Chapter 14: Unholy Wasteland

[Player Weaver! Please note that in this Unholy wasteland, each death cost 30 lives.]

Amon read through the words from his system, and his heart was filled with shock.

Surrounding him, a shimmering golden barrier quickly encircled him the moment he stepped inside.

Clearly, Amon was unable to leave the Unholy Wasteland until the time was up.

Ahead, a timer coalesced, almost akin to a status screen.

It glowed with a soft blue light.

[59: 59]

[59:58]

Amon instantly felt pressured the moment he felt pressure that was far higher than his own closing in; however, glancing at the lives he had accumulated so far, the pressure he felt lessened considerably.

Amon quickly called out his system interface to see how much his strength had increased so far.

...

Roarrrrr!!!

A sharp cry tore through the surroundings, dragging Amon back to the real world.

The air in front of him emitted a snapping sound.

He failed to react in time and was instantly struck in his ribs.

Amon was sent flying, crashing heavily into the barrier.

A glowing red number appeared above his head.

-80

Each player started with 100 health points, which gradually increased by 20 at every level.

As Amon was at level 4, his health point was at 180.

The single attack had chipped almost half of his life.

Amon quickly struggled to get up, picking up the sword that had dropped due to the assault.

He finally had the time to see what had attacked him so abruptly.

What he saw made his heart grow cold.

From the wasteland, damp and riddled with dark patches of decayed earth, three snakes slithered in his direction.

Their scales were a murky shade of green, slick as though coated in swamp water, faintly reflecting the pale moonlight.

Jagged black patterns spread across their bodies like veins, giving them an ominous appearance.

Their glowing red eyes emitted a chilling light in the night, cold and unnatural, as if something sinister lurked within them.

Each movement was eerily silent. Their tongues flickered in and out, tasting the air as low hissing sounds escaped their mouths.

The damp ground beneath them seemed to darken wherever they passed, leaving behind faint trails in the mud.

[Name: Mirefang Serpent]

[Prefixes: venomous wasteland snake, silent hunter, red-eyed serpent]

[Level: 3]

[Attack Power: 71]

[Health Points: 115]

[Defence: 40]

[Speed: 72] (note that twice the agility is equal to the speed, so Amon’s speed is roughly 60, including the addition to movement speed.)

[Skill: Venomous Bite — Injects poison that numbs the target’s body and slightly slows movement.]

It wasn’t just the snakes that were present. Rather, the snakes had only been amongst the first attackers.

Around him were all sorts of creatures. Firefang wolves with fire coiling around their necks like a mantle.

A large praying mantis that moved with sharp precision, heading in his direction with razor-sharp legs, and much more creatures.

Amon wasn’t given much time to think.

The snakes immediately attacked once again.

This time he was much more prepared than before.

Although his speed was still a slight gap away from that of the snakes’, it was to a bearable extent that he could dodge in time.

A tail swept towards his ribs, another towards his head, and a third towards his abdomen, shooting like a bolt of lightning.

However, Amon just twisted in mid-air.

His blade moved like a sweeping arc, dancing through the air as it sliced one of the tails, while he dodged the other two.

—50.

Amon’s strike injured the snake, causing it to go pale instantly with just 15 health points remaining.

The other two attacked instantly, trying to protect their sibling as it tried to recover its health.

However, Amon wouldn’t give them any chance in the slightest.

He brandished his sword and closed the distance between him and the snake.

Bang!

His sword slammed into its abdomen just as it swung its tail in his direction.

—75

The snake died instantly, turning into a glowing white light. Unfortunately, it didn’t drop any loot.

Amon’s sword didn’t pause. It moved in a graceful arc, twisting mid-strike and piercing the stomach of the second snake.

Bang!

The snake exploded.

—75

The previous one panicked and quickly dived into the swamp; however, Amon wouldn’t let it escape.

Without hesitation, he slammed a blade onto its tail that was just inches away from vanishing.

Bang!

The tail exploded. Thankfully, it had been dealt damage previously. As such, with Amon’s second attack, it was instantly killed.

Amon let out a breath of relief, surprised that he had dealt with the beast.

He glanced up at the time in the skies.

[57:02]

Only barely 3 minutes had gone, and he already felt tired?

"It seems this is the place..." Suddenly, voices drifted over.

"Who’s that? There seems to be someone already inside." Another voice, sounding slightly curious, asked.

"Who else? It could only be the one who triggered the quest, Weaver." Another voice replied, a wave of slight excitement lacing their tone.

Amon wrinkled his brows slightly, then smoothed them.

Before long, more than ten players rushed into the shimmering golden barrier of light.

Instantly, a wave of alarm crashes through them.

In the village group chat, their panicked messages and cries for help could be seen.

[Axeycool: What? I just received a notification that each death here cost 30 lives.]

[Hale: everyone... huhu... it seems this is the end of my path in Nexus.]

[Darkxy: you might survive; just try to be cautious.]

[Hale: no chance of survival; surrounding us are beasts at level 3 at least.]

Waves of sadness immediately swept through the group of ten.

They regretted coming here.

Normally, once one lost all their lives in the game, they would be logged out of the game forcefully.

It didn’t just stop at that, but their classes, stats, and everything else would be stripped.

Simply put, they would become an ordinary person, no longer having a chance to walk the path of nexus.

This was the reason many of them still fell into despair.

[Auronine: Hang on, guys, I’m close to that location; I should be able to save you guys if I arrive in time.]

[Dream: It’s not good for fellow villagers to die like this; I’m forming a team quickly and we’re heading towards your location...]

[Hale: Auronine? The one rumored to have an S-rank talent?]

The chat was instantly in an uproar! If Auronine arrived, then everything could be solved quite easily.

Now all they had to do was to hang on in the mean time.
