The Civil Servant's Job is to Raise The Furries!
Chapter 313 - 312: I’m Back
The roar of the snowmobile engine pierced the serene mountain forest, and Xu Ying executed a sleek drift at the rescue station entrance, the snow kicked up by the tires glinting in the sunlight.
"Hello everyone!"
Xu Ying deftly removed her goggles, the white vapor from beneath her black windproof mask quickly dissipated into the brisk air.
She remembered Secretary Qin Fuli mentioning that two trainee animal rescuers were to report today, they must be the two young women before her.
On the steps of the rescue station, the two girls stared at her in awe. One had her hair tied in a high ponytail, her round face holding a hint of innocence, yet she wore professional-grade thermal gear.
The other sported a neat short haircut, her expression exuding steadiness as she clutched a folder tightly in her hand.
"Little Xu Station Chief!"
The two nearly jumped as they ran up to Xu Ying, their cheeks flushed with excitement, "We’re the new trainee animal rescuers, and here are our report documents and personal files."
"I’m Zhou Xue Ting." The girl with the high ponytail spoke in a crisp voice, her eyes bright and lively like a young deer.
"I’m Fu Ning!" The short-haired girl spoke softly, but her excitement was unmistakable in her trembling voice.
Xu Ying took the documents, smiling warmly at them: "Welcome to the Snow Mountain family~"
The documents revealed that both were veterinary graduates with more than three years of experience in various wildlife rescue operations.
Xu Ying nodded to herself, with such qualifications, they were indeed suited for the animal rescuer position in a remote area like this.
"Come on, let’s go inside; I’ll show you around the Snow Mountain Rescue Station~"
While familiarizing them with the rescue station, Xu Ying couldn’t help but ask, "Why choose to work in such a remote snow mountain?"
"Because the animals in the snow mountains are so cute!"
Zhou Xue Ting replied without hesitation, then added sheepishly, "Of course... the accommodation and meals are provided, and the salary can be saved, plus there’s no workplace scheming."
Fu Ning gently caressed the rescue cages, her voice firm: "Although field rescues are dangerous, I’d rather do meaningful work like this than deal with workplace pressure."
She gazed out at the vast snow-capped mountains, "Besides, it was after watching your videos that we decided to come."
Zhou Xue Ting looked at Xu Ying, her eyes sparkling: "Little Xu Station Chief, you might not know, but ever since your rescue videos went viral, our previously obscure remote animal rescuer position has become quite popular!"
She ticked off on her fingers, "This year, the Snow Mountain Rescue Station recruited two trainees, and the number of applicants surged. We really fought through a lot to secure this opportunity."
Xu Ying was taken aback upon hearing this; she hadn’t expected her influence to make this niche job in demand.
Though the station’s salary and benefits are indeed generous, the remote location, harsh conditions, and constant danger—she emphasized these repeatedly in every video.
"Actually..." Xu Ying shook her head gently, her tone serious, "This job is far from as glamorous as it appears in the videos. What you see are the adorable little animals, but most of the time you’re dealing with harsh environments, injured beasts, even life-threatening situations."
She looked earnestly at the two newcomers, "I don’t want anyone to choose this on a whim."
Zhou Xue Ting and Fu Ning nodded solemnly.
"Little Xu Station Chief, we’ve carefully considered our decision to join the rescue station."
Xu Ying patted their shoulders reassuringly, "But you don’t need to worry too much, with me and the animal friends around, the likelihood of facing dangerous situations is greatly reduced."
"I’ve already trained the Snow Pigeon Sentinels, Golden Eagle Scouts, and Snow Cleaning Weasel Mobile Team in the snow mountains. If there’s any danger, the animal team members will alert the animal rescuers."
Hearing Xu Ying mention the animal team, the two exchanged a glance, their faces filled with excitement and anticipation.
During the week at the Snow Mountain Rescue Station, Xu Ying acquainted the trainees with the West Mountain terrain and daily routines, both Zhou Xue Ting and Fu Ning performed excellently.
Xu Ying could now leave with peace of mind back to the Desert Rescue Station.
*
The setting sun painted the vast desert in gold and crimson hues, as a sand dune buggy sliced through the twilight, kicking up a cascade of dust upon the dunes. As Xu Ying neared the Desert Rescue Station, she paused in astonishment—
Where barren sand once lay now stood rows of young poplar trees, and surrounding the rescue station was an animal paradise built: wooden climbing structures of varying heights, rope bridges swaying gently in the breeze, along with a variety of slides, tunnels, and lookouts...
Though Secretary Qin regularly reported the progress of the rescue station’s surroundings, Xu Ying was still stunned by the transformation. The once ramshackle little rescue station had become a joyful haven for animals.
On the large cat climbing structure, atop the highest wooden post, a round Tusun lay sprawled like a "cat pancake," snoring lightly.
Ever since Xu Ying saved it from heatstroke, the Tusun refused to leave the rescue station.
Its gray-brown fur was gilded by the sunset, rising and falling gently with its breath, looking like a fluffy plush cushion. Suddenly, a yellow lightning bolt leaped from a rope bridge—
"Meow!"
The Little Sand Cat landed precisely on the Tusun’s back, its paws sinking slightly into the thick fur before bouncing off lightly.
The Tusun, used as a springboard, raised its head in confusion, its white whiskers quivering, amber eyes full of bewilderment.
It looked around slowly, finally deciding it was just a trick of the wind, and buried its furry face into its paws to resume its nap.
[Little Xu Station Chief—!!]
A yellow feline projectile suddenly launched from the top of the cat climbing structure.
Xu Ying barely parked her motorbike when a warm ball of fur collided into her arms. The Little Sand Cat rubbed its head madly against her chest, its pink nose twitching: [Station Chief Sister, you’re finally back, I missed you so much!]
"I missed you too, baby." Xu Ying rested her cheek against the Little Sand Cat’s head.
In its wake, the Black Jungle Cat gracefully approached, its sleek black coat gleaming like satin in the twilight.
It held its long neck high, golden slit pupils sweeping nonchalantly over Xu Ying, eternally aloof and elegant, until Xu Ying crouched down, whereupon its iconic long tail casually brushed against her hand in a quiet gesture of closeness.
"Sheriff, thank you for looking after the young ones." Xu Ying adeptly scratched the Black Jungle Cat under the chin.
It emitted a restrained purr from its throat, though the tip of its tail truthfully curled around her wrist.
During her days at the snow mountain, Xu Ying received a video from Secretary Qin Fuli, showing the Black Jungle Cat leading the Little Ear Foxes on a hunt.
The batch of overly chubby ear foxes taken in by the rescue station had now successfully slimmed down, the mother of the five Little Ear Foxes was healthy again.
It’s just—
