"Something’s wrong with your voice. What’s going on?" The phone pressed closely to Yan Ting’s ear allowed him to pick up her thick nasal tone, a tell-tale sign she had been crying.

"Nothing!" The courage she’d initially mustered to confide in him dissipated instantly. When she spoke, her voice was choked with tears.

"Tell me the truth!" His tone suddenly dropped, laced with urgency and concern.

"I’ve severed ties with my father." Lin Banxia bitterly laughed at herself.

On the other end of the line, Yan Ting was momentarily stunned. Then, he chuckled lightly, "You’re really brave. But your father is a power-hungry, self-serving man; your values were never aligned to begin with. If it’s over, then so be it. From now on, I’ll take care of you."
