Chapter 55: Chapter 55: Where is Zane?

Zane stepped into the boss chamber with a grin already forming on his face.

The gate sealed shut behind him slowly, heavy stone grinding together while cold air poured through the massive open arena ahead. The chamber itself looked endless, pillars stretching high into darkness while broken ruins circled the battlefield like remains of an older civilization.

And coiled around those ruins—

The boss waited.

A winged snake.

No—

Something worse.

Its body stretched across the chamber in massive loops, scales dark green with faint metallic reflections running beneath them like veins of sharpened steel. Each movement produced a scraping sound against the stone floor, thousands of scales shifting together in a way that made the entire creature seem armored.

Huge wings rested folded along its sides.

Not feathered.

Membranous.

Thin enough to look fragile until they moved and displaced enough air to shake debris across the chamber. Jagged bones protruded through the wing structure like spears, giving the creature a silhouette closer to a living weapon than an animal.

Its head lifted slowly.

Long.

Narrow.

Predatory.

Two glowing yellow eyes locked onto Zane immediately, unblinking and intelligent. Its jaw opened slightly, revealing rows of hooked teeth curving backward deep into its throat.

The thing was enormous.

And fast.

Zane stared at it for half a second before smiling wider.

"I can’t wait to kill this dungeon boss."

Mana flared lightly around his hands.

"So that way..."

The snake hissed loudly enough to shake the chamber.

"...I can claim even more OP skills."

The boss attacked first.

Its wings exploded outward violently as it lunged.

Fast.

Way too fast for its size.

Zane reacted instantly.

"Mana Pulse."

The compressed blast erupted from his palm and slammed directly into the serpent’s head—

And dispersed.

Nothing.

The scales absorbed most of the force while the rest rolled harmlessly off its body like water against reinforced steel.

"...Tough bastard."

The snake crashed into him immediately afterward.

Zane twisted away barely in time as the creature tore through a pillar behind him instead, stone exploding everywhere from the impact.

He retaliated instantly.

His extension blade unfolded from his arm with a metallic snap before he slashed downward toward the serpent’s exposed neck.

CLANG.

The strike bounced.

The scales held.

Zane’s eyes narrowed slightly as the impact numbed his arm.

Even the extension wasn’t enough.

The snake lunged again.

Zane slid underneath it this time, blade scraping sparks against the creature’s underside while he searched for softer points.

Nothing.

Its durability was ridiculous.

The serpent coiled around a ruined structure before launching itself downward again, massive jaws snapping shut where Zane had stood half a second earlier.

Zane landed nearby and exhaled slowly.

"...Yeah."

His grin faded slightly.

"I was trying not to use this."

Because his skill—

Consumed too much mana.

Far too much.

Normally he avoided relying on it unless absolutely necessary. Every activation drained him heavily depending on what he affected.

But against this thing—

He didn’t have a choice.

The snake charged again.

Zane stepped forward instead of back.

"Skill activation."

Mana surged violently through his body.

"Manlion."

The effect triggered instantly.

The moment Zane’s hand touched the serpent’s scales—

CRACK.

A section of its body shrank violently inward.

Not compressed.

Reduced.

A large portion of the snake’s armored scales suddenly became a fraction of their original size, collapsing structure and density instantly. The affected area crumbled apart under its own imbalance, scales breaking into fragments as the serpent recoiled violently.

The boss screamed.

Zane smiled again.

"There it is."

He moved immediately.

Touch.

Another section reduced.

The serpent’s wing joint shrank unnaturally, the supporting structure collapsing instantly before the wing tore itself apart under its own momentum.

The creature crashed sideways through a ruined pillar.

Zane stayed on it relentlessly now.

Every touch systematically dismantled the serpent piece by piece. Scales shrank and shattered apart. Entire sections of muscle collapsed inward unnaturally before bursting under pressure.

The snake thrashed violently trying to stop him, but Zane stayed near its upper body intentionally, breaking down critical sections methodically.

Neck.

Wing joints.

Jaw structure.

Every successful touch visibly destabilized the monster further.

It worked.

The serpent’s movements became sloppier as larger portions of its body lost proper structure.

Then—

Zane made a mistake.

He focused too much on the head.

Didn’t account for the tail.

The serpent’s massive tail whipped across the chamber suddenly from his blind spot.

Too fast.

Zane turned just in time to see it—

Then impact.

BOOM.

The strike slammed into him hard enough to launch him completely across the chamber. He tore through multiple stone structures before crashing violently against the far wall, cracks exploding outward from the collision.

Dust rained down around him.

Zane coughed once, blood running down the corner of his mouth as he forced himself upright slowly.

Across the chamber—

The winged serpent reared back up.

Damaged.

Broken in places.

But still very much alive.

Zane pushed himself off the broken wall slowly, one hand pressed against his ribs while debris slid from his shoulders.

"...Right."

Across the chamber, the winged serpent dragged itself upright again, damaged sections of its body still unstable from Manlion. Shrunk scales cracked apart every time it moved, broken wing joints hanging unevenly at its sides.

But despite all that—

It was still fast.

Zane watched the way it shifted its weight.

The way its entire body motion started from the tail.

That was it.

The mobility.

The acceleration.

Everything chained from there.

"So I cut the tail off."

The serpent hissed violently and launched forward again.

Zane inhaled slowly.

Then activated another skill.

One he’d copied weeks ago from a B-rank frost dungeon boss.

"Ice Technique."

Cold mana spread instantly across the chamber floor.

"All Frost."

The temperature dropped violently.

Unlike ordinary ice abilities that created projectiles or constructs, All Frost was an area conversion technique. Anything touched by its mana rapidly lost heat, structure, and movement simultaneously. Moisture crystallized instantly while surfaces became brittle enough to fracture under minimal force.

The frost didn’t spread explosively.

It crept.

Fast enough to matter.

The serpent lunged through the freezing field toward him anyway, jaws open wide.

Zane stepped forward instead of back.

And touched the tail.

The technique activated fully.

CRRRRK.

Frost erupted across the serpent’s tail instantly, layers of ice racing upward along the scales faster than the monster could react. The structure froze solid mid-motion, every segment locked in place as brittle frost crystals formed between the joints.

Then—

The tail broke apart.

The serpent’s own momentum shattered the frozen section completely, chunks of ice-covered flesh exploding outward across the chamber as the entire rear portion of its body tore free.

The monster screamed.

And suddenly—

It lost balance.

Zane’s eyes sharpened.

"Now’s my chance."

He rushed in immediately.

Fast.

Extension blade forming along his arm again as he closed the distance toward the serpent’s exposed neck.

The snake reacted desperately.

Its jaw opened unnaturally wide—

Then snapped shut.

Zane’s eyes widened.

Too late.

The world flipped violently as the serpent swallowed him whole.

"...Seriously?"

The serpent’s insides contracted violently around him, trying to crush him before digestion even began.

Zane answered instantly.

"Mana Pulse!"

BOOM.

The blast erupted outward inside the serpent’s body violently, illuminating the interior in flashes of blue-white mana. Flesh ruptured around him as the pulse detonated internally.

The snake convulsed hard.

But—

It didn’t spit him out.

Zane frowned.

Another pulse.

Then another.

Explosions ripped through the inside of the serpent repeatedly, shaking the entire chamber outside as mana blasts detonated through its organs and inner structure.

Still—

The serpent kept him trapped.

The muscles tightened harder instead, compressing around him while acidic fluids poured from the walls in increasing amounts.

"...You stubborn bastard."

Outside, the winged serpent slammed itself violently against the chamber floor, roaring in pain while smoke and mana leaked visibly from cracks forming along its scales.

But it refused to release him. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎

And inside the monster—

Zane realized this fight was about to get a lot worse.

Zane could feel it now.

The drain.

Every breath felt heavier inside the serpent’s body, the crushing muscles around him tightening harder while acidic fluids burned against his skin and armor. Mana pulses had done damage—serious damage—but they’d cost him too much.

He was running low.

Badly low.

"...Damn it."

The inside of the serpent trembled violently as it moved outside, massive muscles shifting around him like collapsing walls. The creature was injured, yes—

But not dying fast enough.

And Zane knew it.

His remaining mana wouldn’t support another drawn-out exchange.

So he gambled.

One final skill.

A copied technique from a C-rank boss he’d killed months ago.

"We’ll see if you’re worth keeping."

Mana flared weakly around his hand.

"Forge Master."

The technique activated instantly.

Forge Master — C Rank Skill

A control-type forging ability that allows the user to dominate and reshape anything they physically touch while imbuing it with flame mana. The technique turns matter into temporary forge material, allowing the caster to heat, manipulate, and weaponize surfaces directly through contact.

The walls around Zane glowed red immediately.

Then orange.

Then white.

The serpent convulsed.

Forge Master spread through the flesh like a smith hammering metal inside a furnace. Everything Zane touched warped under his control, internal muscle hardening and twisting unnaturally while flame mana spread through the creature’s insides.

The temperature skyrocketed.

The serpent screamed outside.

Zane pressed both hands against the inner walls.

"Burn."

Flames erupted violently through the monster’s organs.

Not ordinary fire.

Forge fire.

Dense heat designed to melt and reshape matter itself. Flesh blackened instantly around him as entire sections of the serpent’s internal structure began collapsing inward under the overwhelming temperature.

The creature thrashed violently.

Good.

Zane smiled through the pain.

"That’s it."

The inside of the serpent became an inferno, flames racing upward through its body while melted tissue collapsed around him. He could feel the monster weakening now.

Slowing.

Dying.

Then—

Something changed.

The serpent stopped thrashing.

Completely.

Zane frowned slightly.

"...What?"

A cold sensation spread suddenly through the burning chamber around him.

Not physical cold.

Reduction.

The flames flickered unnaturally.

Then weakened.

The serpent had finally used its skill.

"Cool Time."

The ability activated throughout its entire body at once.

It reduced kinetic output.

Everything involving movement, vibration, energy transfer—slowed and suppressed unnaturally within its influence.

Including fire.

Zane’s eyes widened as the flames around him visibly weakened mid-burn. The forge fire lost momentum instantly, heat output collapsing as the serpent’s skill smothered the combustion process itself.

"No—"

The fire went out.

Completely.

Darkness returned instantly.

Then the serpent’s body contracted.

Hard.

The muscles around Zane compressed violently now that the flames were gone, the inner walls forcing him downward before he could properly react.

He slammed against the slick inner flesh and began sliding deeper.

Down.

Toward the stomach.

Acidic fluid crashed over him immediately.

Zane gasped sharply as the corrosive liquid ate through his armor almost instantly, smoke rising from his skin while the remaining mana around him flickered weakly.

He tried activating Forge Master again.

Nothing.

Not enough mana.

The serpent’s Cool Time still suppressed everything around him while the stomach muscles continued crushing inward relentlessly.

Zane looked upward into the darkness above him.

"...You’ve gotta be kidding me."

The acid rose higher.

The pressure increased.

And for the first time since entering the dungeon—

Zane realized there was no way out.

The serpent’s body tightened one final time.

Bones cracked.

Mana dispersed.

Then—

Silence.

Deep within the winged serpent’s stomach—

Zane died.
