Pregnant and Pampered: The Heiress in a Military Compound
Chapter 45: Dexterous Yue Yihan
With that, Yue Yihan headed straight for the living room, placed the radio on the table, and then pulled Xie Changning away.
Xie Changning let him.
"Are you on leave?"
Normally, Yue Yihan would only come home at this hour when he was on leave.
"Yeah. I was worried about you, so I came back right after turning in my mission report." Her body was getting heavier by the day, and he really couldn’t rest easy.
If the Brigade Commander hadn’t rejected his application, his wife would be living in the military family quarters by now!
Thinking of this, Yue Yihan recalled his conversation with the Brigade Commander earlier that day.
He had only found out today that the Brigade Commander’s poor impression of his wife stemmed from that incident. The commander assumed his insistence on marrying Xie Changning was because she had plotted to trap him.
In reality, it was Yu Huo’s doing...
Yue Yihan turned his head to look at Xie Changning. Seeing her rosy complexion, it was obvious she was living comfortably, and a hint of bitterness welled up in his heart.
’Hmph, that ungrateful woman. She seems to be doing just fine without me.’
But after that brief moment of sourness, he realized that if she *weren’t* doing well, he wouldn’t have been able to focus on his missions at all.
From Xie Changning’s perspective, all she saw was Yue Yihan methodically hauling water to the washing machine, his expression grim. He looked like he was mulling over something from the military.
After a moment’s thought, Xie Changning decided it was best not to disturb him.
As she walked into the room, she noticed the radio on the table, and her eyes lit up slightly.
They didn’t have a television at home yet, so a radio was a nice addition.
After putting all the clothes into the washing machine, Yue Yihan saw Xie Changning fiddling with the radio. He started the wash cycle, then walked over to her. "Here, let me show you."
He turned on the radio, and the sounds of soldiers training immediately filled the air.
"ONE! TWO! THREE! FOUR!"
"ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR!"
The powerful, rhythmic shouts echoed from the radio, followed by a familiar military march. Then, a pleasant male voice came on. "Hello, everyone, and welcome back to our weekly ’Hero Stories.’ Today, our interviewee is the commander of the Army 72nd Division, 69th Brigade, 103rd Regiment, Commander Yue..."
Xie Changning’s attention was initially on the radio’s buttons, trying to figure out how to operate it herself in the future.
But when she suddenly heard Yue Yihan’s name, Xie Changning froze, looking at him in surprise.
The host’s voice continued, and soon enough, Yue Yihan’s voice came on the air.
"Hello everyone, I’m the commander of the 103rd Regiment, Yue Yihan..." Yue Yihan gave a standard self-introduction and chatted with the host about various topics. Before long, however, the conversation shifted from training to personal matters.
"Yes, my wife is the deputy director of a factory in Chuncheng. She’s exceptional..." Here, a long stream of gushing compliments was omitted.
Xie Changning gave Yue Yihan an indescribable look. "You... giving an interview like that... aren’t you afraid you’ll get in trouble?"
’If I remember correctly, this is supposed to be a very formal military program, right?’
Yue Yihan just gave a sheepish grin.
"I couldn’t help it. It just sort of... happened."
The main reason was, when he was asked about his personal life, his mind was so full of his wife that the words just started pouring out.
By now, the entire military district probably knew that the commander of the 103rd Regiment was a doting husband who only had eyes for his wife!
For a fleeting moment, Xie Changning suspected that Yue Yihan had deliberately timed tuning the radio so she would hear his praise for her, but she had no proof—
The program was about 120 minutes long, with Yue Yihan’s personal interview taking up 30 of those minutes.
Only after the first 30 minutes did the main segment of the show begin.
In the spirit of friendly roommates, Xie Changning offered her thanks. "Thanks for praising me. I had no idea I was so exceptional in your eyes."
She let out an awkward laugh.
’Great. Now not only is he famous, but so am I!’
The workers at her factory who knew her husband was Yue Yihan would definitely use his words to tease her when they saw her tomorrow!
With Yue Yihan right there, Xie Changning didn’t have the heart to ask him to change the channel. She forced herself to listen to the 120-minute military program with him. When it ended, she meant to offer a word of praise.
But the moment she opened her mouth, a yawn escaped instead.
’...How embarrassing. I knew I shouldn’t have opened my mouth.’
"My mistake. You probably don’t enjoy these kinds of programs," Yue Yihan said, a little chagrined. He should have guessed she would be bored when he saw her expressionless face earlier.
"Not at all, it was quite interesting."
Xie Changning replied politely.
She slowly got up. "I’ve just been getting tired easily lately. Don’t take it to heart." After all, he had bought all the appliances in the house; she couldn’t very well say something to spoil his mood.
So she kept her words polite.
Yue Yihan supported her as they walked toward the bedroom. "While I was away, did you feel uncomfortable at all? Or have trouble sleeping soundly at night?"
Speaking of which, he suddenly remembered: the body pillow he’d sewn for his wife in his spare time was still on his bicycle.
"Wait here a second!"
Yue Yihan turned and ran to the door. He quickly returned, holding a large, army-green pillow designed to support Xie Changning’s belly.
The pillow was as tall as a person, perfect for her to straddle.
"I heard that pregnant women get really uncomfortable in their third trimester. I asked around and found out they have these kinds of pillows abroad... I’ve never seen one, so I just made this based on my own ideas and your body shape..."
He had chosen the fabric for the pillow himself and had washed it carefully after finishing it.
The stuffing inside was also high-quality cotton he had hand-picked to ensure his wife would be comfortable.
"I hope you don’t mind it."
Xie Changning looked at the pillow in his hands. The stitches were neat and tight, and its unique shape was surprisingly appealing. She blinked a couple of times, thoroughly shocked. "You made this?"
’Huh? Are all soldiers this skilled with their hands these days?!’
Seeing her shock, he nodded shyly. "If you don’t like it, I’ll just..."
"I love it." ’This pillow is going to be an absolute lifesaver later on!’
Xie Changning snatched the pillow, showing how much she liked it and forbidding Yue Yihan from taking it away.
Yue Yihan’s eyes sparkled as he looked at Xie Changning.
’She likes it! YES! She doesn’t hate the pillow I made! I’m so happy!’
If circumstances allowed, he would have scooped Xie Changning up and spun her around on the spot.
Yue Yihan was overjoyed inside, but he didn’t let it show on his face. He supported her by the arm. "Let me help you to bed. You should get some good rest."
Xie Changning placed the pillow on her bed.
"Yihan, thank you!" Xie Changning said, her good mood evident.
After thanking him, she eagerly got onto the bed to try out the feel of the pillow while lying on her side and straddling it. Seeing how much she loved it, Yue Yihan felt deeply satisfied.
That night, Xie Changning slept exceptionally well.
When she woke up, the aroma of a home-cooked meal already filled the air.
