Captured By The Cold Detective (BL)
Chapter 236: Cat And Mouse
The truth of Wu Liang’s mysterious death unfolded under the disbelieving gazes of the officers.
After dealing with Wu Liang, the imposter walked out of the camera’s range to carry the unconscious Wu Yuan back. He placed the bloody knife in Wu Yuan’s hand to plant a false impression on the teenager that he was the one who had killed his father. His movements, albeit casual and laid-back, spoke of confidence and ease belonging to someone who had done something like this countless times before. Not only that, he was also humming! The sheer audacity!
After arranging the crime scene as he pleased, he finally moved toward the pinhole camera. Everyone held their breath once ’Qin Zhen’s’ face came close to the screen. It was a familiar face, but the expression, the aura, the way he carried himself, and oh especially those eyes... they were the exact opposite of the ’Qin Zhen’ who had sat in the interrogation room before!
The man’s eyes curved and he waved into the camera. "Hello, officers of Yuyang Municipal Bureau~"
Everyone: "!!!"
He blinked as though recalling something and added after a brief pause, "Oh, I almost forgot. Hello to you too, the Interpol agent who has come all the way to this country," he grinned brightly and gave a mock salute. "I hope that you’re satisfied with my hospitality."
Rong Simo shot up standing, his face contorted in anger. "This fucker...!" Meanwhile, Tak Jung-Hwa’s casual smile remained on his face. Only the twitch of his fingers and the decreasing temperature in his eyes betrayed his inner turmoil.
What was called a blatant act of provocation? This!!
A few hot-blooded officers also could not restrain their rage. The atmosphere in the meeting room reached its boiling point as foul curses reverberated one atop of the other. Even Director Zhang’s face was ashen as he stared at the projector screen.
As it turned out, the imposter was not done yet. "Do you like this gift of mine?" He singsong-ed, as if he was not standing in the middle of a crime scene with a bleeding body under his feet. As if he had not just destroyed the life of an innocent teenager. "I have even wrapped it perfectly for you..." he let out a mirthful chuckle.
"Don’t blame yourself for your inability to catch up with me," he continued to say. "But don’t worry, I will continue to give you guys enough motivation for doing so. After all, a cat and mouse game will not be exciting if there’s only one cat, right?" Before anyone could even process what he meant by that, he reached out toward the camera and — click.
The video ended just like that.
If previously, their blood was boiling in rage due to the imposter’s outright provocation, now they only felt chills seeping into their limbs, causing their hearts to run cold. What... What did he mean by enough motivation? What did he mean by the cat and mouse game? And moreover, more than one cat? It meant... more than one predator who was out to hunt for prey?
In the end, who exactly was the ’cat’ and ’mouse’ in the game?
Silence. It was so silent inside the meeting room that one could hear a pin drop. Everyone was still struggling to digest what they had just seen and heard. They could not believe it. Someone had been so... brazen, so overt in his challenge toward the law enforcers and worse, he was right when he said that no one could catch up with him! If... If today Cui Yan had not caused a mess in Yuyang Hospital Center, if Cui Yan had not told them about this house where they found the evidence, they would have still been running around like a horde of headless chickens. It was so... humiliating!
The more terrifying the opponent was, the greater the pressure on their shoulders.
Right now, they were so ashamed that they did not even dare to curse. After all, it was a solid fact that the imposter had led them around by the nose. And they were utterly helpless against him! How... How were they supposed to capture someone like that?!
"Focus," Li Zhi’s calm voice cut through the heavy gloom in the air. "I won’t deny that our opponent this time is extremely brilliant, wicked and dangerous. Even worse, he is an expert when it comes to human’s psychology. But don’t let his words get to you. Keep today’s frustration and anger inside your heart, but your head has to remain clear. The more he affects you, the quicker you will lose." Seeing that everyone was starting to escape from the trance they were in, he added, "Moreover, I don’t believe that someone’s perfect. Do you know what will be his downfall?"
"...What?" Kang Guanyu asked in a timid voice.
"His arrogance," he gave a firm answer. "He has been playing with us for so long and as you can see, it has started to get into his head. The more he is certain that we can’t catch him, the more we have to prove that he’s wrong. What do you say?"
"I agree with Captain Li."
Everyone’s gaze turned to the one who had just spoken – Tak Jung-Hwa. The Interpol agent had an easy smile on his face, yet his peach blossom eyes were blazing with the flame of passion. "The more difficult it is to catch a criminal, the more exciting it will be, don’t you think so?"
"T–That’s right!" An officer from the Narcotics Division piped in passionately. "Our work these past few years has been bland like watery soup. What’s wrong with a little flavor this time? Imagine chasing after such a treacherous criminal, it’s just like starring in a high-quality blockbuster movie!"
In the end, it was this one sentence that thawed the ice between them. Everyone dissolved into laughter and the atmosphere lightened. They knew that this was not some blockbuster movie. Actors could go off the screen when they died, but if an accident happened in real life, then it would really be the end for them. However, just like the saying ’every cloud has its silver lining’, they could not let themselves wallow in self-misery and pity. Right now, they had to focus on tracking after the criminal!
"What my Captain said is absolutely right!" Kang Guanyu also did not want to lose. He pumped his fists and declared, "We’re going to catch that criminal no matter what!"
"Agree," Chen Lian added quietly.
"What?" Kang Guanyu cupped his ear and exclaimed, "Say it louder! I can’t hear you!"
Seeing that they had started to fool around with each other, Rong Simo cleared his throat to drag them back to the situation at hand. "Alright, so with this video, we can confirm that Wu Yuan is an innocent victim. But..." his face grew solemn. "It doesn’t explain the drugs in his body. How did Wu Yuan get exposed to them? When and where? And in the video, we can clearly see that the imposter and Old Five knew each other – how? We don’t know the answer to all of them."
"Moreover," Tak Jung-Hwa chimed in. "I can say with a hundred percent confidence that Cui Yan and the imposter in the video are not the same person. What are we supposed to do with him now?"
That’s right, it was the crux of the problem. They were clearly aware that Cui Yan had been sent here as a scapegoat, but because of the evidence he had offered to the police, they could not let him go just like that. Not when they knew that he was in cahoots with the imposter.
"But why?" An officer raised the question, puzzled. "Even a fool knows that he has been sent here as a scapegoat, so there’s no reason that Cui Yan doesn’t realize it himself. So why is he still willing to do it?"
