Chapter 182 - 181: Return to Hometown
Invisibility and stealth were already a familiar tactic for them. Even if they couldn’t see each other, they could sense each other’s position through the Heart Method. Liu Shuyue led the way forward, while Chen Xuan stayed behind to keep a lookout. They quickly reached the source of the cries for help.
The sight that greeted them was of a girl with short, light chestnut hair, engaged in a life-or-death struggle with an insect. The creature resembled a centipede but was at least a hundred times larger, almost as long as a person!
Moreover, its head bore a pair of pincer-like mouthparts, which, compared to the girl’s slender neck, were no different from a guillotine. Clearly aware of this, she desperately held the insect’s mandibles with both hands to prevent it from biting her.
Chen Xuan used Celestial Mist Skill to scan the surrounding area but found no other light sources.
Seeing the girl’s resistance fading, Liu Shuyue sprang into action. She summoned the Thousand Thoughts Sword and, in the blink of an eye, severed the insect’s body.
Its belly gushed out a torrent of green liquid onto the ground.
The girl managed to free herself from the insect’s grip, scrambling back several meters with a face full of lingering fear.
Liu Shuyue lifted her invisibility and approached, asking, "Who are you?"
Unexpectedly, the moment she saw Liu Shuyue, the girl’s frazzled nerves unraveled, and she threw herself at Liu Shuyue, burying her face and crying loudly, leaving Liu Shuyue at a loss.
Several minutes later, the girl regained her composure.
"I’m sorry... I didn’t mean to. I was just... really scared of bugs." She apologized repeatedly.
Chen Xuan could understand her reasoning.
Most insects, when magnified a hundred times on camera, look like indescribable alien species, let alone having a creature this large crawling all over you—it would certainly be a sanity-reducing experience.
Carefully examining her, Chen Xuan noted that the girl was clearly not from Jiang City. Her chestnut hair was natural, her blue eyes didn’t appear to be contact lenses, and she likely hailed from abroad. Her modern attire contrasted sharply with this gloomy, silent world.
Given their coincidental presence in the same area, Chen Xuan began to suspect she might be a Mechanical Officer.
"I’m Elorie, thank you both for rescuing me," the girl thanked sincerely, wiping the corners of her eyes.
As soon as she introduced herself, Chen Xuan was certain she was a new member of the agency, belonging to the same group as Jiang Siqi.
What should he do next?
Kill her to keep their secret? Chen Xuan awkwardly rubbed his head; Liu Shuyue probably wouldn’t agree.
She didn’t know much about the Dimensional Limit Mechanism and might not understand the complications of having a Mechanical Officer witness their true nature.
During the fierce battle with the demon, Chen Xuan had lost both his hat and mask, and it’s too late now to replace them.
Even so, Chen Xuan decided to be forthright, "You’re with the Dimensional Limit Mechanism?"
Elorie froze for a moment, then seemed to suddenly understand, "It was you who defeated the demon!?" She looked at Liu Shuyue in surprise, "You’re the other Wanderer... the White-clothed Immortal?"
Liu Shuyue tilted her head, indicating she didn’t recognize the person.
Chen Xuan admitted directly, "That’s right."
There was no way to hide their identities seamlessly here; as the concerned party, she could likely deduce who they were with just a bit of thought.
Elorie’s first reaction wasn’t fear but gratitude, clutching Liu Shuyue’s hands and saying, "You saved me, and so many others! This demon was far stronger than I anticipated; if it escaped, the number of innocents dying at its hands in the future would be unfathomable!"
"You’re welcome..." Liu Shuyue responded passively.
Then the girl slapped her forehead, repeatedly signaling to Chen Xuan, "I’m not your enemy and don’t want to get involved in the grudges between you and the Dimensional Limit Mechanism. I joined the agency to hunt demons. Now that the demon is dead, my mission is complete."
"Oh?" Chen Xuan raised an eyebrow, "You don’t plan to stay with the agency?"
"Well... I accidentally entered this world while tracking the demon. If I can find a way back, I’d definitely choose to return."
"So you’re a Wanderer, then?"
"No... my tracking abilities specifically target demons, allowing me to follow their aura to the ends of the earth," she explained hastily, "Entering another unfamiliar world was a first."
That’s interesting, Chen Xuan mused.
Indeed, the term Wanderer was merely used by the Dimensional Limit Mechanism and wasn’t universally acknowledged across all worlds. In some other worlds, they might have different titles, such as demon.
In fact, in a way, demons were freer than Wanderers.
Because while Wanderers travel through invasion points, this Gustav guy tore open a space rift to try escaping, essentially creating an invasion point.
"But we were unlucky to be sucked into the rift, tossed into an unknown world."
Chen Xuan stood up, gazing around — aside from the abandoned buildings, he found nothing connected to the "Black Light Rift," meaning their hope of returning to Jiang City was currently not feasible.
Perhaps they were within the rift’s uncontrolled range, causing the invasion point that should have worked normally to become an erratic random teleportation.
"We’re planning to look for a way out in that area with buildings in front..."
"Can I come with you?"
Before Chen Xuan could finish, Elorie earnestly pleaded, "I don’t want to be hugged by those bugs again."
...
The three left the vine-covered park, walking along the street toward what seemed to be the city.
With no maintenance for a long time, the asphalt roads meant for vehicle traffic were full of cracks, grass growing through them, covering half the road. The surrounding houses were also severely damaged, almost reduced to empty shells.
Chen Xuan also searched inside an empty house, discovering TVs and electric lights everywhere, but they were all aging.
Could this place be another world on the brink of destruction?
Compared to the rusty city of steel, at least there wasn’t radiation dust everywhere here. If it weren’t for the constant gloomy weather, walking through these greenery-covered concrete ruins would feel quite romantically apocalyptic.
"Eek! Spider!"
Suddenly, Elorie exclaimed.
Following her gaze, Chen Xuan spotted the spider... It was perched on the side of a two-story building, its dark green body blending with the shadow of the trees, almost as big as a small car. It wasn’t just Elorie; he also got goosebumps when he saw it.
"That’s so goddamn huge..."
If it weren’t for the buildings everywhere, he’d be afraid he was back in the Jurassic Era.
Is the defining feature of this world size?
With insects and spiders this large, what would other animals look like?
Or... were they simply nonexistent?
Realizing this gave Chen Xuan a fright.
Up until now, he hadn’t seen a single wildcat or bird. Logically, once humans migrate away, these animals should quickly become the city’s rulers.
Gradually, more buildings appeared around them. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
Seeing several collapsed billboards, Chen Xuan noted that the writing wasn’t any familiar Chinese.
If the world’s language and writing were foreign, even if they found locals here, it wouldn’t be much help.
Even worse, a lack of communication could lead to more misunderstandings and suspicion, presenting the most challenging scenario.
"Magasin de beauté Odyssey..." Elorie murmured unexpectedly.
"Wait, you can read what’s written?" Chen Xuan asked.
"Yes, it’s French," the girl replied absent-mindedly.
Alright... So the demon instinctively chose its familiar escape destination? It made sense. Thinking of finally being in Europe, and that he could fly back to Jiang City, he felt assured.
No, wait! Chen Xuan’s heart skipped a beat; where in Europe would you find giant spiders and centipedes?
"Can you deduce where we are?" he asked, not really expecting an answer. French was everywhere in Europe, even in France, with its over thirty cities, identifying a specific location based on a few buildings was unrealistic.
Yet Elorie’s response left him stunned.
"I’m not sure, but it looks familiar... almost as if we’re on the Champs-Élysées."
