Chapter 919 - 233: New Year’s Eve (Part 2)
"If you like it, eat more." Ms. Ren squinted her eyes. She watched Yu Xinyan grow up. Yu Xinyan used to visit her house quite often since both families lived in the same neighborhood, very close by.
"Okay!"
"Xu Lin, drive Yanyan home a bit later, okay?"
"Sure."
The three of them enjoyed a harmonious meal.
After eating, another half an hour passed.
As it approached past eight o’clock, Xu Lin suggested that he should take Yu Xinyan home.
"Auntie, see you next year!"
Yu Xinyan bid farewell to Ms. Ren.
"Yanyan, see you next year."
After saying goodbye, Xu Lin and Yu Xinyan went downstairs.
It took half an hour to drive.
Xu Lin dropped her off outside the neighborhood.
"Go on home."
"Honey, see you next year!"
"See you next year." Xu Lin nodded.
"But, on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, I’ll video call you!"
She playfully kissed Xu Lin on the lips.
"Honey, I’m going back now!"
"Okay."
Xu Lin watched as she entered the neighborhood, and then drove off himself.
Nothing happened during the night.
The following morning.
Xu Lin drove with Ms. Ren back to the hometown.
During the Spring Festival travel rush, traffic was unusually congested. A six-hour journey unexpectedly took ten hours.
But they were considered lucky; some places had traffic that lasted over ten hours.
"Honey, we just got on the road!"
Yu Xinyan sent a message to Xu Lin as he arrived at his hometown, her family of three was just setting off.
"Ok, stay safe, lots of cars during the Spring Festival."
Xu Lin returned home to find his dad had arrived a few days earlier.
Before the New Year, things are quite busy; cleaning, fulfilling ritual obligations, and managing various tasks.
Some ancient rural customs are still preserved even in today’s fast-paced economic society.
"Your dad, that fool, said this year he hired a feng shui fortune-teller for twenty thousand per session, and he’s coming tomorrow."
Ms. Ren couldn’t hold back and had to vent to Xu Lin.
"So expensive? In the past during year-end rituals, wasn’t it that person from the neighboring village, just a few hundred bucks to settle it?"
"That’s why he’s a fool, hiring someone for twenty thousand. If he were spending my money, it’d be better—then I could legitimately scold him!"
Ms. Ren truly couldn’t hold back.
She has never believed in these superstitious gibberish, and now Xu Cheng spending twenty thousand on hiring a master is incomprehensible to her.
Xu Lin laughed, "Twenty thousand, that must be a very formidable feng shui master!"
The state opposes superstitions as some people exploit them to harm others, and there are bloody lessons from that, especially when the overall education level was lower in the past.
But really capable ones are well-supported, and highly sought after, quite wealthy.
Because when they step in, it’s at least tens of thousands, sometimes up to millions.
Of course, ordinary people can’t interact with those at such levels.
The most skilled ones are hired for major projects to select the perfect location—it’s not arbitrary.
"There’s nothing formidable about it; they’re all fake, and only your dad has money to be fooled!"
Ms. Ren is full of resentment; the two are divorced now, so the money is separate—Xu Cheng is quite wealthy.
Currently, Xu Lin doesn’t know how wealthy he is; he hasn’t asked, and Ms. Ren might not know either.
Either way, Xu Cheng is quite wealthy.
Ms. Ren continued, "Also, I’ve heard this person has six wives, huh! How ridiculous!"
Xu Lin was embarrassed because he himself had relations with six women. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺
"In modern society, having six wives—your dad says a person marrying wives must consult fortune charts and choose women who benefit him. I think your dad is up to something. Xu Lin, you might have a stepmother soon!"
"Seriously? Does that mean I can get an extra big red envelope?"
"You little rascal, you wish for a stepmother, huh?"
Ms. Ren glared at him.
"I’m joking!"
"Your dad even said that soothsayer claimed we have an extraordinary person in our family. He’s just boasting to make your dad happy. That fool actually believed it."
Xu Cheng was smoking at a distance, glanced over but didn’t say a word.
Ms. Ren looked over directly, glaring intensely.
Xu Cheng decisively turned away to continue smoking.
Ms. Ren said, "That fool, although as a mother I wish you were really great, what kind of extraordinary person—that’s just boasting. How could I dare think such things?"
"Seems like that old man is quite skilled, has some abilities, actually knows I’ve become extraordinary."
Xu Lin is indeed extraordinary.
"You’re just like your dad, no seriousness!"
"If Yanyan were here, I could chat with her. Talking to you two always irritates me."
Ms. Ren spent the evening venting to Xu Lin for quite a while.
The next day.
It’s the fifth.
New Year’s Eve arrived.
Xu Lin sent New Year’s Eve well wishes to Chi Linyue and the others.
On New Year’s Eve, everyone is quite busy.
Especially Ning Yuhuan, who started busy early in the morning.
In the countryside, New Year’s Eve is lively, especially in the afternoon, with chicken sacrifices, worshipping the gods, and coupling verses.
Ning Yuhuan’s family follows this tradition.
Of course, Yu Xinyan’s family does too. Her hometown is bustling with a huge family, dozens of people.
Very lively.
And it’s lively over at Xia Xiyao’s side too.
Her parents are divorced, and she lives with her father, who treats her well, along with her stepmother, grandparents—all in the rural hometown, it’s quite bustling.
Pei Danqing is in Capital City with his great-grandfather; today on New Year’s Eve, quite a few have returned from across the world, a lot of people, dozens.
Pei Danqing sent photos over—it’s crowded.
