After I Fully Prepared for the Apocalypse, the Ungrateful Cried with Regret
Chapter 218: Mysterious Infection
"I never thought you’d figure it out."
After Wyatt Jacobs was taken away, Sherry Renner told Nina Jacobs right away.
She had been quite confused when Nina first brought up Wyatt.
But unexpectedly, after hearing what Nina had to say, York was the first to agree with her.
"It was just a coincidence," Nina Jacobs said.
In truth, she’d had her suspicions ever since reading the investigation report.
After all, something that hadn’t happened in her past life was now leaving a trail of clues in this one.
She just couldn’t figure out why the victims would willingly go to such secluded places.
Not until someone handed her a flyer that morning.
"So that’s how it was. But why did you zero in on him?" Sherry Renner asked.
Hundreds of teams were recruiting Superpower Users every day; the scene was practically booming.
"Because only a few teams were willing to take on inexperienced Superpower Users."
Nina hadn’t actually expected Wyatt Jacobs to be that psychologically twisted.
What Claire Warner experienced two days ago with those people helped her understand his motives.
In this life, Wyatt Jacobs hadn’t awakened a Superpower.
This had been a huge blow to him.
It had even become an obsession.
Recruiting inexperienced Superpower Users was just his way of getting revenge.
Or maybe, he derived some sense of accomplishment from it.
As for why he only chose women, it was because he was convinced that women were weak.
Or that they were easier targets.
"Basically, he’s just completely unhinged," Sherry Renner said angrily, "and he was spouting some nonsense about conservation of energy."
"He mentioned conservation of energy?" Nina asked immediately.
"Yeah, why?"
Sherry Renner thought Nina’s expression had turned a little strange.
"It’s nothing. I just think his idea is absurd."
Nina did her best to suppress her inner doubts.
’Conservation of energy.’ Someone had indeed mentioned that in her past life.
’He believed Superpowers were a form of energy, and that energy ebbed and flowed. The more Mutated Zombies were killed, the stronger human Superpower Users would become.’
’There was nothing wrong with that theory. But how did Wyatt Jacobs know about it?’
Nina remembered that Wyatt and this person had never met.
’And it was this same person who told me about the "Universal Element," though he’d only heard about it himself.’
"Do you have any more of those talismans that make people tell the truth?" Nina asked.
"They’re called ’Candor Talismans,’ and of course I do, hehehe."
Sherry Renner pulled out two talismans and placed them in front of Nina.
"After you’re done interrogating Wyatt, I want to ask him a few things alone."
Nina accepted the Talisman Paper.
Even though there were no laws in the apocalypse, the base had already established its own set of regulations.
Wyatt had committed a capital offense and was being held at the Enforcement Bureau.
She planned to use the Talisman Paper to question him before his execution.
"Of course! Ask him whatever you want,"
"I’ll pull some strings for you when the time comes."
Sherry was in high spirits.
With the menace caught, she and her colleagues could finally get some rest.
Just then, however, Treasure began to cry out restlessly in the yard again.
Remembering what had happened last time, the two of them went out to the yard together.
"Has Treasure found something again?" Sherry asked.
"I don’t know. Let’s have it lead the way."
Nina called for Wayne Warner.
Just like last time, once outside, Treasure took off in one direction without looking back.
It didn’t stop until it reached the gate of a courtyard.
There, it began to cry out loudly at the house within.
Sherry peered into the yard but couldn’t see anything.
She tried knocking, but no one answered the door.
But Treasure kept making noise, a clear sign it had found something.
"I’ll have a colleague check who lives here."
Sherry pulled out her communicator.
It was a special communicator used within the base.
Currently, only key personnel from the various departments were issued one.
"No need."
Nina said, looking at the house number with certainty.
"This is where Wyatt Jacobs lives."
"It’s also Liam Grant’s group’s address."
"Wyatt Jacobs?"
Sherry was surprised for a moment before composing herself. "Well, that makes things easier."
They were already planning to search Wyatt’s residence for evidence.
Sherry quickly called for the security team.
But just as they entered the yard and were about to open the door, Nina stopped them.
"Right now, Treasure is most sensitive to the zombie virus,"
"Be careful going in."
she told the members of the security team.
Zombies weren’t terrifying, but rushing in unprepared made it easy to get scratched or bitten.
"Understood."
The security team leader raised the steel-pronged spear in his hands.
A Gold Element user then used their Superpower to pick the lock.
GROWL! GROWL!
Sure enough, two zombies were waiting right behind the door.
The moment it opened, they lunged forward.
They appeared to be an elderly couple.
And since they were newly turned, the security team dispatched them easily.
"Is that them?"
Sherry was shocked.
She had seen this old couple before.
They were Liam Grant’s unreasonable parents.
They had even cursed Nina out back in the shelter.
The members of the security team all breathed a sigh of relief.
However, Treasure didn’t stop making noise.
Everyone’s nerves were on edge once more.
Nina stepped inside and saw splattered gore everywhere, with chunks of flesh littering the floor.
"In there."
Nina had already heard a noise coming from one of the rooms.
The door was kicked open, and several molting zombie chickens with lolling heads lunged at them!
BANG! BANG! BANG!
A few Fireballs instantly set the pouncing zombie chickens ablaze in mid-air.
Only then did Treasure fall silent.
"Thank you, Ms. Jacobs."
Silas and the other members of the security team broke out in a cold sweat.
If Nina hadn’t reacted so quickly, they would have been bitten by those zombie chickens.
"It’s fine. Just be careful next time," Nina said.
She had just triggered another system reward, receiving three bottles of "Healing Potion."
’It must be for saving Silas and his team.’
"Why are there zombie chickens here?"
Sherry wondered, looking at the charred zombie chickens.
But when they saw the chicken coop in the room, along with various feeders and tools, they immediately understood.
"Looks like the old couple was secretly raising chickens in here,"
"but the chickens got infected and turned."
Silas shook his head.
The poor old couple must have been bitten by these zombie chickens.
"You might want to ask Wyatt Jacobs about this," Nina suggested.
After all, the zombie virus wouldn’t just appear in the base for no reason.
That very day, Wyatt Jacobs confessed to his crimes.
"That old couple always looked down on him, but since Liam Grant is the team captain, he put up with it. He planned on waiting for Liam and his group to be away, then pinning the blame on the zombie chickens,"
"He just didn’t expect to get caught first."
Sherry said with a sigh when she returned that evening.
He had also been the one to feed the chickens food laced with the zombie virus.
"Yeah... I never thought he was that kind of person."
Nina thought back to the Wyatt Jacobs of her past life.
’Before he awakened his Superpower, he had always been so careful with his words and actions.’
’He had made a habit of fawning over her and Liam Grant.’
’Their team originally had another Thunder Element Superpower User named Orion Phelps, but he and Wyatt got separated from the group during an escape.’
’Only Wyatt came back.’
’Wyatt just said he died, but never explained how.’
’Nina remembered hearing Orion Phelps call Wyatt a madman the night before it happened.’
’And then there was Aidan Keaton, who never got along with Wyatt. Not long after that, he mysteriously contracted the zombie virus...’
’All the signs were there, but none of them had noticed.’
