Chapter 195: Heping Nursing Home

Meanwhile, in the Heping Nursing Home.

A man entered the bathroom and locked the door, turning on the faucet as a background sound. He held a phone to his ear and said, "Hey, it’s just as you predicted. The police are here. Two? No... it’s three people. The third one is the guy from Interpol."

He listened to what the person on the other side of the line was saying and creases formed on his brows, his lips tugged down in displeasure. "I know, you don’t need to tell me twice. I will do as you say. Remember, don’t go back on your words or else... we will go down together."

Without waiting for the other person to reply, he directly hung up on the call, pulled out the sim card and broke it into two. Then he flushed it down the toilet.

"Welcome to Heping Care Home!" The Admin greeted them warmly. When she smiled, the crow’s feet around her eyes deepened. It made her look very kind and friendly. "May I ask what you need, Sirs?"

The interior of the nursing home was quite cozy. Even though it was not luxurious, it still gave off the impression of being home. A large TV was mounted on one side of the wall of the lobby where the elderly people could gather together to watch comedy shows.

The three new visitors were tall and handsome, each carrying their own unique charms. They immediately became the source of attention, especially from young nurses who could not stop sneaking glances at them furtively.

They had agreed earlier to keep a low profile throughout. Thus Kang Guanyu, as the appointed representative, beckoned the Admin and whispered to her in a small voice, "I’m sorry, Madam. We’re the police, here to investigate some official matters. Can you please not make a ruckus...?"

The smile on the Admin’s face froze. Ordinary people would certainly panic when police showed up in front of their door without any warning, and the woman was no exception. However, because Kang Guanyu looked really harmless just like a little goofy hamster, she swiftly regained her composure. Only the stiffness on the corner of her lips betrayed her nervousness within. "T–The police? Is there something wrong?"

Kang Guanyu made a gesture with his finger to the noisy surroundings. "Hehe, I think we should talk somewhere more private. What do you think?"

The Admin also realized that the three men were attracting a lot of attention. Snapping back to attention, she gestured for the men to follow her. "Ah, yes, yes. Please come with me!" 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

Mu Yuze and Tak Jung-Hwa gave a nod in acknowledgement and trailed behind the Admin. Mu Yuze deliberately slowed his steps and scanned the area, but so far he could not find anything amiss. Everything looked just like how they really were.

"Um..." the Admin twisted her fingers and let out a nervous laugh. "Shall we go to the director’s office?"

"The director is here?" Kang Guanyu was pleasantly surprised. "That’s even better! Then, we’d like to trouble you to lead us there, Madam."

Perhaps it was an occupational disease, the Admin could not resist introducing them to the nursing home as they walked. The first floor consisted of a living room – where they had just been – dining room, recreation room, kitchen, administrator office, and a larger lawn on the back where the elderly would exercise each morning. There were approximately fifty elderly people here with two occupying one room, and the nurses would get shifts to check on them in the middle of the night. The nurses were also highly skilled and had professional certifications under their belts.

The director was a chubby man in his fifties who looked like the matreya with his benevolent face, surnamed Duan. He welcomed the three men into his office with an affable smile. Once again, Kang Guanyu acted as the spokesperson and briefly described their purpose here.

When Director Duan heard that there was a criminal who visited the nursing home two months ago, his face blanched and he firmly stated that he would help as much as he could. The Administrator who was serving them drinks also had a pale face, unable to believe what she was hearing. For them, the nursing home had always been a peaceful and tranquil place. The sudden appearance of the criminal evidently scared them so much.

"Who is the nurse in charge of Mr. Qin again?" Director Duan asked the woman beside him.

"Oh, it’s Nurse Chen."

"Okay, tell Nurse Chen to bring him here."

"No need," Tak Jung-Hwa interjected with a smile. "We would also like to talk to all the nurses and residents who have interacted with Mr. Qin, so it’s not convenient to ask them to come here one by one."

"That’s right!" Kang Guanyu echoed in support, his expression was genuine and passionate. "How can we, strong and young men, ask the old people to come to us? It will make us ashamed! We will just come to them one by one if you don’t mind?"

Mu Yuze nodded in silent agreement.

"Err... you want to talk to all of them?" Director Duan hesitated for a second before nodding. He stood up. "Alright, please come with me."

Together, the five of them walked out of the office toward the lawn on the back with the Admin as the guide. "Mr. Qin has a fixed routine," she told them. "If he doesn’t mingle with his friends in the living room to watch TV, then he is having tea on the lawn." They passed through the kitchen and the administrator office, and then saw a large sliding door that led to the lawn.

The lawn was larger than expected. The ground was covered in trimmed soft grass, and there was a wooden gazebo where people could take cover from the sun. Currently, there were four people inside the gazebo, two elderly people and two nurses who accompanied them.

"Oh right, I forgot to tell you something," she added, a little hesitant. "Nurse Chen, he... he might look a little scary at first glance, but please don’t worry, he is a very diligent, kind-hearted and talented nurse!"

Before the three officers could ask what she meant by that, the Admin raised her hand to wave at the people in the gazebo. "Hey there! I’m very sorry for interrupting your leisure time, but we have a few visitors here. They have some questions to ask you about. Nurse Chen...?" She turned to tell the three officers. "That’s the one I am talking about."

A man, who looked in his late thirties, stood to his full height and gave them a polite bow.

Now they knew why the Admin would say that he looked scary. Aside from his sharp features and bushy eyebrows that made him look imposing, there was a long vertical scar that ran through his left eye to his cheek, making it seem like a huge caterpillar had grown there. He was the kind of guy who could make children cry just by glancing at them.

Unlike the Admin and Director Duan who clearly liked to smile, Nurse Chen’s temperament was a bit solemn and withdrawn. He made quite a bizarre image when dressed in the light pink nurse uniform with a few stuffed dolls in his arms.

As soon as Mu Yuze saw the scarred man, his steps faltered and his eyes widened almost imperceptibly. He was grateful that Kang Guanyu and Tak Jung-Hwa’s attention was fixated on Nurse Chen, otherwise they would be able to notice his unusual reaction. He was too overwhelmed by shock to think straight. His mind was dominated with only one question: why was this man here?

Mu Yuze knew him – or to be exact, he had seen this man a few times before, enough to carve his appearance to mind.

Seven years ago, Nurse Chen had been one of He Juan’s men.
