Young Master Vance Has An Enchanting Wife!-Chapter 132: The Old Master Is Dying
May Morgan’s sudden politeness in apologizing to him caught Jacob Jennings by surprise. He glanced up at her, noting her sincerity, and the anger in his heart dissipated significantly.
"Before leaving, the young master instructed me repeatedly to take good care of you, so I was just worried seeing you running around like that," Jacob explained to May, slightly embarrassed.
May came down to find Jacob because she wanted him to make a trip to Crestwood. With Jacob by Vincent Vance’s side, she would feel more at ease.
"Jacob, there’s really nothing wrong with me. You don’t have to come and watch over me," May said quickly after sitting across from Jacob.
Jacob didn’t want to watch over her either, but what could he do? If Vincent found out that he didn’t accomplish what he was told, Jacob feared that once Vincent returned, he’d surely get skinned alive.
Even if he didn’t want to admit it, Jacob understood in his heart that at this moment, May was more important to Vincent than his own life. Otherwise, with his usual caution, there was no way he would head alone to such a dangerous place as Crestwood.
"Do you think I want to? What choice do I have?" Jacob chuckled bitterly and complained, "Before leaving, the young master even dragged me from home to watch over you, showing just how much he values you. He said, if anything happened to you under my watch, I might as well not live and be buried with you."
May felt a bit embarrassed by Jacob’s words and hurriedly apologized again, "Sorry, Vincent just tends to make a fuss out of nothing. I’m behaving now and won’t go out no matter who calls me."
Jacob didn’t trust her, thinking to himself that she probably made the same promise to the young master yesterday. Yet as soon as they turned around, she followed that brat Logan Vance to the Vance Residence, and if it weren’t for the young master’s quick wit, she’d probably be on the operating table by now.
"A smart person like you, dear lady, would only make a mistake once and definitely not repeat it, right?" Jacob hinted sharply.
May coughed awkwardly, explaining in a small voice, "Wasn’t I just worried about Vincent? Otherwise, why would I foolishly run to the Vance Residence and walk into the trap?"
Jacob rolled his eyes speechlessly and exposed her again, "Were you worried about the young master’s safety? Or were you worried he was hiding something from you, which is why you wanted to investigate? Madam, sometimes, don’t be so self-important. The young master’s feelings for you? You may not see it, but from my perspective, it’s already enviably outrageous. I don’t expect you to help the young master much, but could you stop holding him back? The young master hasn’t had it easy all these years."
Jacob had grown up with Vincent, so naturally, his feelings for Vincent were far deeper than for May, who appeared halfway through. In his view, May could be dispensable, but Vincent absolutely had to live. If anyone put Vincent in danger, Jacob would not be polite about it.
Even if that person was the woman Vincent loved most.
Usually, Jacob was quite courteous to May and rarely spoke harshly. This time, however, he kept needling her with sharp and sarcastic words. If May didn’t know he was worried about Vincent’s safety, she would’ve probably lost her temper and argued with him already.
But this time, May truly didn’t feel like arguing with him because her concern for Vincent was just as great as Jacob’s.
On the contrary, Jacob’s deep-seated worry for Vincent was something she could completely understand and relate to.
"I know you’re worried about your young master’s safety, which is why you’re speaking to me this way. But how could I not be worried about Vincent’s safety too? I know Crestwood better than you do. Forget about how dangerous it is for outsiders; even for someone like me, a local, entering such a place requires utmost vigilance and caution."
May sighed softly, looked up at Jacob, and sincerely advised him, "Why don’t you make a trip to Crestwood? I just feel uneasy with Vincent not having you by his side."
Hearing May say this, Jacob’s eyes lit up, but when he remembered what Vincent had said to him in the basement last night, the gleam in his eyes quickly faded: "Madam, do you think I don’t want to go with the young master? But you’re very much in danger now. If no one is around to look after Zenith Villa, Arthur Vance will undoubtedly seize the opportunity to launch another round of attacks on you, and then you surely won’t be able to handle it."
Indeed, the danger they faced in front of the maternity store last night was something May had never witnessed in her life. Those people were so insane that they didn’t even care about Vincent’s safety, which clearly showed how desperate Arthur Vance was to get hold of her.
"Why has Arthur become so ruthless?" Earlier, his actions were minor scuffles that didn’t hurt anyone, but now, Arthur clearly has no regards for consequences and is willing to kill as many people as necessary to achieve his goal.
Upon hearing this, Jacob couldn’t help but scoff with a cold laugh, "People are selfish, especially when it comes to facing death. They’ll do anything crazy to survive."
Jacob’s words shocked May greatly: "Survive? Are you saying Arthur Vance is capturing me not to treat Logan’s father?"
"You’re too naïve. Even if Arthur really dotes on his youngest son, Logan has been in a coma for so many years. How much attachment and sentiment can there be between people? Arthur used to be someone who saved face, but now, he’s doing such despicable things for a son who’s been comatose for over ten years. This isn’t like him at all. The young master sensed something was wrong early on and has been investigating. It wasn’t until a few days ago, when I kidnapped the old man’s private doctor, that I found out he has cancer. It’s already in the third stage, and he has at most a year to live. So now, things make sense!"
After hearing what Jacob said, May couldn’t help but lower her head and look at her wrist, staring at the bluish-gray veins at her wrist, and murmured, "To survive, he goes as far as to threaten other people’s lives. Arthur Vance is too selfish."
"Camouflaging selfish gain under the banner of selflessness, that’s the real Arthur Vance. The young master has suffered no end under his oppression all these years. We see him for who he is, but it’s a pity Logan is still being used like a fool."
Jacob smiled bitterly, shaking his head and sighing.
"Not necessarily. I think Logan might not be as foolish as you say..."
Considering the words Logan had shared with her and his step back from the Vance Group’s CEO position in Vincent’s favor at a crucial moment, May was sure that he wasn’t a fool, nor completely loyal either.
