The Alpha Who Regrets Losing Me
Chapter 61 – Things They Want to Own
When Elara closed her eyes, the darkness was no longer just an absence. This time, the darkness was something filled; something suppressed, compressed, and searching for space to breathe. Her body was still weak, but her mind was slowly recovering. The last thing she remembered was the explosion in the forest... the emptiness that followed... and now this cold, metallic silence.
When she touched the bars of the cage, she felt a slight vibration at her fingertips. This was not ordinary metal. There was a thin energy circulating within it, almost invisible but definitely perceptible. When Elara pulled her hand back, she understood that the Moon inside her did not like that metal. This was an instinct, but at the same time a warning.
When she lifted her head and looked around, she realized that where she was was not just a cell. This was part of a larger structure. The walls were sterile, the surfaces flawless. Everything was too clean, too orderly. Nothing here had been left to chance. This place... was not designed to understand something living, but to dissect it.
"Elara." Adrian’s voice echoed inside the space. Elara looked forward, but this time Adrian was not standing directly in front of her. It was as if the voice was coming from everywhere at once. While Elara tried to understand the situation, she remained without an answer. She simply listened to Adrian’s voice.
"I know you’re awake," said Adrian, his voice calm but attentive. "And what you’re feeling right now... is only the beginning." Elara slowly stood up. It took her a few seconds to regain her balance, but this time she did not fall. She focused her eyes beyond the bars. "Why are you keeping me alive?" she asked. Her voice was still soft, but there was a sharp determination within it.
There was a brief silence. Then Adrian appeared, and this time he was not alone. Behind him, there were several others dressed in white. There was curiosity in their eyes, but that curiosity was not human. They were cold and attentive, more like engineers trying to understand how something works.
Adrian took a few steps closer. "I’m not keeping you alive," he said. "You are already... extremely valuable to us." Elara’s jaw tightened slightly. "I am not a lab rat." she said. Adrian tilted his head slightly. "Not yet," he said calmly. "And to be honest... I don’t know what this will turn into either." This sentence was more disturbing than Elara had expected. Because these words were filled with curiosity.
Adrian raised his hand slightly. A thin wave of light formed across the surface of the cage. "This structure," he said, "was designed to keep entities like you inside." Elara’s eyes narrowed. "Like me?" Adrian smiled. "You are not the first," he said. "And you most likely will not be the last."
The Moon inside Elara reacted to these words. This reaction was not fear. This... this was unmistakably anger. A slight burning sensation began in Elara’s chest. At first it was small, like a tingling. Then it became stronger. Adrian noticed this. The attention in his eyes suddenly intensified. "Yes..." he murmured. "This is what I wanted to see."
Elara closed her eyes. This time she turned inward. Kael’s face. Rowan’s voice. That moment in the forest. Everything came alive in her mind all at once. Then she moved closer to the Moon inside her. "Stop using me," she whispered in her mind. This was less of a request and more of an attempt to draw a boundary. The answer came when she least expected it. It was not a word, but a feeling. You called me.
Elara’s breathing quickened. "No," she said internally. "I was just... trying to survive." After a brief pause, Elara felt something deeper. To survive... requires power.
Elara opened her eyes. Adrian was still watching her along with the people in white behind him. But this time— Elara was watching them too. Elara took one more step toward the edge of the cage. She placed her fingers on the metal again. As time passed, the burning sensation in her fingers increased. But Elara did not pull her hand back. "This thing..." she said slowly. "It is not holding me captive here. It is measuring me." Adrian’s brows furrowed slightly. Elara’s awareness created a silence in the room.
One of the scientists behind him stepped forward. "Energy level is rising," he said quickly. Adrian raised his hand to silence him. He did not take his eyes off Elara. "Continue," he said quietly. Elara took a deep breath. She took a spiritual step toward the Moon inside her. And this time— instead of suppressing it, she released it. This time the energy did not explode. At first, Elara thought it was because of exhaustion. But this felt different and more controlled. Somehow, it felt more dangerous.
The surface of the cage began to tremble. Thin cracks appeared. Adrian’s eyes lit up for the first time. "Incredible..." he whispered. Elara’s eyes were turning back into that metallic orange color. But this time Elara was doing it consciously. "You cannot hold me," she said. Elara was not threatening them. This was a fact.
The energy inside the cage intensified to a visible level. Lights on the devices flickered, the system reacting to Elara. The lights coming from the walls turned red. "Stability is dropping!" someone shouted. Adrian took a step back. There was admiration on his face instead of fear.
"Stop," said Adrian, this time in a serious tone. Elara did not stop. It was not because she had lost control. This time— she was the one drawing the line.
While everyone observed what was happening, the energy density reached a point and stopped. The cage did not break, but it was no longer the same as before. Elara slowly pulled her hand back. Her breathing was heavy, but her eyes were open. "This is just the beginning," she said.
Adrian did not speak for a few seconds. Together with the people behind him, he looked as if he was mentally noting the results of the experiments. Then he slowly nodded his head. "Yes," he said. "And that is why..." he paused briefly to be certain of what he was about to say, and then continued. "We need to take you deeper." Elara’s gaze sharpened. "This place..." said Adrian. "As I said, is only a waiting room."
The doors opened. A long, sterile corridor appeared. And that corridor— was the place where Elara’s fate would be rewritten.
