her wide eyes full of confusion, even the way she tilted her head a little when she was puzzled.
Everything felt like Mimi. His little sister from his previous life when he was still "Ryan".
Is this... really her? Or am I just hallucinating because I miss her too much?
"Mi... Mimi?" Kai’s voice came out soft, almost inaudible among the hustle and bustle of people passing by to look at the mural.
The girl furrowed her brow deeper. "Huh? Who? Do I know you?" She stepped back, her eyes full of caution.
Kai immediately realized he was being too aggressive. His right hand, which had just touched the girl’s shoulder, now reached out again, unconsciously trying to grab her arm. "Wait... I..."
The girl immediately pulled her arm back. "Sorry, but I really don’t know you." Her voice was polite but firm. "You might have the wrong person."
Kai swallowed. The memories of "Ryan" in his head spun fast like a broken old film.
Mimi playing games while eating pudding, Mimi who liked to nag when her brother forgot to buy ice cream, Mimi who always said "You’re so dumb, big bro" with a smile. All of it spilled out in seconds.
Calm down, Ryan. Don’t scare her. She’s not Mimi... or maybe she is Mimi but lost her memories, but if that’s the case, how did she get here? No matter how you look at it, she really resembles Mimi.
Kai took a deep breath, forcing a smile that he hoped didn’t look strange. "Sorry... I’m really sorry. You... look a lot like someone I... left without saying proper goodbye. My little sister. Her name is Mimi. I... was a bit shocked because your appearance really, really looks like hers."
The girl was still looking at him suspiciously, but at least she didn’t run away immediately. "Your little sister? I’m not Mimi. My name is Ame. Ame Lilac. Though sometimes people call me Amy."
Ame... Amy... Mimi... they are too similar.
Kai felt his chest tighten. He scratched the back of his neck, trying to look relaxed. "Ame, huh... umm... sorry again. I’m Kai. Kai Clove. Are you... new to Wynwood?"
Ame nodded slowly. "Yeah, just moved to Miami last week. Just walking around looking at the murals. They say it’s nice in here."
The girl’s voice was soft, similar to Mimi when she was feeling lazy. Kai felt like hugging her, but he knew that would make things even weirder. He shoved both hands into his jacket pockets to avoid doing something stupid.
"Alone?" asked Kai.
"No. Mom’s shopping nearby, She make me tagged along with her." Ame glanced back, as if looking for someone. "May I ask question... earlier you said I look like your little sister? How similar are we?"
"Too similar," Kai answered honestly. "The hair, the eyes, even the way you stand. I thought I was seeing things."
Ame smiled a little, but still kept her distance. "Maybe it’s just a coincidence. I’m an only child, don’t have any siblings."
Only child...
Before Kai could ask again, a woman’s voice called from a distance. "Ame! Sweetie, let’s go home!"
Ame turned her head. "Coming, Mom! Just a sec!" She looked back at Kai. "Sorry, I have to go. Nice meeting you, Kai. I hope you find... Mimi, yeah, I hope you two can meet again. Bye~"
Kai could only nod. "Yeah... take care, Ame."
The girl gave a small wave before jogging toward her mom. Kai stood there, watching her back as it got farther away. Her posture, the way she walked, even the way she held her mom’s hand—all of it was too familiar.
She’s not Mimi... but why does it feel like Mimi?
Kai let out a heavy sigh. He turned and walked back toward his friends. Kevin and the others were still standing near the big mural, laughing and taking pictures.
"Kai, Kai~ What were you doing earlier? Chasing after some random girl?" Kevin immediately grinned wide as Kai approached. "Ooh la la, Kai has a crush?"
Kai rolled his eyes. "No. Just the wrong person. She really looks like... a distant relative of mine."
The other friends immediately teased him. "Wow, a pretty distant relative like that? You sure she just looks like her?"
"Enough, don’t talk about it. Let’s keep walking," Kai changed the subject quickly. He didn’t want to think about Ame for too long. It felt too sad seeing that face after he had been living in this body for a few months.
They continued walking around Wynwood. The colorful murals on the walls looked even more beautiful as the sun started moving west. The late afternoon air in Miami felt cool, but Kai’s mind was still stuck on the girl named Ame.
If she really is "Mimi" who was moved to this world like me... why are her memories gone?
Kai shook his head gently. He shouldn’t be too paranoid. Today was supposed to be for relaxing, not getting even more confused.
The afternoon grew later. The sky started turning orange-red. They decided to go home. Kai walked a bit behind, hands in his jacket pockets, his mind still wandering.
Wynwood at dusk felt magical. Lights started turning on in small cafes, street art became more alive with the golden hour glow. But Kai didn’t really enjoy it. He kept thinking about Ame.
She said she’s an only child. But her expressions, her voice... too similar.
"Kai! Hurry up buddy, the bus is coming soon!" Kevin called from the front.
"Yeah, yeah," Kai quickened his pace.
They parted ways at the bus stop. Kai took a different bus because of his home direction. Throughout the ride home, he sat in the back seat, head resting against the window. His mind was still full of Ame Lilac.
The bus stopped at a stop near his housing complex. Kai got off, walking along the sidewalk that was starting to get dark. Street lights turned on one by one. The night air in Miami felt cool.
Suddenly, a luxury car stopped next to him. The front window rolled down slowly.
"Kai?"
Kai turned. Lily Campbell sat in the back seat, smiling sweetly at him. Her driver waited patiently.
"Huh? Lily? What are you doing here?"
Lily opened the back door. "I just got back from ummm... never mind about that. Get in, I’ll take you home."
Kai shook his head. "No need. It’s only a few feet from here..."
Lily smiled even wider. She took out her phone, typed quickly, then showed the screen to Kai.
A message just sent to Risa.
⌈Hey Risa, I’m borrowing your brother for a bit~ I’ll take him home, okay.⌋
Risa’s reply came immediately.
⌈Hmph. Okay. Don’t take him too long.⌋
Lily winked one eye. "See.~ now get in."
Kai sighed. He couldn’t refuse anymore. "...Alright."
He got into the luxury car. The smell of expensive interior hit him right away. Lily smiled contentedly as the car moved slowly.
"So... where are we going?" asked Kai.
Lily just smiled mysteriously. "It’s a secret~"
Kai stared out the window as the car drove. Night was falling in Miami but his mind was still split in two, between Ame who looked like Mimi, and now Lily who suddenly appeared.
