Chapter 149: The Alpha

Before long, bodies were the only thing that surrounded him, piled high around him. He sucked in a breath, his body heavy; he rested his head against the sword. "Wow...."

Wargs are indeed difficult monsters to deal with with their swiftness and intelligence. They’ll give any Awakener a run for his money, but in front of a single sword, they cowered.

It was like trying to fight a whirlwind of steel, and not only is it that his sword is fast, each strike carries the power to cut into two. That is Alex’s fighting style; maybe not the fastest in the team, but in the form of power, it’ll be the strongest.

"...But I get tired easily because of it," Alex said. He was still in the same place he was when the fighting started. He saw some of the monsters standing back in their lair. "The Alpha must be there as well."

Maybe the monsters thought he’d run after them, but one thing Alex has learned this past month and during Catena’s fight is to calculate things.

With the way his body is now, he’s sure he’ll get eaten if he runs into their midst. The Alpha must be planning some kind of trap so he copied Catena and just sat there. But he won’t go as far as to start eating so he did as Azaroth would do. He began to process his essence.

Since he gained a lot of essence from this fight, it’ll be best if he replenishes before he faces the boss.

Outside, Azaroth looked at the screen coldly; he wasn’t surprised that all of them were being cautious. This tends to happen when the realization hits hard that you’re responsible for yourself. If it was a team hunt, Alex would have been urging them to press forward.

The crypt Master chuckled. "That’s a wise choice."

Commands Apex grunted. "Wargs, I never liked those monsters and it gets even worse when they advance to higher levels. But the way that boy fights, one strike for one monster. That’s impressive. But."

Captain Kael Hound nodded. "But his flaw is the footwork technique; he might not have a reason now, but at a higher level, when monsters have the intelligence to equal humans, then they won’t just rush at him."

Crypt Master said. "I’ve been looking into it, a footwork technique that will compile the way he fights. It’ll give him mobility and yet the firmness and rigidity to swing powerful strikes. But for now."

Alex finished processing, and he opened his eyes; it was surprising that the monsters didn’t try to take advantage. That must mean they have something else planet.

He stood and stretched; then he shoved dead monsters out of his way as he made it towards the lair. "Now, are you going to come at me, or do I have to hunt you down like rats? I don’t enjoy doing that but....!"

The monsters were moving even further away from him, and when he reached the hollow rocks, they retreated into the main cave that was overlooking his way. Red eyes shone from the darkness.

Alex was getting annoyed at this point, but he had no choice but to continually. He took a step and then froze. "Aahahaa." He laughed, and then, with his left leg still suspended, he slashed the ground in front of him.

The dust-covered leaves fell away and revealed a pit. "Classic, they dig a hole trap for me to fall in. Classic, but a fall this small can harm me... hmm..but it can be a moment of distraction for them to jump me. They are intelligent for a monster their level."

He jumped over the pit, and then it was straight to the cave; the opening was big, and I could admit large numbers of wargs going in at a single time, and the sun didn’t penetrate inside. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦

Alex got why they were trying to lure him inside the cave, then, his visibility! They’re trying to fight him while he can’t see! But they made a mistake because he remembered the light formation that Kael thought of him, and with that in mind, he stepped inside the cool, dark cave.

The cave exploded into growls and yowls as if they had been starving to have a go at him. "Good boys, close your eyes tightly!" Alex then took his instruction and pumped power into his formation, and inside the cave, there was light. So bright it was like a small star appeared.

It was brief before it turned into a small glow, and with the painful screams going around, Alex jumped into action. The monsters are now blinded. He turned their trap against them!

He flung himself at the monsters running around blindly, and his sword whooshed through the air with the speed and accuracy he had so horned.

Monsters fell before him, blind to even knowing they were getting attacked. He cleared the way forward as he went deeper into the cave; unlike tunnel cave, this one is a big one like a hall, and at the center of it stood the Alpha.

He was too far away to have been affected by the light and even then, there’s natural sunlight that’s coming from the roof of the cave where a small hole is.

The Alpha was crouched on a small rock, and unlike the black fur of the others, his skin was Iron grey and slicked to his body. It wasn’t only the monster there either; five other monsters were standing around it.

The Alpha looked at him with cold predatory eyes that shone with the intelligence of an aware being.

"Oh shit," Alex grumbled when he saw the Alpha and the monsters arranged around it. The five monsters must be the most powerful fighters of the pack and must serve the boss directly.

But that wasn’t really what made Alex pause; it was because the monster was going through an evolution, already on its ladder to another level. No wonder its intelligence was also so high.
