Chapter 168: Chapter 168: I’m Gonna Raise the Roof

May turned and looked at her phone placed at the bedside. Unable to do anything else, she shamelessly called Jacob Jennings.

Actually, at that time, Vincent Vance was at Jacob Jennings’ home and hadn’t gone anywhere.

No matter how angry he was, he absolutely wouldn’t go out and fool around—that was a matter of principle for him. He was too lazy to stay at a hotel, and couldn’t go home, so after much contemplation, he drove to Jacob Jennings’ place.

He hadn’t even had the chance to complain to Jacob Jennings when May’s call came through.

Jacob Jennings looked at May’s incoming call, shook his head with a wry smile, and questioned Vincent Vance: "Are you two deliberately trying to keep me from having a good rest?"

Seeing it was May calling, most of the fire within Vincent Vance instantly dissipated. He coughed awkwardly and intentionally told Jacob Jennings, "If she asks whether I’m here, just say I’m not."

"Alright, how about I tell her you went to a nightclub to relax? I guarantee she’ll be worried all night." Jacob Jennings chuckled, teasing Vincent Vance as he quickly answered the call.

May apologetically spoke first to Jacob Jennings: "Sorry, Jacob, for disturbing you so late."

Jacob Jennings glanced at Vincent Vance, who was busy opening his beer, and smiled politely at May: "No need to apologize. I’m naturally the bodyguard and special assistant of your big man, always ready to serve you both anytime and anywhere."

"Well, here’s the thing, your big man suddenly seems a bit off mentally, driving out in the middle of the night. I’m worried he might get into trouble, hence I’m asking you to help find him."

While on the phone with May, Jacob Jennings intentionally used the speakerphone to let Vincent Vance hear May’s words, especially when she said, "Your big man suddenly seems a bit off mentally," which made Vincent Vance thoroughly infuriated.

He slammed the table and was about to speak when Jacob Jennings quickly went to May and said: "Our big man is usually very calm; how could he suddenly lose his temper? Did you offend him?"

Upon hearing this, May immediately got agitated and complained: "How could you wrong someone like that? I’m such a gentle person; where would I dare bully him? You watched us be together, didn’t you? When he tried to hit me with a belt back then, that fierceness still makes me tremble when I think about it."

Jacob Jennings coughed awkwardly, glanced at the extremely angry Vincent Vance, and spoke up for Vincent: "That was at the beginning, wasn’t it? Now, our big man treats you so well, doesn’t he? Seeing you don’t eat, he personally went to the city to buy snacks for you at night; you should secretly be happy. Where can you find such a good man?"

"Eh? How do you know he bought me snacks at night? Oh, he’s with you, isn’t he?" May, being not foolish, quickly guessed Vincent Vance was at Jacob Jennings’ place after his one remark.

Realizing Vincent hadn’t gone out to fool around but was honestly at Jacob Jennings’ house, May let out a sigh of relief, finally letting go of her worries.

"Well, our big man is here with me, but wasn’t it you who drove him out?" Jacob Jennings said defending Vincent Vance.

"What do you mean I drove him out? He smacked the table and left on his own, alright? I didn’t dare say a harsh word!" May hmm-ed in grievance and then said, "But since he’s with you, I can rest easy."

Vincent Vance listened to that sentence, which sounded like something a wife should say, and his originally furious face couldn’t help but soften somewhat, but May’s next words almost drove him to flip the table.

"I was worried he’d go out finding a woman. Since he’s not doing that, forget it. I’m hanging up!"

Turns out, she called looking for him not out of concern for his life but merely afraid he’d go looking for another woman?

That dead girl...

Jacob Jennings also displayed a heavy expression as he looked at Vincent Vance, momentarily at a loss for words to comfort him.

"Big Man, actually, the young madam is just tough on the outside but soft inside. Don’t mind the words she usually says that could frustrate you to no end. When you really face danger, she’s genuinely concerned about you."

In the spirit of good deeds without seeking recognition, Jacob Jennings did his best to smooth things over for everyone; being the peacemaker was exhausting!

Vincent Vance took a deep breath, then exhaled, feeling terribly frustrated and thus downed the beer from Jacob Jennings’ table in one gulp.

"Big Man, you’re drinking too fast. How’re you going to get home later?" Jacob Jennings, seeing Vincent Vance drinking quickly, snatched the beer from his hands and also grabbed the stout beer on the table, placing it aside.

"I say, your stinginess is unbelievable; I’ve come to your house twice for drinks and you wouldn’t even let me have a single can?" Vincent Vance pointed at the beer in Jacob Jennings’ hand and asked in exasperation.

"Aren’t you a married man now? You can’t indulge like I do."

Adding emphasis to "indulge," Jacob Jennings intentionally said it in a way that made Vincent Vance more annoyed.

"Can’t be bothered with you!" Vincent Vance got up, walked to Jacob Jennings’ side, grabbed the beer out of his hand, opened a new can, and headed to sit on the balcony.

Seeing it was useless to dissuade him, Jacob Jennings decided not to bother and grabbed a can of beer himself, opened it, and sat on the balcony with Vincent Vance, looking at the bright moonlit night outside.

The moonlight tonight was as clear as the night before. Outside Jacob Jennings’ house was a huge garden. Looking out from the balcony, the shadows seemed rather eerie.

Perhaps the psychological impact from that night weighed heavily on Vincent Vance, so now, whenever he saw such bright moonlight and the extremely quiet nighttime scenery, he naturally recalled the scenes beneath the mountain from that night.

"Melanie mentioned before she disappeared that the manipulators of those Poisonous Insects are all the old man’s people. Even that hotel fire, May’s kidnapping, were all caused by that mysterious woman. Now I fear if the woman really can control the Poisonous Insects, it’d be a huge threat if she comes to Silverwood City."

Jacob Jennings nodded in thoughtful agreement with Vincent Vance’s view: "I understand too. Finding that mysterious woman is key now, but it’s as if she can disappear at will—how do we find her? Go back to Crestwood again? I fear we won’t have enough men uninjured to do that."

At this point, Jacob Jennings suddenly looked deeply at Vincent Vance, advising him meaningfully: "Big Man, it’s not that I’m afraid of dying, but concerning the young madam, we’ve already lost too many people over this matter. Although those people work for us, they do have lives. We shouldn’t just push innocent lives to the front solely for the young madam; it’s unethical."
