When the Side Character Gets a System and Travels through Difference Worlds
Chapter 313: Tang Li 41
Director Liu sighed. "This is already more than good enough. You’ve only put out one movie script, but with just that single one, you’ve already taken home the top prize. You’ve been a top-tier screenwriter in the industry for a while now."
"If you were a master of everything else too, would you even let anyone else make a living?"
Tan You thought about it and agreed. "You’re right. I guess I’m doing alright, huh?"
"Alright? It’s more than alright! It’s fantastic," Old Zhou laid on the flattery. "Director Tang, you’re just too modest. Look at those people who win minor awards—they all walk around with their noses in the air. Who among them is like you? So low-key all the time? Not flashy at all."
"Let’s forget about being flashy. I still think it’s better to be a little modest." Tan You politely declined the praise. "By the way, can Ye Qian sing? Can she read sheet music?"
Sister Hu’s radar immediately went up. "Yes, she can! She even released an album before. Her singing skills are solid."
Tan You’s chopsticks paused. "I’ve written a few sets of lyrics and had one of the company’s composers help set them to music. I think they’d be a great fit for Director Liu’s movie."
Director Liu said, "Great! You handled the last movie’s insert song and theme song too. Why don’t you sing them yourself?"
Brother Chen let out a laugh, but out of consideration for Tan You’s feelings, he didn’t dare say a word and could only laugh to himself.
Tan You, however, didn’t mind. "I’m completely tone-deaf. Teacher Liang had to put in a ton of effort just to help me compose the music."
Thinking of the process of getting in sync with Teacher Liang, Tan You couldn’t help but give a wry smile. Whether it was her or Tang Li, both were tone-deaf. In fact, Tan You felt that Tang Li was even worse than she was.
At least when she sang, she was still on key. But Tang Li... she was seriously off-key. When they had worked with Teacher Liang, he had been so exasperated. Tan You didn’t even want to think about it.
Teacher Liang was also at the table. He raised his glass to Tan You. "It’s nothing. The Director’s talent overshadows everything else. These are just minor flaws."
Tan You teased, "Then shall we continue tomorrow? I’ve been feeling quite inspired to write lyrics lately."
Teacher Liang immediately surrendered. "Let me catch my breath. Let me catch my breath."
Everyone burst out laughing, but at the same time, they were all incredibly curious. Just how bad was Tan You’s tone-deafness?
Tan You could tell what they were all thinking with a single glance. She thought for a moment and said, "It’s too tragic to witness. I won’t embarrass myself. Some flaws are best left known only to a professional like Teacher Liang."
Teacher Liang joked, "That’s right. At least the Director looks completely serious when she sings, unlike other people whose faces contort when they go off-key."
Tan You smiled. "Ye Qian’s vocal tone is quite nice. Very sweet. If she could both sing and dance, she would set a new standard for the ’sweet’ image."
Sister Hu quickly chimed in, "Ye Qian has studied dance before, too."
Tan You had more or less finished eating by now. She put down her chopsticks. "Oh?"
Ye Qian nodded. "Yes. My parents doted on me, so they sent me to learn dance and music when I was younger. But later, for the art school entrance exams, I chose to study acting. Of course, I also love to sing, and I’ve always kept up with my dance fundamentals."
Tan You knew Ye Qian was fighting for an opportunity. She didn’t think Ye Qian was being opportunistic; ’you have to fight for your own chances, after all.’
"After Director Liu’s movie is done filming, come back to the company. I’ll put together an album for you." Tan You smiled. "Ye Qian’s face is truly suited for this sweet image. Just looking at her makes you want to smile."
"Now I’m the one who feels like smiling even in my dreams," Ye Qian said frankly. "Before, I had so little work. Sometimes I wouldn’t get a single job in a whole month. Now, even though I’m busy, I wish I could be on the go every single day."
"I guess I’m just terrified of being poor again." Ye Qian laughed self-deprecatingly.
Director Liu and the others were lost in their own thoughts as well, recalling past hardships, and the room fell silent for a moment.
Chairman Wang coughed. "Li Zi, I remember you can dance too. That said, there are plenty of ’sweet style’ dances on the market. How do you plan to innovate?"
Tan You glanced at him, knowing he was trying to liven up the atmosphere. She wasn’t one to back down from a challenge. "Alright. Teacher Liang, shall we show them a little something?"
Teacher Liang laughed. "Sure. I never thought I’d see the day I’d be singing a cute, sweet song."
As he spoke, he turned on the music. Soon, a cheerful and lively tune filled the room. When the lyrics began, Teacher Liang’s pleasant baritone voice rang out, and Tan You matched it by performing a cheerful, sweet dance.
This kind of cute, sweet song was undoubtedly very catchy. Towards the end, Teacher Liang even started dancing with Tan You—it was quite a picture. Everyone had put down their chopsticks by now, leaning back in their chairs with their arms crossed to watch.
Ye Qian stared at Tan You’s dancing, unwilling to even blink. Having studied dance herself, she knew that while Tan You’s dance didn’t look difficult, it was incredibly hard to achieve that kind of playful energy.
After finishing the dance together, Teacher Liang seemed to want more. "I’ve got to say, this dance is pretty infectious. Don’t be fooled by how expressionless Li Zi usually is; she’s absolutely radiant when she dances."
"This is the first time I’ve ever seen Li Zi smile so sweetly," Old Zhou also laughed. "When I delivered her award trophy, she didn’t even smile like this."
Tan You’s expression had already returned to its usual placid state. "It was just for the dance. Can you do it?"
She directed this question at Ye Qian. Ye Qian nodded vigorously. "Can I try?"
"Alright, then give it a try." Tan You also wanted to see Ye Qian’s skill level. ’While I certainly want to give Ye Qian a boost, it also depends on her own abilities.’
Teacher Liang was eager to go. "Should I sing again?"
Ye Qian said, "Yes, please. Thank you, Teacher Liang."
Just as Tan You had said, Ye Qian was a perfect fit for the sweet style. As she danced, smiles appeared on the faces of everyone in the room. Sister Hu took the opportunity to turn her head and secretly wipe away the tears welling in the corners of her eyes. She had never expected Ye Qian to have so much potential.
Tan You watched this scene silently. ’Come to think of it, I know a lot of other great songs. Should I collaborate with Teacher Liang again? The man is a rare talent; how can I let him go now that I’ve found him?’
After Ye Qian finished the dance, Tan You didn’t hold back her praise. "Very good. That sweet vibe is a total knockout. No one can escape that kind of charm."
Ye Qian touched her face, a little embarrassed. "I didn’t know I had this side to me, either. Sister Li Zi really has a good eye for people."
Director Liu said, "Of course she has a good eye. Li Zi, I had no idea you were hiding all this. Once Little Ye’s album comes out, it’ll be one of a kind in the industry. I’ve never seen anyone as sweet as her."
Tan You spread her hands. "I’ve just been using her as a prototype for my recent work, so these ideas came to me naturally. But seriously, you still need to practice your dancing. Some of your transitions are a bit stiff."
Ye Qian immediately declared her resolve. "I’ll definitely practice hard!"
Tan You smiled. "Then it’s settled. We’ll discuss the album after you’re done filming Director Liu’s movie. Teacher Liang, shall we mull it over later?"
