Chapter 32: A Ghost-Like Woman

The shadows hit the dome but did not bounce off; instead, they evaporated with a sound like water hitting a hot frying pan, yet they kept appearing. The townsfolk began emerging from their homes, looking apprehensively at the sky. Children hid behind their parents in fear, while their parents panicked. Soldiers ran around, trying to keep everyone calm, but even they could not tear their eyes away from the commotion happening above. They found themselves frozen in place, watching the sky with a mix of terror and fascination.

Odesse’s light felt frighteningly cold. Valex and Kael, who were not far away, saw their breath rising into the air, even as the light protected them. The dome emitted a low vibrating hum that mirrored the pulses of her heartbeat. Shadows shrieked against the dome, their claws scraping the glass.

"It’s too much!" Odesse gasped, her knees buckling.

"Breathe, little star," the spirit whispered to her. Fear and weariness began to cloud her mind, and the light from the dome started to thin. Suddenly, a massive shadow appeared and struck the dome. A tiny fracture emerged, and the powerful shadow attempted to force its way inside. Panic spread through the crowd; the townsfolk screamed and ran to their homes while the guards tried to maintain order.

Kael witnessed everything happening above, hands on his sword, but Valex was focused on Odesse, worry etched across his face, standing steady like a man waiting for his lover’s call.

"I just can’t do this!" she cried aloud.

"Yes, you can," the spirit breathed into her soul. "You have to stitch it back together before the darkness leaks through, child."

Valex began moving toward her when he heard her cry. "Your Highness, where are you going?" Kael questioned, trying to raise his voice over the harsh wind.

Valex turned back, saying, "Look at her, Kael. She’s in pain. She can’t do this."

Kael looked at him with concern, sweat glistening on his forehead, his lips trembling. "Your Highness, you need to remember what the High Chief said. She will feel a lot of pain during this, but do not stop her; the spirit is protecting her and filling her with strength."

Valex glanced at the sky and then back at Odesse. He exchanged a firm look with Kael. "Alright, but ready your sword. We have to be alert."

Kael nodded and stood tall. "Yes, Your Highness."

Odesse truly is extraordinary, more than I had ever imagined. The power radiating from her is awe-inspiring. Kael looked at Valex and nodded once more.

"Wow, the feeling of her power is magnificent. This took a long time, but it’s finally here," said Carven, seated in the forest with a smile. He looked at Grok and Elder Elias, who were sitting opposite him.

"The sun is still three hours away. I will hold your heart steady if you can hold the walls." The spirit’s voice was as soft as snow hitting the ground.

"I can’t feel my arms anymore," Odesse whispered. The spirit replied with a cold, gentle hum that felt like moonlight on water. "Then feel mine. We are the same tide, you and I."

Odesse’s spine bowed under the weight of the dome, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Then the spirit moved. She didn’t just touch Odesse; she stepped into her. For a heartbeat, Valex saw two figures: a trembling Odesse and a towering, radiant specter—before they fused together.

Odesse’s posture straightened instantly, her movements becoming eerily fluid and precise. The spirit’s voice no longer came from the air; it vibrated from inside Odesse’s own ribs. "Let go, Little Star. Let me carry the sky." A numbing, holy cold washed through Odesse’s tired muscles, drowning out the ache in her arms. It felt as though her blood had turned to molten silver, heavy and powerful, surging through her heart until she no longer felt like a woman of flesh, but a pillar of the moon itself.

The struggle vanished from Odesse’s face, wiped away like a smudge on a mirror. Her eyes, once clouded with tears and fatigue, flared into twin pools of blinding, pupilless white. When she spoke, her voice was a haunting chord, Odesse’s soft tone layered with the ancient, echoing resonance of the spirit.

Valex reached out toward her, but his hand stopped inches away. The air around her didn’t just feel cold; it felt sacred. He looked at her face and realized he wasn’t looking at Odesse anymore. He was looking at the moon, brought down to earth, wearing Odesse’s skin like a silken robe.

The dome became twice as bright because there was no longer a gap between the girl’s will and the spirit’s power. The panicked townsfolk stopped and looked at the bright light. Unable to gaze directly at it, they covered their eyes, and all the shadows were burned away, unable to regenerate.

"The sky is clear now; the dome shines bright. They won’t be back now," the voice echoed, strong and controlled. It traveled far, alerting all the townsfolk to hear it. They began murmuring, "Is it over?" "What is going on here?" "Are we safe?"

Valex looked at Kael and then took a few steps closer to Odesse. "Mortal king, do not touch her. The sun is almost here; she needs to remain here until then," the spirit warned, though its voice was calm, like a breath of wind that smelled of night-blooming jasmine and cold stone.

Odesse remained seated for three hours, the power still surging out of her and the protective dome still surrounding the pack. The sun was fully risen, and the chaos among the townsfolk had begun to settle. Most were still in a state of panic, while some tried to carry on with their daily duties. Valex and Kael stayed with Odesse at the zenith. Valex turned to Kael and said, "You should return to the palace, check on the borders, and see how the people are doing."

Kael replied, "But I can’t leave you both alone here, Your Highness." Valex looked at Odesse and said, "We will be fine. Now go." His tone was unusually soft, almost pleading, and Kael couldn’t help but sigh, allowing his shoulders to drop as he responded, "Yes, Your Highness."

Kael walked toward the gate, glancing back at Odesse. Now I understand why His Highness feels such a pull toward you, Odesse. It’s because you are magical. He turned to face the gate and walked out, mounted his horse, and rode away.

The sun was now fully out, and Valex exhaled before slowly walking toward Odesse. The warmth of the sun hit the dome, causing the silver barrier to shatter into a million glowing flakes that melted away before they touched the ground. Inside, Odesse felt the Spirit’s presence recede, like a cold tide pulling back into the depths.

"Rest now, Little Star," the voice echoed one last time, sounding farther away than ever. The light in Odesse’s eyes faded, returning them to their natural color. The sudden weight of her own body became almost too much to bear; she slumped forward, breath rushing out of her in a tired sob. Just before she could hit the stone, Valex caught her in his arms. She was pale, shivering, and entirely mortal again, but the scent of ozone and starlight still clung to her hair.

Valex pulled her closer, wrapping his cloak tightly around her shivering frame. He looked down at her, the pale, ghost-like woman who had just held back the apocalypse, and whispered, "You are amazing, my dear. Truly amazing."

Odesse’s eyes fluttered open, the silver glow replaced by a weary, human haze. She offered him a weak, lopsided smile. "I was... wasn’t I? I did good, right? I won?"

"Yes, you did, my love," he promised, his voice thick with sharp relief. "Yes, you did."

She reached up, her fingers trembling as she brushed his cheek. Her skin was still as cold as mountain snow, and Valex leaned into her touch, as if trying to pour his own warmth into her. "I almost gave up," she admitted, her voice dropping to a whisper. "The Spirit... she helped me. I was too weak on my own."

"From where I stood," Valex said, his eyes searching hers, "I saw no weakness. You were marvelous."

A small, shaky laugh escaped her. "I just didn’t want anyone to die. I couldn’t let it happen."

A single tear rolled down Valex’s cheek, tracing a path before landing on Odesse’s forehead. He looked away for a moment, his jaw tense with the memory of his own doubt. "I was scared for you. I thought... I thought I was watching you die. I’m sorry I didn’t believe in you."

Gently, she tilted his face back toward hers. "I’m just happy you stayed," she whispered, her eyes softening. "And don’t apologize. I barely survived it myself... my insides feel like they’ve been turned to ash."

Valex pressed a lingering kiss to her brow, his breath warm against her skin. "When we get back to the palace, I’ll help you bathe. Hot water, rose oils... would you like that?"

A faint blush, the first sign of returning life, touched her cheeks. "I would."

"I love you, Odesse. Truly, I do."

She smiled, closing her eyes as she leaned her head against his shoulder. "You always have. And I love you too."
