Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 294: Hit And Run
Kazuichi stood amidst the chaos, his breath ragged and muscles straining as his eyes locked onto the hulking figure of the Omega Zombie. Its grotesque form seemed larger than ever, a twisted mountain of decaying flesh and pulsating muscle. Each step it took sent tremors through the ground, as if even the earth itself recoiled from the abomination. Hayato, seated confidently on its massive shoulder, stared down at Kazuichi and Ryuunosuke with the smug satisfaction of a predator toying with its prey.
"Come on, Kazuichi! Show me what you’ve got!" Hayato’s voice echoed mockingly, carried by the wind. His laughter cut through the battlefield like a knife, igniting a fire in Kazuichi’s chest. Years of torment, bullying, and humiliation surfaced in his mind, fueling his determination.
Adrenaline coursed through his veins, sharpening his focus. Kazuichi tightened his fists, feeling the familiar hum of his Blood Art, Synthesis, awaken within him. His muscles felt lighter, more powerful, and his senses heightened to a razor’s edge. Every fiber of his being screamed for action, to take down the Omega Zombie, and wipe that grin off Hayato’s face.
But this wouldn’t be a fight won by brute force alone.
Beside him, Ryuunosuke readied his sword, the blade shimmering with deadly intent. "We need a plan," he muttered, eyeing the creature warily. "That thing’s too big to just rush head-on."
Kazuichi nodded. "We distract it, make it focus on us while the others pick off the Mindless. If we can find a weak point, we go for it."
"Agreed." Ryuunosuke’s gaze shifted briefly to the swarming battlefield around them. The stronghold’s walls were holding for now, but the endless tide of Mindless Hybrids battered against them with relentless fury. Daizen and the Hybrids of the Sturdy Path fought valiantly, their Blood Arts lighting up the night like a storm, but the numbers were overwhelming. If the Omega Zombie broke through, there would be no stopping the slaughter.
Kazuichi felt the weight of that truth settle in his chest like a stone. Failure wasn’t an option.
Without another word, the two launched into action, moving as one. They darted through the chaos, weaving between the throngs of enemies, their movements fluid and precise. Ryuunosuke’s sword flashed in the moonlight, cutting down any Mindless that dared to approach, while Kazuichi’s limbs elongated with unnatural speed, his fists slamming into the twisted creatures with bone-crushing force. The battlefield was a cacophony of violence—screams, the clang of metal, and the sickening crunch of flesh being torn apart—but Kazuichi’s focus remained on the Omega Zombie.
They reached the creature in moments, Kazuichi launching himself toward one of its massive legs. His fist connected with a thunderous impact, but the Omega Zombie barely flinched. Its skin was thick, a layer of hardened muscle and decayed flesh that absorbed the blow like it was nothing.
From above, Hayato sneered. "Is that the best you’ve got? Pathetic!"
The Omega Zombie moved with surprising speed for its size, one of its massive arms swinging down in an arc. Kazuichi barely managed to roll out of the way as the arm smashed into the ground, leaving a crater where he had stood moments before.
"Damn it," Kazuichi cursed, rising to his feet. The creature was stronger than anything he’d ever faced before. If they didn’t figure out a way to hurt it, this battle was over before it even began.
"Focus on its joints!" Ryuunosuke shouted, slicing through the air as he dodged another attack. "It’s slow, but if we can cripple its legs, it’ll be easier to bring down."
Kazuichi nodded, recalculating. His mind raced as he analyzed the Omega Zombie’s movements. Its size was its greatest asset, but also its greatest weakness. It relied on brute force, and every attack left a momentary opening. If they could exploit that...
"Cover me!" Kazuichi yelled, springing into action once more. Ryuunosuke responded without hesitation, stepping in to distract the beast as Kazuichi darted around its flank. His eyes locked onto its knee—a joint that seemed less armored, more vulnerable.
As the Omega Zombie raised its arm to strike at Ryuunosuke, Kazuichi took his chance. With a burst of speed, his extended fist slammed into the side of the creature’s knee with all the force he could muster. The impact sent a shockwave through his arm, and for a moment, it felt like punching solid steel. But then—just barely—he felt the joint give.
The Omega Zombie staggered, its massive body lurching to the side. A howl of rage escaped Hayato as he struggled to maintain his balance on the creature’s shoulder.
"That’s it!" Kazuichi grinned, feeling the tide of the battle shift in their favor. "We can bring it down!"
But Hayato wasn’t about to let that happen. His eyes burned with fury as he raised his hand, dark energy swirling around his fingers. "You think you can stop me? I’m the one in control here!"
With a snarl, Hayato unleashed a wave of black tendrils that shot toward Kazuichi and Ryuunosuke. Kazuichi barely managed to dodge, his body moving on instinct as the tendrils sliced through the air like whips. Ryuunosuke wasn’t as lucky—a tendril caught his arm, tearing through his sleeve and leaving a deep gash.
"Ryu!" Kazuichi’s heart raced as he saw his friend stumble, clutching his bleeding arm.
"I’m fine," Ryuunosuke growled, his teeth clenched in pain. "Just focus on the fight!"
But Kazuichi’s mind was spinning. Hayato’s power—this was something far more dangerous than he’d anticipated. The ability to control the Mindless was one thing, but these dark tendrils? This was something else entirely. Something unnatural.
Hayato’s laughter echoed once more, chilling Kazuichi to the bone. "Did you really think you could win, Kazuichi? I’ve evolved. I’m stronger than you could ever hope to be!"
For a moment, doubt crept into Kazuichi’s mind. Was Hayato right? Was this battle already lost?
But then, out of the corner of his eye, Kazuichi saw something that reignited his resolve. Among the chaos of the battlefield, the hybrids of the Sturdy Path Stronghold were still fighting, still standing against the horde. Daizen was leading the charge, his fists crackling with electricity as he plowed through wave after wave of enemies. The hybrids fought with everything they had, their determination unshakable.
They were fighting for their lives. For their future.
And Kazuichi wouldn’t let them down.
With renewed determination, Kazuichi turned his attention back to the Omega Zombie. Its leg was still weakened from his earlier attack, and he knew this was their only chance. "Ryuunosuke!" he called, his voice sharp. "We’re finishing this now."
Ryuunosuke nodded, blood dripping from his wound but his eyes blazing with determination. "Let’s take this bastard down."
Together, they launched their final assault. Kazuichi went low, aiming for the creature’s knee once more, while Ryuunosuke leaped high, his blade gleaming in the moonlight as he aimed for the Omega Zombie’s neck. The two of them moved like a well-oiled machine, their attacks perfectly coordinated.
Kazuichi’s fist connected with the Omega Zombie’s knee again, this time with even more force. The joint buckled, and the creature let out a deafening roar as it collapsed to one knee. At the same time, Ryuunosuke’s blade struck true, slicing through the thick muscle of the creature’s neck. Blood sprayed through the air as the Omega Zombie’s head lolled to the side, its massive body crashing to the ground with a thunderous impact.
For a moment, everything went still.
The battlefield was silent, the Mindless Hybrids frozen in place as if their strings had been cut. Kazuichi’s chest heaved with exhaustion, his body trembling from the exertion. But the Omega Zombie was down. They had done it.
And then—Hayato’s voice, venomous and filled with rage. "This isn’t over."
Kazuichi looked up to see Hayato, still perched on the Omega Zombie’s shoulder, his eyes burning with hatred. "You may have won this round, Kazuichi. But I’m not done with you yet. I’ll be back. And next time, I’ll make sure you beg for mercy."
Before Kazuichi could react, dark tendrils enveloped Hayato, and in an instant, he vanished, disappearing into the shadows like a ghost. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚
Kazuichi’s fists tightened, his heart still pounding. Hayato had escaped. But for now, the battle was won.
As the sun began to rise over the horizon, casting its warm glow over the battlefield, Kazuichi turned to Ryuunosuke. His friend was battered and bleeding, but alive. And together, they had survived another fight.
But Kazuichi knew, deep down, that this was just the beginning. Hayato was still out there, gathering power, and the war was far from over.
"We’ll be ready for him," Ryuunosuke said quietly, as if reading Kazuichi’s thoughts.
Kazuichi nodded, his eyes hardening with resolve. "Next time, next time," Kazuichi’s voice trailed off as he clenched his teeth. It was clear that he was seething with rage, and while Hayato had escaped, he knew that this wasn’t the last time he’d see him.
He was the type of person who comes back to the person he bullies, and he does that all the time in the past. Kazuichi could tell that this time was no different. Then again, they were able to repel him a couple of times now. There was confidence in everyone that the next time he tries to do something again, they’d be ready.
