Chapter 273: A Light Push

When Ayaka arrived at the stronghold, the tension hit her like a wall. Every glance from Jurou, Arisu, Ryota, and the others carried a weight that gnawed at her, making her steps quicker, her brow furrow deeper. She had sensed something was wrong before even stepping foot inside. Their silence spoke volumes, each face more concerned than the last. Jurou sat slumped on a stone wall, his face shadowed by frustration, while Arisu paced nearby, chewing on her bottom lip, barely masking her anxiety.

"What’s going on?" Ayaka’s voice cut through the silence, firm and unyielding.

Jurou barely looked up, but the exhale that escaped him carried the burden of days of worry. "It’s Kazuichi," he muttered, rubbing a hand over his weary face. "He’s been... different. Pushing himself, sure, but it’s like he’s shutting himself off. We haven’t seen him outside his place for days. Just training nonstop."

Her eyes narrowed. That didn’t sit right. Kazuichi was always intense, but this was different. Isolation. Obsession. Two things that, when combined, led to dangerous places.

"I’ll handle it," she said, cutting off any further protest before Jurou could voice it. Her voice carried a finality that even Jurou didn’t dare challenge.

As Ayaka made her way toward Kazuichi’s home, the familiar warmth of fire churned beneath her skin. Her hybrid blood simmered, her body already preparing for what she instinctively knew was coming. Kazuichi wasn’t going to talk; she could see that now. No, words would be wasted on him. This was going to have to be settled the old-fashioned way.

Her fists clenched at her sides as she knocked on the door—harder than necessary. No response. The silence that followed was deafening, and her jaw clenched tighter. "Kazuichi," she called, her voice firm. "I’m not leaving until you open this door."

A long, agonizing pause followed, the kind that made her pulse quicken in frustration. Finally, the door creaked open, revealing Kazuichi standing there, looking every bit as distant as they had described. His eyes, usually sharp and full of life, were dark, cold, and unreadable. His aura was intense, an overwhelming power radiating from his very presence, suffocating in its strength. He had changed.

"What do you want?" His voice was a low growl, full of disinterest.

Her eyes narrowed, refusing to be intimidated. "I want a fight."

The words seemed to surprise him, just for a moment. He blinked, a flicker of confusion crossing his face. "What?"

"You’ve been training like a madman, right?" Ayaka’s voice took on an edge. "Let’s see what all that training has done. You’re not going to avoid this. Either you fight me, or I’ll drag you out of here and make you fight."

For a split second, there was silence. Then, Kazuichi’s lips curled into a smirk, though it didn’t reach his eyes. "Fine. You want a fight? You’ll get one."

They stood in the center of the training grounds, a vast expanse of stone and dirt stretching out beneath them. A harsh wind swept through, stirring the dust at their feet, as if nature itself could feel the impending storm between them. Ayaka could already feel her blood pounding in her ears, her body alive with anticipation. Heat rippled through her veins, her fire element awakening, the flames beneath her skin eager for release. But she held them back, waiting for the right moment.

Kazuichi, on the other hand, stood as still as a statue. His eyes were focused, cold, and calculating. There was no sign of hesitation, no flinch or twitch to suggest uncertainty. He radiated control. Power. And that worried her more than anything else.

Without warning, Ayaka shot forward, her fist crackling with flames as she charged. The ground scorched beneath her feet as her Detonate Blood Art activated, fueling her speed and strength. Her right arm blazed, fire spiraling around her fist, and she swung with all the force she could muster, aiming for his chest.

Kazuichi moved so quickly she barely registered it. In one fluid motion, he sidestepped her attack and lashed out with a burst of water from his palm, the torrent crashing into her side with brutal force. The cold slammed into her, extinguishing her flames and sending her skidding across the ground, the force of the hit knocking the wind from her lungs.

She growled through clenched teeth, pushing herself up with a hiss of pain. Water. Of course. Kazuichi’s water element had always been her worst matchup. But she wasn’t about to give up. Not now.

"Explode Hit!" Ayaka roared, slamming both fists into the ground. The earth beneath them erupted, flames shooting out in every direction. A fiery explosion sent shockwaves through the training grounds, the heat distorting the air, flames roaring around her. Ash and embers filled the sky, raining down like fiery confetti as the flames sought out her opponent.

But Kazuichi was faster. Faster than she could follow. In the midst of her explosion, his figure blurred, and suddenly he was behind her, his hand gripping the back of her neck with such force she could barely breathe. Electricity surged from his fingertips, a shockwave of lightning that sent tremors through her body, her muscles spasming as the current coursed through her veins.

"You’re still too slow," he muttered, voice like ice in her ear.

Ayaka’s vision blurred as she fought against the paralyzing pain, her body screaming for her to stop. But she wouldn’t. Her hybrid blood roared in defiance, and her fire ignited once more, hotter and more furious than before. "Explode!" she screamed, and her entire body detonated, fire exploding outward in all directions.

The sheer force of the explosion shook the ground, flames dancing wildly around her as she finally broke free of his grip. She staggered back, breathing heavily, her body trembling from the strain. Smoke billowed around them, and for a moment, she thought she had the upper hand.

But as the smoke cleared, Kazuichi stood there, untouched. Completely unaffected.

His eyes glowed with an eerie blue light as lightning flickered around him, and the faintest smirk tugged at the corner of his lips. A low hum filled the air, the sound of electricity crackling at his fingertips. "Is that it?" 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

Ayaka’s heart sank.

Kazuichi lifted his hand, a single bolt of lightning forming at his palm. He didn’t hesitate. With a flick of his wrist, he sent the bolt flying. It slammed into her chest before she could even react, the force sending her crashing to the ground, the lightning tearing through her like knives. Every nerve in her body screamed in agony as the electricity consumed her, burning through her veins.

She lay there, gasping, her body twitching uncontrollably. She could barely move. Her limbs felt like lead, and her vision blurred at the edges. It was over. She couldn’t fight anymore.

Kazuichi’s footsteps approached, slow and deliberate. He crouched down beside her, his cold eyes looking down at her as if she were nothing more than a challenge he had already overcome.

"This is the difference between us now," he said softly, though there was no cruelty in his voice. Just fact. "I’ve surpassed you, Ayaka."

She coughed, forcing herself to sit up even as her body screamed in protest. "You’ve... reached Level VI, haven’t you?" Her voice was hoarse, her throat raw from the flames and electricity that had torn through her.

Kazuichi’s expression softened, just for a moment. "Yes."

Ayaka closed her eyes, a mixture of relief and pride washing over her. He’d done it. He’d reached the level they all feared. But even though her body ached and her pride was bruised, she couldn’t help but smile, despite the pain. She had challenged him for this very reason, to push him, to test his limits. And he had passed with flying colors.

"Well," she said with a weak chuckle, "at least you’re not going to die anytime soon."
