Chapter 193: Ready To Work

Thanks to the bartender’s statement, the police had a new suspicion — Qin Zhen might have been replaced earlier than their estimation.

Using this time frame as a guide, they interrogated the rest of the staff and asked them whether they had noticed anything unusual with Qin Zhen around five months ago. However, Qin Zhen was an introverted guy to begin with. Yes, he would gather in the staff lounge to gossip with another, but he was not social enough to hang out with them after work. That’s why the impression the staff had on Qin Zhen was only limited to a nice and hardworking guy who had a mild temper. That’s all.

The rest of the evening was spent just like that. Other than the clues they got from the bartender, they could not discover anything more from the other staff.

The big boss of Phoenix Ablaze, Han Shan, was not the kind of person who would mingle with the staff either, so all the more reason he had no idea that an imposter had snuck into his bar and secretly worked there for months. The only thing he could do was to hand over the surveillance footage, again, and let the police scour through it in case they would be able to find any particular characteristics about the imposter.

"I have to say..." an officer could not help but grumble under his breath as he watched the footage of the fake Qin Zhen’s daily working days. "This fucker really knows how to choose a person. A quiet, introverted guy with almost zero social relationship. And all he has is a father who sometimes forgets who he is. Even if he dies, nobody will come to seek justice for him."

Everyone fell quiet when they heard this. The more they thought about it, the more pitiful Qin Zhen was. In exchange, the rage and apprehension they felt toward the imposter almost reached the peak.

They had never met such a vicious and sneaky opponent before. This bastard was able to change their appearance, had top-notch acting skills and their IQ must be excellent as well. It was so frustrating how they finally realized the imposter’s presence only to not be able to discover anything about this person in the end.

Seeing that the atmosphere in the office reached an all time low, Li Zhi furrowed his brows.

Humans were not perfect and the more arrogant they were, the more they tended to make a mistake one day. Now that they were finally aware of their opponent who was hiding in the dark, Li Zhi would like to believe that the police would be able to catch this person sooner or later. It was not worth brooding over this matter. Just as he opened his mouth and intended to lecture his subordinates a little, someone suddenly exclaimed from the corner of the room.

An officer had just slammed down the handle of the phone when he let out a hysterical howl, "Captain!!"

"There’s no need to shout. Speak properly," Li Zhi said in displeasure. "What’s wrong?"

"Oh my God, oh my God!" The officer tugged on his hair in fluster. "I have just called the nursing home where Qin Zhen’s father is in, and guess what? The nurse said that Qin Zhen has visited. Two. Months. Ago! And he dumped a huge sum of money enough to cover the fee for five years!!"

There was a split second silence before the other officers stood up in shock. "What?!" As if droplets of water had been splashed into a pot of boiling oil, the atmosphere heated up in an instant. "Two months ago?! Qin Zhen already died at that time, right? Damn it! So that means, the person who went there... must be the imposter!"

"Fuck, what exactly is he doing?! Killing the son and nurturing the father?! Does he think it’s a charity?!"

"Hey, don’t try to guess the mind of a psychopath, okay?!"

Li Zhi was also taken aback. He did not expect that they would really be able to find something from the nursing home out of all places. What did the imposter go there for? Even if someone put a knife to his throat, he still would not believe that it was only to pay for the nursing home’s fee.

Though doubtful, he could only arrange people to investigate. "How much money are you talking about? Check Qin Zhen’s bank account and see if there has been a huge withdrawal for the past six months. Also—" he had just wanted to dispatch people to the nursing home when someone stepped into the office.

"Captain, I’m sorry for being late."

Mu Yuze instantly became the source of the attention, not because of his sudden appearance, but because of the thick bandages around his neck. Everyone knew that Mu Yuze was an omega, but they also knew how strong and capable he was. So when they saw that he was injured, especially at such a fragile and sensitive spot, they couldn’t help but be surprised.

"M–Mu Yuze!" Kang Guanyu exclaimed in shock. "Are you okay? What happened to your neck?!" He took the words out of everyone’s mouth.

"Nothing important," Mu Yuze was still being his cold and iceberg self as usual. After dismissing Kang Guanyu’s concern with those two words, he turned to Li Zhi and said, "Captain, I’m ready to work. Please assign me a task."

Li Zhi’s eyes zeroed in on his neck, his brows creasing deeply. "Are you sure you’re fine? I despise it when my subordinates overexert themselves. If you need a few more days off, I can sign it for you."

Mu Yuze shook his head. "No need." He did not explain where the wounds came from, making the other officers itchy with curiosity.

Seeing that he was being stubborn, Li Zhi did not try to persuade him anymore. "Okay, fine. We’re lacking manpower either way. I need you to go to the nursing home and investigate what’s happening there. Someone will brief you along the way..." Li Zhi’s gaze swept across the office and several people immediately raised their hands, wishing that they would be liberated from the task of watching surveillance footage. Kang Guanyu had already climbed into the chair and pointed at himself in desperation. Even Chen Lian was staring at him with eyes full of hope.

Li Zhi: "..."

"I will go with him," Tak Jung-Hwa raised to his feet and flashed a charismatic smile. "Not to brag, Captain Li, but old people tend to like me more. I’m sure I will be able to get more information from them."

Li Zhi nodded, "Okay, then I’d trouble you, Mr. Tak. Kang Guanyu, you go with them."

"Yesss!!" As soon as he was cued, Kang Guanyu pumped his fist into the air and walked proudly to the front of the office under his brothers’ boos. He straightened up and gave a salute toward Li Zhi, "Thank you, Captain! I won’t betray the trust you have given me!"

Li Zhi’s intention was simple. He chose Mu Yuze to go because of his superb observational and reasoning skills. However, he was severely lacking in the communication department so Tak Jung-hwa’s offer came at the perfect time. But then, he suddenly recalled that Mu Yuze and Tak Jung-Hwa had never worked together before. Fearing that Mu Yuze’s cold personality would make the two people’s cooperation stale, he ended up choosing Kang Guanyu as the mediator.

But now, he suddenly got a headache seeing Kang Guanyu’s jubilant demeanor. "Don’t mess around, okay?" He couldn’t help but warn the silly boy.

Kang Guanyu grinned and reassured him with a thump on his chest, "Don’t worry, Captain!"

Alas, Li Zhi was not reassured at all. He watched the three people exited the office one after another with the eyes of an old father and could only hope that they would do just fine.
