Chapter 189: Just a Beginning

[House Karzath — Lady Arinaya’s Chamber — Same Time]

The corridors of House Karzath remained silent beneath the light. Servants had already withdrawn toward the lower halls. The noble estate rested peacefully. Unaware that death had already entered its walls.

Inside Lady Arinaya’s chambers, the curtains moved softly beneath the desert winds. Golden lanternlight flickered against bronze mirrors while perfumes and oils rested untouched across the carved vanity table.

Everything appeared elegant, refined, and safe. Then from beneath the shadows near the balcony a black serpent slowly slithered forward soundlessly.

Its scales reflected no light. As though darkness itself moved across the marble floor, moments later the serpent’s body twisted unnaturally, bones cracked softly, and shadows shifted until finally Azhrakaal stepped forward in Serath-min’s stolen face, elegant, beautiful, and monstrous.

His eyes slowly wandered across the chamber, observing every detail carefully: the bed, the robes, the jewelry table, and the silver comb resting beside the mirror.

Azhrakaal smiled faintly afterward as his voice echoed softly. "So this...is where clever serpents prepare themselves before walking into danger."

Slowly he approached the vanity table, his movements calm and unhurried, like a predator with absolute confidence its prey would return eventually.

Then his fingers reached toward the silver comb, and the object itself looked harmless. Elegant silver crafted in ancient serpent patterns with small moonstones decorating the handle.

A noblewoman’s daily possession, nothing more, but Azhrakaal’s smile widened slightly because ordinary objects often made the best weapons.

Then slowly he lifted one hand, and black corruption slithered beneath his skin immediately like living venom moving through veins.

A single black droplet gathered at the tip of his finger afterward, thick and dark, breathing faintly. The chamber temperature dropped instantly; even the lantern flames dimmed uneasily.

Azhrakaal gently dragged the venom across the comb’s sharp silver teeth, slowly, carefully, and almost lovingly.

SSSSSS...

The poison immediately disappeared into the metal. Invisible afterward, undetectable but horrifyingly lethal.

One scratch against the scalp, one tiny wound, and that was enough. The venom would enter the bloodstream, corrupt the nervous system, and stop the heart slowly enough to resemble natural illness.

No blade, no visible murder, and no suspicion. Only death, an elegant death. Azhrakaal admired the poisoned comb quietly afterward.

Almost artistically, and he murmured softly. "How unfortunate...that intelligent women often enjoy brushing their hair while thinking."

Then slowly his gaze lifted toward Lady Arinaya’s mirror, toward his own reflection wearing Serath-min’s stolen face.

And for one brief second the reflection smiled wider than he did. Something ancient moved behind the stolen skin and something hungry.

Azhrakaal tilted his head slightly afterward as a faint laugh escaped him. "You should have remained ignorant, Lady Arinaya. Now your own vanity will bury you."

Then suddenly footsteps echoed faintly somewhere outside the chamber, servants approaching. Immediately Azhrakaal stepped backward into the shadows again, silent, fluid, and monstrous.

And before disappearing completely, his gaze lingered one final moment upon the poisoned comb resting innocently beside the mirror, waiting patiently like death itself.

Then the shadows swallowed him whole, leaving behind only flickering lanternlight, poisoned silver, and a chamber unknowingly waiting for tragedy.

Far away beneath Sah’qir while the empire hunted monsters in the desert... Here another monster had already executed a plan for someone’s death.

[Meanwhile at Eastern Zahryssar—Beneath the Hidden Cave]

The underground cave had begun trembling again.

Dust continued falling from the cracked ceiling while frightened villagers gathered deeper between the stone tunnels. Hatchlings cried softly beneath their mothers’ coils, and the corrupted scent spreading through the cave only made panic worse.

Meanwhile, Raevhan stood near the front passage, silently listening to the sounds outside.

SCRAAAAAPE...

Something large dragged itself across the rocks above them. One imperial knight slowly whispered:

"...they know we entered."

Raevhan’s gaze darkened slightly as his voice remained calm. "No, they knew long before we arrived."

The atmosphere inside the cave grew colder immediately because everyone understood exactly what that meant. This was not a rescue mission anymore...it was a trap.

Several villagers began trembling harder afterward. Fear spread rapidly through the tunnels while distant roars echoed from outside the cave entrance.

Closer now, much closer.

Then slowly Raevhan unsheathed his sword fully.

SHIIIINNNG.

Silver imperial steel reflected against the cave darkness sharply, cold and deadly, and his voice echoed across the cave.

"We have no choice. We fight."

The villagers froze. Several knights immediately straightened.

"It is the only way we escape this place alive." Then Raevhan turned toward the imperial mages standing behind the villagers. "I will require your assistance."

The leading mage immediately bowed, his blue spell marks glowing faintly beneath his skin as his voice hardened. "With the order of High Mage Arkhazunn...we stand ready beside you, Captain."

Raevhan nodded once, then slowly he turned toward the cave entrance again. Toward the roaring darkness beyond it, and his eyes sharpened dangerously. "Protect the villagers. We carve a path through the orcs."

And just like that the imperial knights stepped forward together. Meanwhile, outside the cave, the crimson orcs had already gathered, dozens of them, huge, distorted, and corrupted beyond recognition.

Their hollow eyes glowed faintly beneath the morning darkness while black veins pulsed violently beneath crimson flesh.

Some dragged broken weapons. Others clawed directly against stone walls like starving beasts, and all of them waited silently outside the cave entrance.

As though expecting the serpents to emerge. Then Raevhan stepped out first. The desert winds exploded around him instantly. His cloak whipped violently behind him while imperial magic symbols ignited faintly beneath his blade.

The crimson orcs froze, watching him, and then suddenly one smiled, and immediately afterward, the entire horde attacked.

ROOOOOOOAAARRRR!!!

The desert shook violently beneath their charge.

"NOW!"

Raevhan’s voice thundered across the cliffs. The imperial mages instantly raised both hands.

FWOOOOSSSHHHH!!!

Massive blue magic circles exploded across the battlefield. Ancient Zahryssar runes ignited across the sands before erupting upward into walls of burning serpent fire.

Several crimson orcs screamed immediately. Their corrupted flesh burned violently beneath the enchanted flames, but they did not stop. One enormous orc lunged directly toward Raevhan.

BOOOOMMMM!!!

Its massive claws shattered stone where he stood moments earlier, too slow.

SHLAAAASSSHHH!!!

Raevhan’s blade sliced directly through the creature’s arm. Black corrupted blood exploded across the desert sands. The orc screamed violently, but before it could recover, Raevhan twisted sharply and drove the sword upward through its throat.

CRAAACKKK!!!

The monster collapsed instantly; another charged, then another, and then five more. The battlefield descended into chaos.

Imperial knights clashed against crimson flesh while magic explosions lit the cliffs repeatedly. The orcs fought like creatures without pain and without fear.

Even when limbs were severed, they kept moving. Even when half their bodies burned, they still crawled forward.

"Captain!"

One knight shouted desperately; behind Raevhan, two crimson orcs leaped simultaneously toward him, too fast. One claw tore directly across his shoulder.

SLAAAASHHH!!!

Blood exploded across his armor instantly. Raevhan staggered briefly, but before the second orc could strike, he grabbed its jaw violently.

CRAAACKKK!!!

The captain snapped the creature’s neck sideways with brutal force before driving his sword through the first orc’s skull immediately afterward.

His breathing had grown heavier now. Blood dripped steadily from multiple wounds, but his eyes remained terrifyingly focused because behind him hundreds of villagers waited and Raevhan had no intention of allowing this cave to become their grave.

Then suddenly the ground beneath the battlefield trembled violently again.

BOOOOOOOOMMMMM!!!

Every knight froze briefly, and something beneath the sands moved, something enormous. Even the crimson orcs suddenly stopped fighting for one horrifying second.

As though listening.

Then a familiar voice roared across the battlefield.

"RED KNIGHTS!"

Raevhan’s eyes widened slightly. From the western cliffs, Varesh charged forward alongside dozens of imperial serpent knights.

Imperial banners tore through the desert winds while steel clashed violently against crimson flesh.

Varesh unsheathed both blades mid-charge. "Protect the villagers!"

The Red Knights crashed directly into the orc horde, and suddenly the battlefield turned into slaughter, steel, magic, blood, fire, corruption, and screams.

The desert itself seemed to shake beneath the violence. Meanwhile, Raevhan slowly wiped blood from his lips.

Breathing heavily now, wounded badly, and yet still standing.

Then Varesh reached him finally. "You look terrible."

Raevhan scoffed weakly. "You arrived late."

Varesh smirked faintly afterward, and then suddenly three crimson orcs lunged toward them simultaneously.

"LEFT!"

Raevhan barked instantly. Varesh moved first.

SHLAAAASSSHHH!!!

His twin blades cut directly through the nearest orc’s knees while Raevhan twisted sharply behind him, driving imperial silver through another creature’s skull. The third orc roared violently before swinging massive claws toward both captains—

BOOOOOOMMMM!!!

The impact shattered the desert rocks beneath them, but both serpent captains had already separated fluidly and perfectly coordinated.

As though they had fought beside one another for years. Varesh ducked low beneath the monster’s arm before severing its tendons instantly.

Meanwhile Raevhan leaped upward directly onto the creature’s shoulders—

CRAAACKKK!!!

And plunged his sword through its head. The orc collapsed violently beneath them, and more creatures approached immediately afterward, dozens and endless.

One imperial knight shouted desperately: "How come there are too many?"

And honestly, for one terrifying moment it truly looked hopeless. Then suddenly green light exploded across the battlefield.

FWOOOOOSSSSHHHHH!!!

Ancient spell circles ignited across the cliffs. Massive emerald runes spread through the sands like living scripture before erupting upward into towering magical barriers surrounding the cave entrance completely.

Every knight froze briefly, and then a familiar voice echoed across the battlefield calmly: "No creature shall pass this boundary."

Arkhazunn descended from the cliffs slowly.

Green robes moved violently beneath magical winds while ancient serpent symbols burned around his hands.

The High Mage’s emerald eyes darkened toward the crimson orcs as his voice sharpened. "Protect the villagers. I shall protect the cave itself."

Immediately massive green chains erupted from the sands.

CRAAASSSHHHH!!!

Several crimson orcs were dragged violently into the ground itself while magical spears pierced directly through corrupted bodies.

The battlefield shifted instantly, and the empire had finally brought its monsters too. Meanwhile, far above the battlefield, the skies suddenly darkened.

Every serpent froze; even the crimson orcs hesitated. Then came the roar, a roar so enormous—the desert itself trembled beneath it.

ROOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAARRRRR!!!

And from the heavens a gigantic silver serpent descended, massive, ancient, and terrifying. Zeramet’s true serpent form, the enormous silver serpent crashed directly across the battlefield—

BOOOOOOOOOOMMMMM!!!

Entire cliffs shattered instantly; the crimson orcs screamed violently, and then the Malik attacked, not like a serpent, not like a beast, but like divine wrath itself. His massive jaws tore directly through corrupted bodies while silver flames erupted across the battlefield.

One sweep of his tail destroyed entire groups of crimson orcs instantly, and then another roar and several creatures exploded beneath overwhelming imperial pressure alone.

The remaining orcs began retreating desperately. For the first time fear appeared within their hollow eyes because the ruler of Zahryssar had entered the battlefield personally.

Meanwhile, far above the cliffs, Levin watched everything from atop Lyresaph.

The desert winds whipped violently around him. Levin stared at the battlefield below, at Zeramet, at the empire fighting desperately beneath corrupted skies, and despite the horror surrounding Sah’qir, for one brief moment hope appeared.

Because they were winning.

The crimson orcs had begun dying rapidly beneath imperial steel, ancient magic, and the wrath of the silver serpent emperor himself.

Then suddenly the last crimson orc collapsed, and silence fell. Heavy breathing echoed across the battlefield while wounded knights slowly lowered their weapons.

Varesh exhaled heavily. "...is it over?"

Raevhan wiped blood from his jaw weakly. "It better be."

Arkhazunn slowly lowered his glowing hands while the magical barriers around the cave stabilized, and somewhere nearby the villagers began crying softly in relief.

Because finally—finally—they thought they survived.

Then the ground moved, not trembling but moving. The entire desert suddenly cracked open beneath everyone’s feet.

CRAAAAAAAAAAACKKKKK!!!

Every serpent froze instantly.

"What now—?!"

Then from beneath the broken sands—something gigantic emerged. First massive black insect legs pierced upward through the ground.

Then another, then dozens.

An enormous ant queen emerged from beneath Sah’qir itself. Its gigantic body was covered in corruption while thousands of smaller black ants poured endlessly from the tunnels beneath it.

And beside it another creature erupted from the sands. A gigantic scorpion. Its enormous venomous tail pierced through stone while glowing crimson eyes locked onto the imperial army hungrily.

Silence consumed the battlefield, pure disbelief.

Varesh slowly whispered, "...those creatures should not exist in eastern Zahryssar."

Arkhazunn’s face visibly lost color as his emerald eyes widened. "No...they do not belong in this ecosystem at all."

Even Zeramet’s massive silver serpent form stilled because now this was no longer corruption.

No longer orcs, no longer merely an ambush. Something impossible was dragging creatures from entirely different regions into Sah’qir.

And somewhere deep beneath the sands something ancient laughed softly because the true nightmare had only just begun.
