Chapter 261: Death And Vengeance

Dark clouds loomed overhead as the final touches were made to fortify the walls of the Kazuichi Stronghold. Every Hybrid inside the settlement moved with purpose, driven by the urgency that had been drilled into them since the mindless horde became a looming threat. Metallic clangs echoed as defenses were reinforced, and the air crackled with a sense of readiness.

For the past several days, Ryuunosuke’s guidance had been invaluable. Under his watchful eye, many of the Hybrids were able to unlock their elemental affinities, powers that had been dormant within them for far too long. Elements like fire, wind, and earth surged from their very souls as they trained relentlessly. Kazuichi had already mastered his water and lightning elements, but he couldn’t help but feel pride in seeing his comrades gain the power they needed to defend their home.

This was it. The stronghold was prepared. They were ready.

Yet, despite the tension in the air, Kazuichi found himself restless. His blood pulsed with a hunger that no amount of training could satisfy. Today, Kaito was supposed to visit the stronghold once again. Together, they had planned a hunt to sate their thirst for battle, to slay the zombies that infested the nearby wilderness and grow stronger. However, as the day stretched on and the sun hung high in the sky, Kaito had yet to arrive.

Frustration gnawed at Kazuichi. He couldn’t wait any longer. His primal urges clawed at him, the thirst for blood pounding in his head. If Kaito wasn’t here yet, there was no reason he couldn’t start without him.

With that, Kazuichi grabbed his twin blades, sheathing them across his back, and left the stronghold. The heavy gates creaked open, allowing him to step into the untamed wilderness. The air outside was thick with the stench of decay, but that only fueled his hunger further.

As he traveled north, his boots crushing the brittle, dried leaves underfoot, Kazuichi found himself halfway to their usual hunting grounds. The trees here were gnarled and twisted, their bark blackened from past battles, and the air carried the foul scent of rot. He tightened his grip on his blades, his instincts on high alert. Something wasn’t right.

Then, his nose twitched. Amidst the familiar scent of decay, there was something else—something far more dangerous. His body stiffened as his senses heightened, and he scanned the surroundings. There was something nearby, something lurking in the shadows.

Without a second thought, Kazuichi veered off course, moving silently through the underbrush. His eyes darted between the trees, every muscle in his body coiled like a spring, ready to strike at a moment’s notice.

A few zombies staggered into his path, their rotting flesh barely holding onto their bones. Kazuichi moved with lethal efficiency, his blades flashing in the dim light as he cut them down with ease. Their blood splattered the ground, feeding his hunger, but it wasn’t enough. Not yet.

As he pressed on, the feeling of danger grew stronger. His instincts screamed at him, and just as he rounded a bend in the forest, they were proven right.

Without warning, a blur of motion erupted from the shadows. A pack of mindless Hybrids ambushed him, their eyes vacant but their bodies moving with feral intensity. Their claws slashed at him from every direction, and Kazuichi barely had time to react.

His blades swung in an arc, deflecting the first few attacks, but the sheer number of enemies overwhelmed him. Claws raked across his side, tearing through his armor and drawing blood. Pain flared through his body, but Kazuichi grit his teeth and fought back, his blades cutting through flesh and bone.

But for every Hybrid he felled, two more seemed to take its place. They were everywhere, swarming him with unrelenting fury. His muscles ached, his breath came in ragged gasps, and blood dripped from his wounds. His vision blurred for a moment, and he realized with a sinking feeling that he might not survive this ambush.

Not like this.

With a roar of defiance, Kazuichi activated his Synthesis Blood Art. His muscles bulged, his veins pulsing with raw energy as he entered overdrive. His body surged with power, his speed and strength amplifying tenfold. His blades became a blur of silver as he cut down the mindless Hybrids one by one, his movements so fast they could barely react.

But it wasn’t enough. They kept coming. He could feel their claws tearing at him, feel their weight pressing down on him, threatening to crush him.

Then, with a flash of inspiration, he channeled his elemental powers. Water surged from his hands, crashing into the Hybrids like a tidal wave, throwing them off balance. In the same instant, lightning crackled through the air, arcing from his blades and electrocuting those who remained standing. The smell of charred flesh filled the air, and the remaining Hybrids collapsed to the ground, their bodies twitching as the electricity coursed through them.

Panting heavily, Kazuichi stood amidst the carnage, his chest heaving as he fought to regain control. Blood dripped from his wounds, but he had survived. The mindless Hybrids lay dead at his feet, their bodies broken and smoldering.

But something else caught his eye. A figure, crumpled on the ground a few meters away. His heart skipped a beat.

No...

He rushed over, his feet pounding against the blood-soaked earth. The closer he got, the more his stomach twisted in dread. The figure wasn’t just any random Hybrid or zombie.

It was Kaito.

Kazuichi’s breath caught in his throat as he knelt beside his friend’s mangled body. Kaito’s skin was pale, his once vibrant eyes now empty and lifeless. His torso had been ripped open, the flesh torn apart by the claws of the mindless Hybrids. Blood soaked the ground beneath him, pooling in the dirt.

For a moment, Kazuichi couldn’t move. Couldn’t breathe. His mind refused to process what he was seeing. This couldn’t be real. Kaito couldn’t be dead. They had fought side by side for years, surviving countless battles. He couldn’t be gone.

But the truth was undeniable. Kaito was dead.

Rage exploded inside Kazuichi’s chest, hot and searing. His hands clenched into fists, trembling with fury. The world around him seemed to blur as his vision narrowed, focusing solely on the bloodied remains of his fallen friend. The mindless Hybrids had taken everything from him.

A low, guttural growl escaped Kazuichi’s throat as his power surged again. His Blood Art flared to life, and his entire body trembled with the intensity of his emotions. Water swirled around him, crackling with the electric charge of his lightning element.

But it wasn’t enough. It would never be enough.

He screamed, a primal, rage-filled roar that echoed through the forest. The trees around him shook, the very ground beneath him trembling as his power spiraled out of control. The air was thick with the scent of ozone and blood as lightning arced through the sky, splitting the clouds above.

They would pay. Every last one of those mindless monsters would pay for what they had done. He would hunt them all down, tear them apart piece by piece until nothing remained.

Kazuichi stood there, bathed in the glow of his own power, his mind consumed by one single, burning thought:

Vengeance.
