Chapter 185: Second Murder - Part 2

The commotion caused by the sudden deaths of three of the twelve members of the FGH organization who had attended the interrogation delayed the process for several hours, forcing Jeff's and Natan's groups to wait until the station was ready to continue.

By midnight, after Natan's group had finished their interrogation, Jeff's group finally got their turn.

Inside the interrogation room were three police officers.

Two officers sat at the table—a young female officer and the middle-aged man who had invited Jeff to the police station.

Meanwhile, the third officer, a strikingly attractive woman with short black hair who looked to be in her mid-twenties, sat quietly in the corner of the room.

"Excuse me, miss, but who are you—Ouch!" the middle-aged policeman said as he questioned Nubia, who had entered the room with Veena, only to be elbowed by his junior officer before he could finish.

"Haven't you seen her in magazines, senpai? She's the heiress of PoruMerc, one of the top fashion companies in the country."

"Do you expect someone like me to read fashion magazines? Anyway, this interrogation is for Ms. Veena alone..."

"Veena was still a minor less than a month ago, so I believe it's acceptable for me to stay with her as her guardian," Nubia said, maintaining her serious and imposing professional demeanor to make it clear she would not back down.

"If Nubia-senpai can't stay with me, then I won't answer anything," Veena said stubbornly, just as Nubia had instructed her earlier.

"Nubia-senpai would be sad if she got left out, so you can't make her leave," she added, nearly causing Nubia to break her composure just to scold her.

Before the two officers could decide how to proceed:

"Pfft—Hahaha."

A cheerful laugh came from the policewoman sitting in the corner.

"I think it would be fine to allow Ms. Nubia to stay," she said.

The two officers immediately complied without asking further questions.

That interact confirmed to Nubia who truly held the highest authority in the room. At the same time, her instincts told her that the beautiful policewoman in the corner was far more capable than any woman she had encountered in the business or fashion world.

The overly familiar smile the policewoman gave her when their eyes met even made Nubia feel as if the woman knew her as more than just the heiress of PoruMerc.

Setting aside that uneasy intuition, Nubia sat down at the table with Veena, and the interrogation began.

"Can you tell us what you know about this man and how you're related to him, Ms. Veena?" the policeman asked, placing a photo of Dexter on the table.

From testimonies given by other students at Veena's college, the police already knew that Dexter had tried to make a move on her during the first-year welcome party.

They expected Veena to be careful with her answers if she was hiding anything related to Dexter's death. Instead, she gave them a completely unexpected response.

"Who's that person?"

"Ehh?"

"Huh?"

"I guess the police didn't do enough preliminary investigation," Nubia said mockingly before explaining. "Veena got drunk because of that bastard, which is why she doesn't remember anything from that night."

"Even though your boyfriend broke this guy's nose using your smartphone?"

"Mhm! Jeff-senpai is our boyfriend," Veena said proudly, completely missing the point of the question and making Nubia feel embarrassed at the same time.

Veena had even forgotten about her broken phone, considering how happy she was with the new one Jeff had bought for her.

"I told you, Veena doesn't know or remember anything about Dexter."

"So that's the bastard who died, Nubia-senpai?" 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺

Seeing Veena's innocent reaction, the two officers decided to believe that she truly couldn't remember the events of that night.

However, there was still another matter they needed to ask about—something the three FGH members had tried to mention before they mysteriously died.

"Can you tell us what happened during the tree-planting and camping events your organization held at Capital City Forest Park, Ms. Veena?"

After Dexter's body and two other FGH members were found inside a pit in the forest park, the police checked municipal records to determine who might have dug it. They discovered that the Central High organization had applied to use the area for their university activities.

Jeff's group had managed to keep the police from getting involved in the assault carried out by Natan's group during the camping event. Still, as a precaution to keep the planned abduction hidden, everyone present had long agreed not to talk about the incident where Jeff was shot in the shoulder and Marc was stabbed in the stomach.

Recalling her beloved senpai's instructions, Veena answered calmly.

"We planted trees. Then Jeff-senpai, Marc-senpai, and Kris-senpai kept digging the pit for trash. After that, we went camping every night. On the last night, Nubia-senpai joined us, and she and Jeff-senpai did it in our tent while I pretended to sleep—"

"Veena!"

Nubia finally lost her composure. Her face turned bright red as she hurriedly covered Veena's lips before she could continue describing her intimate moments with Jeff.

The two officers stared awkwardly at the scene, realizing there was little point in questioning Veena further.

"Pfft—Hahaha!"

Meanwhile, the policewoman in the corner laughed cheerfully at Nubia's mortified reaction.

After Veena's interrogation ended, her friends who had attended both the welcome party and the camping event were called in one by one.

The officers asked them the same opening questions about Dexter and the welcome party. They received similar answers each time: Dexter's group had tried to make a move on them—especially on Veena—and Jeff, along with Kris and Marc, had only stepped in to take them home, resorting to violence when Dexter refused to let them leave.

Their answers about the tree-planting and camping activities were also nearly identical. However, instead of mentioning Nubia and Jeff's intimacy, they somehow replaced it with stories about their own intimate and passionate experiences, forcing the two officers to listen awkwardly as the girls described them in detail.

Next came Marc's turn.

"It's the boner dilemma," Marc said, confusing the policewoman at first before explaining. "Those bastards at FGH probably slipped drugs into the drinks at the party. The girls got drunk, and some guys ended up with a boner."

Kris followed after Marc.

"The pit we dug? It was supposed to be for compost," he said. "But we got busy at night during the camp for obvious reasons... and somehow forgot about it afterward."

It wasn't a complete lie—just a carefully selected portion of the truth, much like Marc's earlier statement.

Finally, it was Jeff's turn.

Jeff had been far more prepared than the rest of his group. But the moment he entered the interrogation room, his poker face shattered.

He had immediately recognized someone inside.

His steps halted. His eyes widened. His lips parted slightly. Even the sudden tension in his muscular body as he unconsciously held his breath did not go unnoticed.

Jeff tried to recover with his poor acting skills, but it was already too late.

Without realizing it, he had walked straight into the trap carefully prepared for him by the predator hunting him.

"You can leave this one to me," the policewoman in the corner said the moment Jeff sat down.

Though hesitation showed on their faces, the two officers quickly left the room, leaving Jeff alone with her.

"I have to say," the policewoman said as she moved to sit across from him, "I'm a little disappointed. I was hoping you were a girl."

"I don't exactly understand what you mean," Jeff replied, trying his best to remain calm, though the surprise had left him unsure how to react.

"Don't act so unfamiliar," she said with a teasing smile. "After all, you're the one who surprised me first. So tell me—did you like my gift?"

Hearing her words, Jeff finally understood the truth about Dexter's death.

Or rather, his murder.

"By gift... do you mean—"

"Mhm! Just like Santa Claus. You wrote me a letter with the things you wanted, and I sent them to you nicely gift-wrapped."

Despite her cheerful tone and playful wording, Jeff couldn't help but feel a wave of anxiety.

In fact, he was scared.

He had never imagined that she would come to see him—or that she would even be able to find him—after he had sent her the list of FGH members.

"Ah—maybe I should have dressed as Santa Claus after all," she said thoughtfully. "Or maybe you would have preferred if I met you wearing a bunny outfit instead."

She smiled sweetly.

"Right, Mr. Anonymous?"
