After I Fully Prepared for the Apocalypse, the Ungrateful Cried with Regret
Chapter 219: A Mistake
"A person’s environment will reveal their true nature.
Even awakening a Superpower wouldn’t change his cold-blooded nature."
Nina Jacobs couldn’t agree more with what Sherry Renner said.
Because Wyatt Jacobs was, indeed, cold-blooded.
"But that guy, Liam Grant, is really unlucky..."
Sherry Renner said.
"Yeah, he’s incredibly unlucky."
Nina Jacobs said faintly.
’If he had died early on, how would he ever know the taste of betrayal? Wyatt Jacobs did it to him. And what would he think if he knew that Simon Abbott had been using him as a human shield all along?’
...
News of Myra Lawson awakening a Superpower spread quickly throughout the entire base.
As did the news about the "Mystic Ice Core."
"I can’t believe you can upgrade your Superpower after you get one. The Water Element Superpower Users are in for a treat."
"I heard it’s something they found in City J, but there are only a few. How could we possibly get our hands on one?"
"That’s not a given. I heard they’re holding a talent selection. Everyone in the base can participate, and the top few will get a chance."
"Forget it. Who could possibly compete with those guys from the rescue team?"
"If City J hadn’t turned into a zombie nest, we could have teamed up to go look for that treasure ourselves."
"Not me. I’d like to live a few more days..."
"..."
Discussions about the matter could be heard all over the base.
Many Superpower Users also began sparring with each other, hoping to fight for a chance to obtain a Mystic Ice Core.
"Really? For us?"
Holden Shaw stared at the black stone in front of him.
He knew this was the legendary "Mystic Ice Core" everyone was talking about.
And Nina Jacobs was actually planning to let him and Chase Gallagher each absorb one of these rare Mystic Ice Cores.
"You’re going to City A on my behalf this time.
The journey is fraught with danger, and I hope you have enough power to protect yourselves."
Nina Jacobs said.
She had chosen the two of them to escort Sheila Rhodes to City A because they were both Speed Element Superpower Users. If they encountered any danger, they could use their Superpowers to escape immediately.
"Remember, no matter what happens, the most important thing is to stay alive. I’ll be waiting for you back at the base."
Nina Jacobs told the two of them before they left.
Although she had also considered going to City A, Vera Coleman had just given birth to her two baby girls.
Besides, she still had a few unresolved matters at the base.
"Don’t worry! You know what we’re capable of, right?"
Holden Shaw could hear the concern in Nina Jacobs’s voice, and a wave of emotion washed over him.
No one had cared about him this much since the apocalypse began.
"I know the situation in City A.
After we drop her off, we’ll head back immediately."
Chase Gallagher added.
Seeing the two of them begin to focus on absorbing the Mystic Ice Cores, Nina Jacobs felt relieved. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
"Nina Jacobs, thank you for everything during this time. Here’s your book back."
Sheila Rhodes handed the book of poetry to Nina Jacobs, then reluctantly stroked Treasure, who was standing beside her.
"Stay safe on the road. I hope you’ll be reunited soon."
Nina Jacobs accepted the book.
"Yes, you need to be careful too from now on."
Tears seemed to well up in Sheila Rhodes’s eyes, but she still managed a smile as she spoke.
The place where Samson Thorne was to board his plane was not inside the base.
Nina Jacobs walked the group to the base gate, then gave Chase and Holden a few more reminders.
The rescue team would escort them for the rest of the way.
With them finally on their way,
Nina Jacobs went to the base hospital. She had planned to see the twins but ran into Pascal Paige instead.
"Looks like you’ve gotten quite used to working at the hospital."
Nina Jacobs noticed that Pascal Paige was getting along very well with the other Healers.
"It’s not bad. I should at least practice here until I can advance to an Intermediate Superpower User, right?"
Having witnessed how powerful Nina Jacobs became after her advancement, Pascal Paige was also eager to advance.
"Oh, by the way, speaking of Sheila Rhodes, guess who else I treated today?"
"Who?"
"That girl who bullied Sheila—Zoe Morgan!"
Pascal Paige loved to gossip with others.
"You know what? She’s in a miserable state now. She used to be the one bullying others, but now others are bullying her.
I heard that because she can’t find her official daddy, those two little lackeys who used to follow her around won’t even give her the time of day."
"But it seems she still holds a grudge against Sheila Rhodes. She said that if they hadn’t saved her from the pedestrian street, she wouldn’t have survived for long."
"What did you say?"
Nina Jacobs frowned.
Pascal Paige paused, slightly stunned. "I’m talking about Zoe Morgan."
"The last sentence." Nina Jacobs wasn’t sure if she had misheard.
"Zoe Morgan said that if they hadn’t saved Sheila Rhodes from the pedestrian street, she wouldn’t have survived."
Pascal Paige repeated.
"But isn’t Sheila Rhodes a student at J High School?
What would she be doing on a pedestrian street?"
Nina Jacobs asked. Sheila Rhodes had indeed told her personally that she was Zoe Morgan’s classmate.
Pascal Paige was also stumped by the sudden question.
"I guess so... Could it be that I misheard?"
Pascal Paige wasn’t sure anymore either.
"Did Zoe Morgan say where she’s living now?"
Nina Jacobs asked.
Pascal Paige shook her head. She was about to say something more, but she saw Nina Jacobs running toward the hospital exit.
In the lobby of the administration building.
Adrian Shaw was just about to head out when he saw Nina Jacobs rush in, looking panicked.
"What are you looking for?"
Seeing Adrian Shaw appear from the side, Nina Jacobs immediately grabbed him.
"Help me look up someone’s residence. It’s urgent."
Nina Jacobs remembered Ian Chandler telling her that the base had already compiled everyone’s Superpower information and residence details.
"Alright. You didn’t run into another scumbag, did you?"
Adrian Shaw had never seen Nina Jacobs look so anxious.
"I don’t have time for jokes. This is a matter of life and death."
Nina Jacobs said.
"Zoe Morgan, she lives in Dormitory Building 8, Room 605..."
Adrian Shaw didn’t dare delay any longer.
But by the time he finished, there was no longer any trace of Nina Jacobs behind him.
...
Zoe Morgan hadn’t expected to see Nina Jacobs again.
"What are you doing here?"
Zoe Morgan indeed looked a bit of a mess at that moment.
When Nina Jacobs found her, she was leaning on a wooden stick for a crutch.
"I want to ask you something."
"If you want information, you pay first."
Zoe Morgan held out her hand.
Without hesitation, Nina Jacobs took out a small bag of Crystal Cores and placed it in her hand.
Zoe Morgan’s face lit up. "Go on, what do you want to ask me?"
"Are you a student from J High School?"
Nina Jacobs asked.
"Yeah, I already told you that. What’s there to ask about?"
Zoe Morgan rolled her eyes.
"Then what about Sheila Rhodes? Were you classmates? Or just went to the same school?"
Nina Jacobs immediately asked again.
"Her? She’s not from our J High School.
We met her outside after we escaped from the school.
Let me tell you, don’t be fooled by her quiet and gentle appearance. Who knows what she’s really plotting inside."
"Why? What are you asking this for?"
Zoe Morgan looked at Nina Jacobs.
"Then was she a student at another school?"
Nina Jacobs asked, clinging to a last shred of hope.
"That I don’t know. She did like to read a language arts textbook,
but she said it was her younger sister’s, who was a high school senior.
Maybe she was in college?"
Zoe Morgan said.
’Reading? College?’
Remembering the book of poetry Sheila Rhodes had returned to her before leaving, she immediately rushed back to her quarters.
The book of poetry was still on the corner of the living room table.
Nina Jacobs opened the book. Tucked inside was a note. On the note were four words: Don’t save Sheila Rhodes.
Staring at the contents of the note, Nina Jacobs suddenly grew tense.
She felt like she had made a very serious mistake.
"What’s wrong? It’s almost time for dinner."
Seeing Nina Jacobs about to head out, Leo Hale couldn’t help but ask.
"Holden Shaw and the others are in danger. I have to go out."
With no time to explain further, Nina Jacobs dashed straight out the door.
