The 1970s: Married First, Fell in Love Later
Chapter 288 - 287: Billionairess
"Is the supermarket still hiring?"
He Lang looked at her. "Who wants to work there?"
Xue Yue jutted her chin. "My sister-in-law’s nephew."
He Lang frowned. It wasn’t that he had anything against Zhang Qian’s nephew; he just remembered Zhang Qian’s brother and sister-in-law, especially the sister-in-law. He didn’t have a good impression of her.
"Did your sister-in-law ask you?"
Xue Yue shook her head. "Heh, no. The kid asked me himself. He said he wanted to come help out at the supermarket, and I couldn’t really refuse. I have to consider my sister-in-law’s feelings, after all."
"If that’s the case, then just let him come." He Lang figured it was no big deal. One more person or one less wouldn’t make much of a difference.
"Okay, I’ll swing by tomorrow and let him know. He can come with Xing Jun the day after tomorrow."
"Mm."
After they went to bed, He Lang said to Xue Yue, "I’m thinking of buying a motorcycle. It’s more convenient than taking the bus."
You always have to wait for the bus, which wastes time.
Xue Yue barely hesitated. "Then buy it. How much is it?"
"A little over 2,000."
With their current finances, they could even afford a private car. But considering the policies at the time—many cars were state-owned, private purchases required special approval from the ministerial level, and fuel was rationed—He Lang decided it was better to be low-key. A motorcycle was a good choice for now.
"Buy it."
A smile in his eyes, He Lang propped his head up with a hand and turned to face Xue Yue. "I’ve noticed you don’t really ask about money anymore. When I bought the house, you didn’t ask how much it cost. You don’t ask about the supermarket’s revenue, either. Have you lost interest in money?"
Xue Yue couldn’t help but laugh. "Isn’t it a good thing that I don’t manage your finances? In other families, the husbands are afraid of their wives being in control. How come it’s the opposite with you?" 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶
"It’s not good. I don’t feel a sense of accomplishment from earning money anymore."
Xue Yue pouted and held out her hand to him.
"Come on, hand over the money."
He Lang’s eyes lit up. He quickly sat up and got out of bed.
Xue Yue watched him, surprised. "What are you doing? I was just kidding."
He Lang went straight for his bag.
"I’m serious."
Then, she watched as he opened the bag, took out a passbook, and walked back toward her.
"Here, it’s all for you."
Xue Yue glanced at him, took it, and opened it.
She was instantly stunned by the number of zeros.
"Units, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands—"
Then she abruptly looked up at He Lang. "How is there so much?"
He Lang chuckled. "This is what’s left."
Xue Yue blinked. "You’re giving it all to me?"
He Lang raised an eyebrow. "Of course. I’ve already set aside the supermarket’s daily cash flow reserves. The rest is for you."
Xue Yue clicked her tongue. "Tsk, tsk." She pinched her cheek, finding it hard to believe.
"Ow, it’s real. Oh my god, if things keep going like this, I’ll be a billionaire in a few years."
He Lang corrected her, "A ’billionairess.’ The passbook is in your name, didn’t you see?"
Xue Yue looked down. Sure enough, her name, Xue Yue, was written at the top.
She looked up at He Lang and, in a burst of excitement, threw herself into his arms.
She cupped his face and planted several kisses on the corner of his mouth.
"For the sake of all this money, I have to thank you properly."
He Lang laughed. "You little heartless thing. You usually give me the cold shoulder, but you’re all over me for the money. Sigh, looks like I need to work even harder to earn more."
Xue Yue pouted, stroking He Lang’s face. "I don’t give you the cold shoulder. I still treasure you. After all, not just anyone can earn money like you can."
He Lang chuckled and lowered his head. The low rumble of his laughter vibrated through Xue Yue’s body, making her heart flutter.
She looked at He Lang and sighed wistfully. "You know, for your age, and after we’ve been married for over ten years, how is it that I never get tired of looking at you? I still think you’re so handsome and charming."
He Lang smiled. "You’re still just as beautiful. In my heart, no one can compare to you."
Xue Yue hugged He Lang.
"This is so nice. He Lang, do you think we’ll be like this for the rest of our lives?"
He Lang held her tighter, his eyes full of determination as he nodded. "We definitely will."
When Xue Yue went over the next day, Zhang Yunlei, who had barely slept all night, heard her and came running out.
"Auntie Xue."
Xue Yue told him, "You can come. Come over tomorrow morning with Xing Jun. You two can take the bus."
Hearing this, Zhang Yunlei nodded happily.
"Thank you, Auntie Xue! I’ll definitely work hard."
Xue Yue smiled.
Inside the house, Zhang Qian said apologetically, "I’m sorry for troubling you."
Xue Yue waved her hand. "It’s nothing, just a small thing."
Zhang Qian said, "If he does anything wrong, just have He Lang tell him directly, or tell me, and I’ll talk to him."
"Okay."
Zhang Qian still felt uneasy, so after Xue Yue left, she made a point of giving her nephew another talking-to.
Zhang Yunlei nodded repeatedly.
"I know, Auntie. Don’t worry, I’ll work hard. I won’t embarrass you."
Zhang Qian looked at him. "Let me tell you one more time: that supermarket doesn’t belong to our family. You’re going there to work. Do the job you’re assigned, take the wages you earn, and that’s it. You’d better not have any other ideas, and you can’t have them."
Zhang Yunlei nodded.
That evening, when Xue Xingjun found out Zhang Yunlei was going to work at the supermarket with him starting the next day, he was angry for quite a while.
Of course, he didn’t dare show his feelings in front of Zhang Qian. He just went back to his room, sat fuming on the edge of his bed, and sulked.
Xue Xingzhou gave Tun Tun a bath and waited until the child was asleep before coming over.
When Xue Xingjun saw his older brother come in, he turned his head away.
Xue Xingzhou walked over, sat down beside him, and looked at him.
"Upset about something?"
"Hmph!"
"What’s with the ’hmph’? If you’re upset, just say it. You don’t want him to work at the supermarket?"
Xue Xingjun said angrily, "Why didn’t you guys give me a heads-up before letting him work with me? We just had a fight a few days ago, and now we have to work together starting tomorrow. Isn’t that awkward?"
Xue Xingzhou said, "Weren’t you the one who started that fight a few days ago? You probably scared him half to death. What do you have to be awkward about? Besides, it’s not that we didn’t consult you; he went directly to your sister and asked to go."
"Hmph. He’s so thick-skinned."
The corners of Xue Xingzhou’s eyes lifted. "Mm, a little."
Xue Xingjun’s mood improved slightly. He looked at his brother. "You think he’s thick-skinned too?"
"Mm."
Now that he had an audience, Xue Xingjun let it all out. "I’ve had it with him for a while now. He’s been here for so long and does nothing but eat, just like a pig. After a meal, he doesn’t even clear his own bowl and chopsticks. What kind of habit is that? I don’t like the way he looks at people, either. I always feel like he has some ulterior motive. If he weren’t our sister-in-law’s own nephew, I would’ve kicked him out ages ago."
Xue Xingzhou frowned. "That’s enough out of you. It’s one thing to vent a little, but don’t let your sister-in-law hear you say that."
Xue Xingjun instantly lowered his voice. "I’m just telling you. Why are you talking so loud? Be careful or Sister-in-law will hear."
Xue Xingzhou gritted his teeth. ’Tch, this kid is lecturing me now,’ he thought.
