Gu Xiaobei’s heart twisted at the doctor’s words, her voice quivering with a sob, "What do you mean by a monster?"

With a sympathetic face, the doctor explained, "Look, your baby has three arms, three legs, but only one head. If that isn’t a monster, then what is it?"

Gu Xiaobei sat up, looking at the shadowy mass on the ultrasound screen, and sobbed uncontrollably.

Outside, Lu Zhanguo heard Xiaobei’s wailing and hurriedly ran in. He saw Xiaobei sitting on the bed, her pants not properly pulled up, gasping for breath through her tears, "What’s going on?"

Unable to speak, Xiaobei pointed at the ultrasound screen for Lu Zhanguo to see.

The doctor turned to Lu Zhanguo and explained, "The B-ultrasound shows that there is a problem with your baby. Extra arms and legs. I recommend that you don’t keep the baby. You’re young, you can always have another..."

At the doctor’s words, Gu Xiaobei’s sobbing intensified. Lu Zhanguo glared at the doctor, helped Xiaobei up, pulled up her pants. Xiaobei’s legs were so weak, she could hardly stand. Lu Zhanguo picked her up in his arms and carried her out of the examination room.

Curious onlookers outside peered through the door. Hearing the doctor’s words, they looked at the young couple with sympathy. It was a pity they were having a problematic child at such a young age.

Lu Zhanguo carried Gu Xiaobei to a stone bench in the hospital’s small garden. Fearing the cold, he took off the sweater he was wearing inside his uniform and spread it on the stone bench. After Dr. Jin left, Lu Zhanguo sat down and looked at Gu Xiaobei, whose eyes were red from crying, "Let Dr. Jin take another look later, maybe he didn’t see clearly."

Gu Xiaobei felt like she was clutching at straws, pinning all her hopes on the re-examination. Choking back a sob, she asked, "What if there’s still a problem?"

"No way, our child is obedient every day. How could there be any problems? Come on, let me help you up. Let’s take a walk." Lu Zhanguo forced back the turmoil in his heart and helped Gu Xiaobei to get up.

Gu Xiaobei got up, crying, "I can’t stand, my legs are weak."

Lu Zhanguo held onto Gu Xiaobei’s elbow, giving it is a firm grip, comforting her, "It’s okay, just move a few steps, everything will be fine, be strong."

After half an hour of walking, it felt like half a century had passed to Gu Xiaobei, she couldn’t stand it anymore, "Let’s go and take a look."

As she lay down on the examination table again, Gu Xiaobei felt her heart jump out of her chest. Dr. Jin invited Lu Zhanguo in as well and smilingly reassured Gu Xiaobei, "Relax, both of you are so healthy, the baby will be fine."

Dr. Jin carefully moved the ultrasound probe several times around Gu Xiaobei’s abdomen before he finally smiled, "There, the baby is just fine, these are the arms, these are the legs, look how strong they are kicking. Additionally, it’s a healthy little boy." Dr. Jin explained, pointing at the screen.

Gu Xiaobei’s red, tear-stained eyes widened in disbelief, "So, there’s really no problem? Why was it seen as three legs?"

Dr. Jin chuckled, "I guess the baby was playing with the umbilical cord, prompting the doctor to mistake it for extra arms and legs."

Gu Xiaobei heaved a sigh of relief, she felt as if her life had been cut short by half from the scare. She still wasn’t completely certain so she asked Lu Zhanguo, "Did you see clearly?"

Lu Zhanguo also breathed a sigh of relief, nodding with a smile, "Yes, I saw clearly. The baby is fine."

After thanking Dr. Jin, they left the examination room. Gu Xiaobei felt as if she were dreaming. She glanced resentfully at the examination room door, "I am never coming here again. It’s too frightening."

Once they reached the first floor, Gu Xiaobei came back to her senses. She stopped in her tracks and suddenly hugged Lu Zhanguo, "Did the doctor just say we’re having a son?" Her eyes, still red from crying, couldn’t hide the joy and expectation.

Lu Zhanguo’s lips curved upward. He glanced at her affectionately, "Yes, Dr. Jin said it’s a boy."

Unable to contain her excitement, Gu Xiaobei exclaimed, "Is this the silver lining after the scare?"

Qu Yan came over from the inpatient building. Upon entering the outpatient department, she noticed the couple and felt a pang of jealousy and envy seeing them, especially after learning that Gu Xiaobei was pregnant with a boy. Lu Zhanguo noticed Qu Yan approaching from his peripheral vision and promptly let go of Gu Xiaobei, helping her to stand properly.

It was then that Gu Xiaobei noticed Qu Yan, but she was in high spirits and couldn’t care less.

Walking over, Qu Yan, all smiles, asked, "Why are you two in the hospital?"

In response, Gu Xiaobei gave a broader smile. Although she had just cried, her swollen eyes did not in any way affect her buoyant mood, "We are here for a pregnancy check-up. How is Xinxin, is she any better?"

Qu Yan nodded, "A lot better. She should be able to leave the hospital the day after tomorrow."

"Well, you go on then, we have to head back." Gu Xiaobei quickly made an excuse to leave.

Looking at the backs of the two departing, Qu Yan thought of the way Lu Zhanguo just now was looking at Gu Xiaobei – a look filled with affection and indulgence. She felt a pang of jealousy, how she wished for such a precious look from him.

Once they got into the car, Lu Zhanguo asked Gu Xiaobei, "What do you feel like eating? Let’s buy something to take home."

"I wonder if there’s any fish. If not, let’s buy a chicken. I’m going to supplement our son, even though he gave his mom quite a scare." Gu Xiaobei thought about it, her heart still somewhat trembling.

Lu Zhanguo nodded, started the car, heading towards the grocery market. As they passed by the Xinhua Bookstore in town, still in business, Gu Xiaobei curiously asked, "This bookstore hasn’t gone out of business?"

"It’s now managed by the town government." Lu Zhanguo explained.

Gu Xiaobei simply gave an "Oh" in response, looking out of the car window. As they were nearing the farmers market, Gu Xiaobei casually glanced at the pedestrians and noticed a woman who seemed familiar. After pondering for a bit, she realized this wasn’t the woman she met on the train, Jia Xiu? Was this woman a resident of this town?

Wait a second, they had run into Jia Xiu and her mother-in-law on the train when they were in the provincial capital. The two women were already on the train, which meant they must have boarded at the previous station. So it couldn’t be that they were from T city. Why would they be in this small town?

Gu Xiaobei dismissed it as her eyes playing tricks on her, mistaking one person for another.

Once Lu Zhanguo parked the car and helped Xiaobei out, they went into the farmers market. They didn’t notice the resentful gaze that was following them closely from the shadows.
