Chapter 253: Going Out

Morning light filtered through the trees as Kazuichi stepped outside, the crisp air biting at his skin. He had slept little after the revelations of the previous day, his mind too preoccupied with the looming threat of organized Hybrid attacks. Though the stronghold felt secure for now, he knew it was only a matter of time before they were tested again, and the next attack might not be so forgiving.

Determined to get to the bottom of this mystery—and to sharpen his abilities—Kazuichi had made up his mind to head out alone. There was too much at stake to wait for a larger group to form. Besides, he needed time to himself, to master the elemental powers he had unlocked but still struggled to control.

Silently, he packed a small bag of essentials, securing a few knives and his customized short sword to his belt. The weight of the weapon was a comforting reminder of his readiness, though he hoped he wouldn’t have to use it. His journey today wasn’t about fighting—not yet. First, he needed answers.

Slipping out of the stronghold’s gates before most of the others were awake, he made his way toward the mountain trails, the path winding through dense underbrush and rocky outcrops. His breath fogged in the cool morning air as his senses remained sharp, alert for any sign of movement. The memory of Ayaka’s injuries still fresh in his mind, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something more dangerous was lurking in the wilderness than what they’d previously known.

Half an hour passed as he ascended the slopes, the terrain becoming rougher and more uneven. Small streams trickled down the mountainside, their water glinting in the pale sunlight. This was familiar ground to Kazuichi, but today felt different, as if the very air was charged with something unsettling. Perhaps it was just his unease about the mindless Hybrids, but a part of him suspected there was more to it.

Focusing on his surroundings, Kazuichi slowed his pace, raising a hand to test the currents of air around him. He had to get better at this—channeling his elemental abilities on command, not just in the heat of battle. Lightning and water were his domains, but their power felt elusive, slipping through his grasp like sand through his fingers. It frustrated him.

With a deep breath, Kazuichi extended his fingers, calling upon the spark within him. At first, nothing happened. His brow furrowed, focusing harder. Still nothing. Irritation welled up inside him, but he pushed it aside. Mastery of the elements wouldn’t come easily, and impatience would only lead to failure.

Seconds later, a faint hum stirred in the air, followed by a flicker of electricity dancing between his fingertips. It wasn’t much, but it was a start. Kazuichi gritted his teeth, concentrating harder. He could feel the charge building, coiling like a snake ready to strike. His muscles tensed, and then, with a crackling sound, a bolt of lightning shot from his hand, striking a nearby tree with precision.

The trunk splintered under the force, a clean blackened mark left behind. Kazuichi exhaled sharply, feeling the surge of energy ripple through his body. He grinned to himself, pleased with the small victory. It wasn’t perfect, but it was progress. At least his control was improving.

Pushing onward, he soon reached a clearing near the base of a small waterfall, its steady roar filling the air. He stood still for a moment, closing his eyes and listening to the rhythm of the water. Here, amidst the natural elements, he felt more in tune with his powers. The water element came more naturally to him than lightning did, and he was determined to strengthen his bond with it.

Dropping to one knee, he pressed his hand against the moist earth by the water’s edge. Slowly, deliberately, he called upon the water element, urging it to respond to his will. He felt it stir beneath his palm, the cool liquid shifting and flowing in response. He opened his eyes just in time to see the surface of the water ripple, rising and bending to his command.

With a gesture, he raised his arm, and the water followed, forming a column that twisted and swirled in mid-air. It hovered for a moment, shimmering in the sunlight before crashing back down into the stream with a satisfying splash. Kazuichi let out a breath of relief. Water was easier for him to control, its fluid nature syncing with his own rhythm.

But as much as he enjoyed honing his skills, he hadn’t come out here just for training. There were Hybrids to track, and mysteries to unravel.

Wiping the moisture from his hands, Kazuichi stood and continued his trek deeper into the wilderness. The terrain grew more rugged, the once familiar trails giving way to less-traveled paths. This part of the mountains had always been dangerous, filled with unpredictable weather and treacherous footing. It was the perfect place for mindless Hybrids to roam unnoticed. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦

Crouching low behind a ridge, Kazuichi scanned the area. His heightened senses picked up a faint scent on the wind, a familiar but unpleasant stench. It was faint, but unmistakable—the scent of Hybrids. Narrowing his eyes, he tracked the smell, making his way cautiously through the trees. As he crept closer, he could hear the faint sound of rustling, then guttural growls.

Peering through the dense foliage, he spotted them. Three mindless Hybrids—two Mercs and one Hound—wandering aimlessly in a small clearing, their bodies twitching and jerking as if struggling against invisible restraints. Their movements were strange, disjointed, but what caught Kazuichi’s attention was the way they stayed close together. Mindless Hybrids rarely grouped up unless drawn to the same food source, but these three seemed to move with an eerie coordination.

Staying low, Kazuichi watched them, studying their behavior. His suspicions were growing stronger by the minute—these weren’t just ordinary mindless Hybrids. They seemed to be... waiting. But for what?

Suddenly, the Hound’s head snapped up, its glowing red eyes locking onto something unseen. It let out a low, guttural snarl, and the other two responded, their heads turning in unison. Without warning, they moved as one, heading in the same direction, their jerky movements synchronized in a way that sent a chill down Kazuichi’s spine.

His instincts screamed at him to follow. Something was definitely controlling them.

Kazuichi moved swiftly but quietly, keeping a safe distance as he trailed the Hybrids. They wound through the forest at a steady pace, occasionally pausing to sniff the air before continuing their strange march. The deeper they went, the more Kazuichi felt an oppressive presence settling over the land, like a thick fog that weighed on his chest.

After nearly an hour of following the Hybrids, they came to a stop at the edge of a large ravine. The ground sloped steeply downward, leading to a dense thicket of trees and a shallow river below. The Hybrids stood there, silent and still, as if waiting for something.

Kazuichi’s heart raced. What were they doing? He crouched behind a nearby rock, his eyes narrowing as he tried to make sense of the scene before him. Then, as if in response to some unseen signal, the Hybrids suddenly sprang into action. They leapt down into the ravine, their once-disjointed movements now smooth and deliberate.

Kazuichi’s eyes widened. It was as if they had snapped out of their mindlessness entirely, moving with a precision that no mindless creature should possess. His grip tightened on the hilt of his sword. Whatever was happening here, it wasn’t natural. And he needed to know more.

Without hesitation, Kazuichi followed them down the ravine, keeping his distance as he descended the rocky slope. The Hybrids moved quickly, disappearing into the trees below. Kazuichi paused at the edge of the thicket, listening for any sign of movement. The silence was unnerving.

Just as he was about to step forward, a sharp crack echoed through the air, followed by the unmistakable sound of footsteps. Kazuichi tensed, his hand instinctively going to his sword. He moved swiftly, darting behind a large tree for cover.

Peeking around the trunk, he spotted a lone figure standing near the riverbank, dressed in dark, tattered clothing. The figure was human—or at least, it looked human. But something was off. The way they stood, the way they moved—it was too rigid, too unnatural.

Kazuichi’s breath hitched as he watched the figure raise an arm, and from the shadows, more Hybrids emerged, their red eyes glowing menacingly in the dim light. They gathered around the figure, like soldiers awaiting orders.

His blood ran cold. Whoever—or whatever—this was, it was controlling the Hybrids.
