Survival of the Nation: I Can Specify the Items That Will Drop
Chapter 285: Bloody Battle at the City Wall (Part 1)
In the center of the Army Formation, a siege ram emitting a purple glow was being pushed by a large number of Orcs, advancing slowly.
It was a massive black iron hammer, ten meters long and shaped like a ferocious wolf's head, suspended under a wooden frame and hoisted by thick iron chains.
Each chain was as thick as an adult's arm, and dark red runes were embedded at the connections between the links, shimmering faintly in the sunlight.
On both sides of the siege ram, four Mammoth War Elephants guarded it like four moving fortresses.
On the backs of the war elephants, the Troll Archers in the arrow towers had already begun to adjust their firing angles.
"Woo!"
A low Orc horn echoed across the plains, and the all-out attack began.
The Orc Army began to advance, with six Mammoth War Elephants walking at the very front, their footsteps heavy, causing the earth to tremble slightly beneath them.
Siege ladder carts and ladders followed behind the war elephants, their wooden wheels crushing the Grey Tundra and leaving deep ruts.
The siege ram moved slowly and steadily in the center of the Army Formation, each step accompanied by the clanking of iron chains and the rhythmic chants of the Orcs.
On the city wall, the catapults fired first.
Huge stones flew from the city wall, smashing into the Orc Army Formation with a whistling wind.
With 300 points of damage, plus the physical impact of the strike, a single boulder could knock over two or three Orcs.
However, the Orc Infantry had up to 900 HP under the blessing of the ten-thousand-man Army Formation; the Orcs who were knocked over were quickly dragged out from under the stones by their companions, dusted themselves off, and continued to advance.
One Orc was hit directly in the chest by a boulder, his ribs shattered, and he spat out blood.
But he looked down at the indentation in his chest, let out a roar, pushed the boulder off his body, stood up, and kept walking.
The power of the ten-thousand-man Army Formation's blessing was beginning to show.
Ice Burst Potions followed closely behind; the blue potion jars exploded within the Orc Army Formation, spreading clouds of ice mist. Orcs within a three-meter radius were covered in white ❀ Nоvеlігht ❀ (Don’t copy, read here) frost, and their speed plummeted.
But the damage was only 50 points; the 120 area damage minus the Orcs' 70 points of total body defense left only 50 points, which couldn't even scratch their skin.
Slowing them down was the true value of the Ice Burst Potions.
The giant crossbow bolts fired by the heavy ballistae had immense piercing power, with one bolt able to pierce through more than twenty Orcs, dealing over 300 points of damage.
Bloody holes pierced through the Orcs' chests, front to back, with black blood flowing freely.
But the Orcs glanced down, and the muscles at the wounds began to squirm, the blood vessels constricted, and the bleeding stopped.
As long as their HP did not drop to 50 points, physical injuries would automatically recover.
The Orcs pierced by the crossbow bolts pulled out the shafts, threw them on the ground, and continued their charge.
The Orcs' catapults also began to counterattack. Huge stones smashed against the city wall, but the wall remained motionless; a forty-meter-high, blue-quality city wall with integrated HP was not something a few stones could damage.
But the vicious part was the plague barrels; the yellowish-brown jars exploded on the city wall, and a foul-smelling yellow mist filled the air. A green negative mark appeared on the defenders shrouded in it: Healing effects reduced by 30%, lasting for 60 seconds.
The defenders' healers' expressions darkened, as the effects of their Healing Spells were greatly diminished.
The Mammoth War Elephants entered the range of the Troll Archers, which was 300 meters.
The Troll Archers on the arrow towers released their bowstrings, and spear-like arrows tore through the air.
A Delhi Sultanate Infantryman was pierced through the shoulder by an arrow, pinning him to the wall bricks, where he struggled and screamed.
His companions rushed over to pull out the arrow, but it was too thick to be removed.
Finally, they used a knife to cut the arrow shaft and managed to save him.
The Delhi Sultanate Infantry also had the 600 HP blessing from the Army Formation, plus the 400 HP from the wonder, bringing their HP straight to 1200.
Even with the 60 points of attack power from the Army Formation, that arrow from the Troll Archer had only dealt over 200 points of damage.
The Orc Army advanced to 280 meters, and the defenders' high-level arrow towers opened fire.
The Archers on the arrow towers enjoyed a 30% increase in attack speed and a 40% increase in range, raining arrows down upon the Orc Army Formation.
But the damage from the arrows was too low, dealing less than 50 points of damage to the level 15 Orcs.
An Orc with three or four arrows stuck in his shoulder, looking like a hedgehog, was still running fast.
Some Orcs simply pulled out the arrows stuck in their bodies, snapped them, threw them on the ground, and didn't even bleed.
Both sides advanced to 200 meters, and the Orc Archers entered range and began to volley.
A dark rain of arrows rose from the Orc Army Formation, arcing through the air and landing on the city wall.
The defenders' Archers immediately returned fire; arrows from both sides crossed in the air, and men fell on both the city wall and below it.
But the Orcs' arrows were coated with filth, causing wounds to become infected, healing very slowly, and weakening the effects of Healing Spells.
Six Mammoth War Elephants charged at the very front.
One Mammoth War Elephant blocked a giant crossbow bolt with its trunk.
Another Mammoth War Elephant stepped into a trap pit outside the city, a large pit five meters deep and about three meters wide, covered with camouflaged wooden planks and withered grass.
Half of the war elephant's body fell into the pit, its front legs stuck on the edge, unable to move.
It swung its long trunk angrily, letting out a shrill trumpet.
The heavy ballistae on the city wall instantly concentrated their fire, and ten giant crossbow bolts shot into the war elephant's head and body simultaneously.
The war elephant collapsed with a crash, the arrow tower on its back shattered, and two Troll Archers fell from the height, only to be turned into sieves by the defenders' crossbow bolts.
The Orc Army rushed to the base of the city wall, siege ladders and ladder carts were pushed toward the wall, iron hooks bit into the battlements, and the green-skinned Orcs began to climb up.
Rolling logs and boulders poured down from the city wall, smashing onto the ladders and knocking the Orcs on them down as well.
Boiling oil was poured down from between the battlements; the scalding oil splashed onto the Orcs' heads, tearing their skin and flesh, with screams rising one after another.
But there were too many Orcs; as those in front fell, those behind climbed over their corpses to continue.
Under the cover of four Mammoth War Elephants and a large number of Orc Infantry, the siege ram was finally pushed to the front of the city gate.
It stopped twenty meters from the city gate, and the Orcs began to pull the iron chains, slowly pulling the wolf-headed iron hammer backward, and then released it.
The hammerhead struck the purple city gate, producing a dull, thunderous sound.
The city gate's defensive runes flickered violently, and its durability dropped from 20,000 to 19,900.
100 points of damage!
The siege ram could only strike once every minute, requiring a full two hundred strikes, taking over three hours to break the gate.
The four Mammoth War Elephants reared up simultaneously and brought their front feet down heavily — 【Giant Elephant Stomp】!
A terrifying shockwave exploded from below the city wall, causing the defenders on a section of the wall to stagger.
Seven or eight County Soldiers were blasted away, fell off the city wall, and hit the ground, motionless.
Siege ladders immediately followed, and an Orc Centurion personally led the team to climb up from the section of the wall that had been shaken loose.
Delhi Sultanate Infantry rushed over from both sides, picked up rolling stones, and smashed them fiercely at the climbing Orcs, sending the stones and the Orcs falling together.
The First-Tier Mages' fireballs and ice cones exploded among the siege ladders, firelight and ice mist flickering alternately, but there were simply too many Orcs, and they could not be killed off.
On the city wall, every inch was bleeding.
