Chapter 35: Flawless Execution...

The chat feed went completely silent.

Then the stream interface violently flashed gold.

[VanguardFan1 has pledged a 100,000 Mana-Credit Bounty!]

VanguardFan1: 100,000 CREDITS IF YOU ACTUALLY KILL IT. I’M SERIOUS.

The Ward-Breaker pushed harder against Valeria’s locked guard. Its core made a loud grinding sound as thick, toxic corrupted mana leaked from its joints.

The pressure and mana coming off it filled the vault like still water... it was heavy and suffocating, pressing against every surface in the room.

"Now that," Zen breathed, feeling the heavy pressure from across the chamber., "is a lot of mana."

Then the Ward-Breaker’s glowing red eyes shifted.

It stopped pushing against Valeria’s golden Aegis barrier. Its gaze swept the room and locked onto Zen, focusing on him as if it had finally found what it was originally built to find

Even through five centuries of Void corruption, the deepest foundational layer of its programming was still intact. It recognized his resonance; it recognized its Creator.

It ripped its arm-blades away from Valeria’s guard, turned on its massive heels, and charged straight at Zen like a runaway freight train.

"Hey!" Valeria shrieked, feeling genuinely insulted. "Don’t ignore me!"

She sprinted after it. The Ward-Breaker didn’t even register her.

Zen stood his ground. He raised the tungsten blade just as the Ward-Breaker brought one of its massive shield-arms dow. He angled the blade perfectly, catching the edge and redirecting the force into the floor.

His boots cut deep trenches into the stone.

His muscles screamed.

Between the dead weight of the parry and the Combat Resonance blazing through his veins from Valeria’s proximity, his High F-Rank core was completely redlining.

[WARNING: MANA OVERLOAD FROM VANGUARD RESONANCE DETECTED.]

[CORE CAPACITY EXCEEDED. STRUCTURAL DAMAGE IMMINENT WITHOUT EXPANSION.] 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

The Ward-Breaker pulled its second arm back and aimed the flat weapon surface right at Zen’s chest.

The first shield pinned his sword, and he couldn’t pull it free in time. Two inches of Void scar tissue blocked his blade from the crown rune, and he was about to be crushed against the vault floor.

"Val!!" Zen roared.

She was already moving.

She threw herself into a low slide, placing her blood-red broadsword flat against the stone floor directly between Zen and the descending strike.

"Step on it!" she screamed.

Zen let go of the tungsten blade. He leaped backward and landed precisely on the wide flat of Valeria’s sword.

"Now!"

She detonated a localized burst of golden Aegis mana straight upward. The force hit Zen’s boots like an artillery shell going off beneath him.

He launched thirty feet into the air, completely clearing the Ward-Breaker’s second strike as it cratered the stone where he had been standing.

Time stretched.

Zen hung suspended above the vault and the Ward-Breaker’s massive frame. The Combat Resonance that had been building since the moment Valeria caught those arm-blades bare-handed finally crested.

[SYSTEM ALERT: SYNCHRONIZATION CRITICAL. MANA EXCHANGE RATE: 340%.]

The borrowed power hit the ceiling of his F-Rank core like a battering ram hitting a door that was already falling off its hinges. The "barrel" was simply too small for the ocean of power she was feeding him.

A violent, blinding white light erupted from his chest as his body desperately tried to vent the excess pressure.

The shockwave sent the silver drone spinning wildly before it corrected itself. Down on the vault floor, the heavy tungsten blade vibrated against the stone.

Zen raised his right hand, and the sword shot off the floor like a magnet, flying upward and snapping into his waiting grip with a sound like a chord being struck on something enormous.

He channeled every single drop of the overflowing, volatile resonance entirely into the dense tungsten to keep his core from shattering.

The metal didn’t break or fracture; it simply absorbed the overwhelming power the way it was always designed to... quietly, completely, glowing with a white-hot heat that had nothing to do with fire.

"Arclight Descent," Zen whispered.

He fell like a meteor.

He aimed for the base of the neck, targeting the exact crown rune buried under two inches of Void scar tissue.

It was the same rune he had once placed there himself in a workshop he no longer had access to, in a life he was slowly putting back together one fragment at a time.

The blade hit the joint with the force of everything he had. It drove through the tough armor and the hard corruption in one clean line, cutting the master control rune.

Blue sparks flew out, and for a moment, they looked exactly like the amber light the rune was supposed to shine.

Zen landed in a crouch behind the construct, the blade sizzling where the dark fluid of its internal workings cooled against the metal.

Two full seconds of silence.

Then the Ward-Breaker’s red eyes flickered, dimmed, and finally went dark. Its massive arms went limp as the towering frame collapsed backward. It folded at every joint, following the exact shutdown sequence programmed five centuries ago, before hitting the vault floor with a mountain-shaking impact.

A fist-sized Heart-Stone rolled out of the wreckage and stopped at Zen’s boots.

He picked it up.

Even through his gloves he could feel the density of it... Mid D-Rank, pulsing like a second heartbeat.

The chat feed, which had gone completely silent during the descent, erupted back to life all at once.

User_992: HE KILLED IT! A TWO-MAN SQUAD ACTUALLY KILLED A CORRUPTED WARD-BREAKER!

ScrapRat: Craziest mechanics I’ve ever seen! Ghost is easily the best undiscovered scrapper on the network!

MetalHead: THE LADY CAUGHT D-RANK BLADES WITH HER BARE ARMS. SOMEONE FIND OUT WHO SHE IS.

ManaJunkie: Did anyone else see that sword drop at the end? Was that pure telekinesis?!]

VaultCrawler: I’ve seen full C-Rank squads wipe to those things. They just dismantled it like it was a toy.

VanguardFan1: Clipping that entire sequence. The Ares Domain guild recruiters are going to lose their minds when they see this.

RichKid99: 50,000 CREDITS! DO ANOTHER RUN! I WILL PAY FOR ANOTHER VAULT!

VanguardFan1: 100,000 Credits. That’s all I have. Take it.

Zen read the scrolling text until he found the final message from his favorite anonymous donor at the bottom of the scroll.

Anonymous: Flawless execution. Come home safely. — N.

He turned toward the drone. He pulled his mask down, just enough, and let the camera see the smirk.

"Stream’s over," he said. "Thanks for the credits."

He tapped his terminal.

[Ghost Scrapper is now OFFLINE.]

The drone’s lights cut out, and the feed went black. The silver housing dropped out of the air, and Zen caught it by instinct.

Valeria walked over, stepping casually across the ruined machinery. She pulled her mask down to her chin, and the smile on her face was radiant and deeply unhinged at the same time.

"You cheated," she said softly. "You used my sword as a crutch."

"I used my Vanguard," Zen corrected. He reached out and tapped her nose once. "There’s a difference."

She looked like she wanted to say something else. Instead, she settled for straightening the collar of his jacket.

"Besides," Valeria added, reaching into her tactical pouch. "While you were busy showing off for the Spymaster, I did the sweeping."

She casually dumped a clattering pile of twenty-seven glowing E-Rank Heart-Stones directly at his boots. She had collected every single one from the mob phase while he was finishing the boss.

Zen let out a quiet laugh.

Now that the cameras were off, he didn’t hesitate. He dropped to one knee, plunging his left hand into the pile of E-Rank stones while holding the massive, fist-sized Mid D-Rank boss stone tightly in his right.

"System," Zen commanded. "Initiate absorption. All of them."

[PROCESSING 27 LOW E-RANK HEART-STONES...]

[PROCESSING MID D-RANK HEART-STONE...]

A huge, clean wave of power moved through him flowing through his pathways and straight to repair his strained F-Rank core.

[Absorption complete. Core fracture repaired by 15%.]

[Congratulations. You have reached Mid E-Rank.]

Zen closed his eyes, feeling the massive, newly forged Mid E-Rank pathways humming safely inside his chest. He had skipped the initial entry tier entirely.

"How do you feel?" Valeria asked, her eyes tracking the residual heat fading from his skin.

"I feel like an Emperor," Zen said softly.

He opened his eyes.

"We need to go," Zen said, grabbing his bag and securing the tungsten sword to his back. "The zone should be collapsing anytime soon."
