Writing Web Novels In America-Chapter 196 - 194 "Anomalies" Episode 1
Chapter 196: Chapter 194 "Anomalies" Episode 1
Silicon Valley, inside a luxurious villa.
Steve Jobs sat on the sofa, preparing to watch ABC’s "Anomalies and Creatures."
"Mr. Jobs, Wang believes that airing dramas on ABC can attract more fans,"
"And because film and television production is far more complex than audio novels, it can draw in those who can’t wait to watch the next episode and get them to listen to the paid version of the novel."
Thinking of Tim Cook’s phone call, Jobs nodded slightly.
Wang was not someone engrossed in literature or technology.
In a situation with aligned interests, such a partner was somehow more reassuring.
"Steve, want a beer?" Wozniak asked with some excitement.
Jobs turned to look at his old friend and shook his head with a sigh, "Sigh... why is this partner in mutual benefit always so simple!"
"Woz, why are you so excited?" Jobs rubbed his forehead, "It’s like when we went to see the Super Bowl live together."
"Ha," Wozniak opened a bottle of beer and passed it over, "A novel full of imagination, one that you thought would never be turned into a film or show."
"Suddenly, one day, it’s just there in front of you." He took a sip of beer and asked with enthusiasm, "Aren’t you excited?"
Jobs looked at the antiques, desktop computers, and Stormtrooper models collected in his friend’s villa and felt they were on entirely different wavelengths.
He looked at his watch, "There are still fifteen minutes until ’Anomalies’ airs officially, I’ll head to the restroom."
"Mhm, mhm," Wozniak responded absent-mindedly, then opened his laptop, logged into Twitter, and started typing away.
Jobs glanced at him and then turned to leave.
Still, he inwardly sighed, "The attributes of a nerd truly do not change with social status or wealth, huh."
When Jobs returned from the restroom, he saw his friend smiling foolishly at the computer.
"Watching ’Anomalies’ with him tonight was probably a mistake."
"Even if I wanted to check out this TV show related to Apple’s interests, I should have stayed home to watch it..."
"Ha, it’s starting," Wozniak grabbed the remote and turned up the volume.
"My name is Goodman, and the girls think it fits me perfectly."
Jobs suppressed the urge to snark and focused his attention on the television screen.
Then, he saw a young man with a look of grievance walking down the street.
"Ha, this actor is a perfect fit for the original work!" Wozniak said, laughing.
"After the big turmoil in Los Angeles, my house has been left unrented."
Watching the young man, Jobs felt like he was looking at himself from a few years ago.
After being dismissed from Apple, he too had aimlessly wandered the streets.
"It’s just, why did I run into an animation programmer while this guy meets a beautiful woman?"
"And moreover, this beautiful woman so casually goes back home with the protagonist, instead of needing to display the identity of a billionaire..."
But then, the sudden shift in the TV show’s tone startled Jobs.
"This... why does it suddenly have an atmosphere similar to ’The Shining’?"
Vampires, Werewolves?
Jobs was about to ask his old friend beside him, but then he saw a Latina Werewolf girl on TV pick up a brick.
"With great power comes great responsibility, don’t worry, I’ve got your back."
Jobs, listening to the familiar line amidst the ridiculous scenes, finally cracked a slight smile.
The following plot, unfamiliar to him from the "Anomalies and Creatures" novel, started to feel more and more amusing.
Vampires using crosses as decorations, garlic as snacks, even working in the Vatican...
"Okay, haven’t seen the sci-fi yet," Steve Jobs commented internally, "But, by overturning traditional character settings, it could pass as a decent comedy."
Then he saw the science-fiction-infused upside-down villas in the sky and the goddess munching on Burger King.
What is this...
God is a girl?
Or a crazy girl?
"Ha ha, suddenly it’s a cameo by Gwyneth Paltrow," Wozniak glanced at the TV and then started typing on the keyboard again.
"You," Jobs looked at his old friend with surprise, "you actually recognize a Hollywood star?"
"Didn’t you fail to recognize Julia Roberts when she visited last time?"
"Cut," Wozniak pursed his lips, "Gwyneth Paltrow is a hot contender for the female lead in ’Anomalies.’"
Then, there were sleepy Huskies and vampires speaking Old English, going to meet a demon.
By the time the lawful good demon appeared, Jobs was completely flustered.
"Is this science fiction?" he asked Wozniak loudly.
"How could they cut so much..." Wozniak frowned and muttered in a low voice, "Is it to speed up the appearance of science fiction elements?"
...
In Tennessee, at Leonard’s house.
Tonight, after a long time, his sister, who couldn’t watch TV with them, was finally able to sit on the couch with her family.
"The character selection is perfect, and the sky villas and props are quite consistent with the original work," Leonard thought, still somewhat dissatisfied.
"It’s just that they cut out too much."
"Not at all!" His sister watched the TV, her eyes sparkling.
"The werewolves and vampires are so cute!"
"And, God is a woman." Their mother nodded in satisfaction.
"Mhm," their father muttered as he watched the behind-the-scenes footage on TV, "The costumes are beautiful."
"All right, kids," their father stood up, "Time to go to bed!"
"Then Dad, you have to buy me werewolf and vampire toys," his little daughter pleaded sweetly.
"Yes, I’ll buy them!" The father glanced at the mother, "And I have to buy your mother two dresses."
Leonard also stood up, looking a bit sulky.
"What’s wrong, Leonard?" his mother looked at her son and asked, "Should we watch ’Everybody Loves Raymond’ from now on?"
"No!" his sister protested loudly, "I want to watch werewolves, watch vampires!"
Leonard thought for a moment and shook his head, "I’m going to criticize the producers on Twitter!"
...
"’Anomalies and Creatures’ is two points behind ’Everybody Loves Raymond’ from the last episode in the ratings."
ABC’s rapid statistics staff reported to the producer, James.
"How about compared to ’Superman’?" James asked expressionlessly.
"It’s up by 7 percentage points."
"And compared to the first episode of ’Raymond’?" James asked.
"It’s up by 1 percentage point," the staff member replied.
James looked at the ratings report, "Heh, that’s a decent start."
"Go fax this to Wang."
"Yes." The staff member turned and quickly walked away.
