Then she was about to reach out, but unexpectedly, just as her hand started to extend, James Black’s hand beat her to it, taking hold in the next second. Jane Sampson then saw James Black shake hands with the little soldier who had reached out to him.

The soldier probably didn’t react or notice due to excitement and happily shook hands, then quickly let go and ran off with a big smile, shouting as he went.

"Ah~ Ah~ I shook hands with Goddess Sampson! I’m not washing my hands for the rest of the month~" The little soldier shouted, cheerfully heading back to his dormitory.

"Could he be a dummy?" Lieutenant Johnson stood to the side, watching in a daze, then his gaze fell on Jane Sampson’s hand held by James Black, mumbling to himself that the Chief was truly stingy, not even willing to let his wife’s hand be shaken by someone else.

"Lieutenant Johnson, could you please pass on a message for me? Let them not let the shooting team know about my relationship with James Black," Jane Sampson said, not feeling reassured. With the shooting team being a blur of many voices, she feared that if too many people knew, it would turn into a total mess. It was okay for her, but she was worried about it affecting James Black’s personal image.

"Don’t worry, sister-in-law, we members of the guard team know what should and shouldn’t be said," Lieutenant Johnson gave Jane Sampson a reassuring look.

"Let’s go," James Black tugged at Jane Sampson’s hand, leading her into the building.

Jane Sampson followed behind James Black, pouting. "What were you doing just now? I was just shaking hands with one of your subordinates, why did you suddenly stick out a hand to hold mine?"

"Did I agree?" James Black threw back a rhetorical question at Jane Sampson, "Did I agree to you shaking hands with others?"

Jane Sampson was stunned for a while, then harrumphed, "You’re so cat-like!"

She lifted her head and haughtily ignored James Black.

James Black held Jane Sampson’s hand all the way home before he let go. Jane Sampson walked in front, changing her shoes first. When James Black came in after her, he saw her take stuff out of her pockets and place it on the tea table.

It was really a bunch of wild fruits, all kinds, some even crushed with their juices oozing out.

And Jane Sampson was squeezing one of the fruits with a painfully distressed expression on her face.

"Where’s the peach?" James Black asked, standing in front of Jane Sampson.

Jane Sampson looked at the crushed wild fruit with a frustrated expression and, without even looking at James Black, pointed next to her, mumbling to herself that this was one of her favorite wild fruits to eat—red, with a sweet and sour taste. She hadn’t dared to eat more while hiding in the tree and had been thinking of coming back to soak it in milk, or put it in the refrigerator so James Black could prepare some yogurt for her to mix it with.

Unfortunately, it was ruined.

James Black’s irritation followed the direction Jane Sampson was pointing and glanced over, frowning with displeasure, "Not this one."

When they were under the tree, what she took out to please him clearly wasn’t this one; it was larger, redder, and had a better appearance.

Only then did Jane Sampson give James Black another look, seemingly confused, and asked, "Which one?"

"The one you said you specifically saved for me," James Black asked, "Did you throw it away?"

"I gave it to Peter Gingery," Jane Sampson replied.

James Black’s face soured, thinking it might as well have been thrown away!

Seeing James Black’s displeasure, Jane Sampson straightened up and asked, "Didn’t you say you didn’t want it this afternoon? So I gave it to Peter Gingery."

"Did I tell you I didn’t want it?" James Black asked.

"..." Jane Sampson touched her chin, realizing he hadn’t explicitly said he didn’t want it, but then again, he hadn’t taken it when she offered, so she had assumed he was disdainful of it, right?
