Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 250: Hunting Out
Chirp. chirp.
The morning air was crisp as Kazuichi stepped out of his house, taking in a deep breath that seemed to clear the lingering fatigue from his body.
Sunlight filtered through the sparse clouds, casting a warm glow over the stronghold. The scent of dew and soil filled the air, a brief respite from the usual harshness of the wasteland. His legs felt stiff, but the urge to stretch them out on a morning walk tugged at him.
From the corner of his eye, he spotted Ryota and Jurou waiting near the barracks, both of them casually leaning against the wooden beams that supported the structure. Ryota, ever the composed and vigilant leader, straightened up the moment he saw Kazuichi approaching. Jurou, on the other hand, gave a lazy wave, his carefree attitude never fully masking his keen warrior instincts.
"Kazuichi!" Ryota called out, his voice carrying a hint of excitement. "We were just talking about heading to the notice board for some missions. You in?"
Jurou smirked, already itching for action. "Yeah, we figured it’s time to gather more meteorite ores. You know... unlock that elemental power like you did."
Kazuichi raised an eyebrow, surprised by their enthusiasm. "You guys are serious about this, huh? I thought you’d take a few days to rest."
Ryota crossed his arms, a determined glint in his eye. "No time for that. The more we gather, the stronger we get. And if we can unlock our elements, it’ll give us an edge."
Just as Kazuichi opened his mouth to reply, two figures approached from the opposite direction. To his surprise, it was Arisu and Amaya, walking side by side with the same determined look plastered on their faces. Arisu had a confident stride, her eyes already scanning the stronghold’s surroundings as if preparing for their next hunt. Amaya, quieter as usual, gave a nod of acknowledgment.
"We’re heading out too," Arisu said without preamble, adjusting the rifle strapped to her back. "Can’t let you guys have all the fun."
Kazuichi blinked, surprised at the unexpected team-up. "You two are working together?"
Amaya shrugged, glancing at Arisu. Although she was young, barely six years old, she had proven her strength plenty of times already. After all, she was a Canary. "Arisu-nee said we won’t go far... and Tris-nee allowed me to go."
A brief chuckle escaped Kazuichi’s lips. He appreciated their drive, but he hadn’t expected the sudden competitive spirit from everyone around him. "Well, I guess that leaves me here at the stronghold."
Arisu smirked as she glanced back over her shoulder. "Don’t slack off while we’re gone. The more you rest, the more work you’ll have catching up."
With that, the two of them joined Ryota and Jurou, and before Kazuichi knew it, they were all heading toward the gates, leaving him behind in the stronghold. It was strange, seeing them so fired up and motivated.
A part of him admired their energy, but another part of him couldn’t help but feel restless being left behind.
Deciding to clear his head, Kazuichi wandered off, letting his feet carry him through the familiar paths of the stronghold.
The steady hum of activity surrounded him—people worked, trained, and went about their daily routines, keeping the stronghold alive and thriving. It was a sharp contrast to the chaos they had just escaped on their journey back from the training camp.
After some time, he found himself near the edge of the fruit farm, where the vibrant colors of ripening fruit stood out starkly against the otherwise dull and hardened landscape. The trees swayed gently in the breeze, their branches heavy with produce that provided much-needed nutrition for the stronghold.
Ahead, he spotted Tris crouched down beneath one of the trees, plucking fruit from the lower branches and tossing them into a nearby basket. She didn’t notice him at first, too focused on her task, but as Kazuichi approached, she straightened up and wiped the sweat from her brow.
"Kazuichi!" she called out, a smile lighting up her face. "Come over here. You’re just in time."
Kazuichi approached with a raised brow. "For what?"
Tris chuckled and picked up a ripe apple from her basket, tossing it to him. "For this. Freshly picked."
He caught the apple with ease, its cool surface smooth against his palm. Taking a bite, the crispness of the fruit surprised him. The sweetness flooded his mouth, refreshing him instantly. "Not bad," he admitted, taking another bite.
Tris leaned against the tree, crossing her arms. "So, how’s it feel being back? After everything that happened out there, I bet it’s good to be home."
Kazuichi nodded, savoring the moment. "It’s good, yeah. The stronghold’s holding up well?"
Tris tilted her head, considering the question. "We had a few minor attacks from stray zombies while you were gone, but nothing we couldn’t handle. Everyone’s been stepping up lately. It’s almost like they’re more determined than ever to make this place work."
A thoughtful hum escaped Kazuichi. He could feel that same drive in his companions earlier, the hunger to grow stronger and protect what they had built here. It was strange how quickly things could shift, but he wasn’t about to complain.
"And you?" Tris asked, nudging his arm lightly. "What happened at the training camp? Any good stories to tell?"
Kazuichi exhaled, leaning back against the tree beside her. "You wouldn’t believe half of it. We ran into an Omega Zombie, bigger than anything we’ve faced before. It nearly wiped us out, but Ryuunosuke, he’s the stronghold leader, he showed up and... well, let’s just say he’s got some tricks up his sleeve."
Tris’s eyes widened. "No way. Does he have an element like you? I heard Arisu and the others." She commented, jerking her thumb in empty air.
Kazuichi nodded, recalling the intense fight. "Yeah, stronger than any of us. But the camp was more than just fighting. And I was able to unlock my element during our stay there."
"Water, right?" Tris asked, eyes twinkling with curiosity. "I heard the rumors. That’s amazing, Kazuichi."
He shrugged, downplaying the achievement. "It’s still new. I’ve got a lot to learn."
"Don’t be so modest," Tris laughed, lightly slapping his arm. "You’ll master it in no time. I know it."
The conversation continued, drifting between their shared experiences and the challenges that lay ahead. Tris had a way of making things feel lighter, and for a while, Kazuichi allowed himself to relax, enjoying the company and the peacefulness of the farm.
Before long, however, the familiar pull of hunger gnawed at him, not the kind that could be satisfied by fruit or vegetables. It was the Hybrid’s thirst, the need for blood that surged through his veins with an almost primal intensity.
His gaze flickered toward the edge of the stronghold, where the forest stretched beyond the walls. It looked very inviting, and the smell of small prey was already occupying his mind.
"I should head out," he muttered, pushing himself off the tree.
Tris raised an eyebrow. "Already? Where are you off to?"
Kazuichi smiled, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes. "Just need to hunt. You know how it is."
Understanding dawned on her face, and she gave a sympathetic nod. "Be careful out there."
"Speaking of careful... Amaya’s grown so much, hasn’t she..." Kazuichi said, remembering the days when he had to rescue her from the traders.
"Yeah... I couldn’t believe it either. She wanted to go out with Arisu."
With a final wave, Kazuichi made his way toward the outskirts of the stronghold, where the wilderness beckoned. The thirst grew stronger with every step, a reminder of the power that coursed through him but also of the curse that came with it. He needed to feed, and small animals would suffice for now.
The dense forest loomed ahead, its canopy casting shadows over the path. Kazuichi’s senses heightened as he ventured deeper, his eyes scanning the underbrush for signs of movement. The wilderness was quiet, save for the occasional rustle of leaves or the distant call of birds.
Then, without warning, a figure emerged from the shadows—a familiar one.
"Kaito?" Kazuichi’s voice echoed through the trees as he recognized the figure of his old friend, who was crouched near the base of a tree, inspecting a small trap he had set. Kaito looked up, a crooked grin forming on his face as he straightened up. 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎
"Kazuichi," Kaito greeted with a nod. "Didn’t expect to see you out here."
"Same to you," Kazuichi replied, stepping closer. "What are you doing?"
Kaito gestured to the small trap, where a captured rabbit squirmed, its tiny heart beating furiously. "Trying to level up my Hybrid capabilities. Figured I’d hunt some of these small creatures to practice."
Kazuichi smirked, understanding all too well. "Same here. Feed the beast, right?"
Kaito’s grin widened. "Something like that."
Together, they hunted in silence for a while, tracking small game through the forest. Kazuichi felt the familiar surge of power as he fed, his body rejuvenated with each pulse of blood that entered his system. Kaito, too, seemed to grow stronger, his movements becoming more fluid and precise with every successful catch.
Eventually, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting long shadows over the forest floor, Kazuichi wiped his mouth clean, feeling the hunger within him finally sated.
"Thanks for the company," Kaito said, stretching his arms above his head. "It’s always better hunting with someone else."
Kazuichi nodded, glancing back toward the stronghold in the distance. "Same. But we should head back before it gets dark."
Together, they made their way out of the forest, the quiet camaraderie between them unspoken but understood. The thirst may have been quenched for now, but both of them knew that the battle for survival was far from over. The stronghold awaited, and with it, the challenges of tomorrow.
But for now, at least, they had this moment of peace.
