Capítulo 1769: Chapter 786: The Year 2000 Marks a Global Upheaval! (Part 4)
Inside the checkpoint command post, General Baker had just finished a conversation with Mexico City, conveying Victor’s instructions on strengthening border control and monitoring refugee movements.
After receiving a report from the front lines, he immediately walked to the surveillance screen, studying the blurry images transmitted by the tower camera, observing the chaos of dust and the surging crowd, his face darkened.
“Can you identify the pursuers?” Baker asked.
“Too far, too chaotic, can’t clearly distinguish! But they are definitely not regular troops, the formation is scattered, shooting at will!” replied the Lieutenant.
“How many refugees are there?”
“Over two thousand! And increasing! They’re very panicked, some people are already nearing the barbed wire obstacles!”
Baker quickly weighed the situation.
Victor’s order was to “provide limited border control assistance based on humanitarian grounds,” but the premise was “not to intervene actively.” The current situation was that the unrest was spreading towards his defense line and those armed militants clearly didn’t care about any boundary lines.
“Fire warning shots to disperse refugees getting too close to the barbed wire. Use the loudspeakers to broadcast orders for them to evacuate to the sides, do not charge the military line. Also, warn the pursuing armed personnel that they are approaching the Mexican United States Illinois border military control zone, immediately cease advancement and firing, otherwise it will be perceived as a hostile act.”
He paused, adding: “Focus on observing the leaders and heavy firepower among the pursuers, if they ignore the warnings and continue to attack the refugees or our defense line, I authorize you to carry out deterrent precision shooting. Don’t let them cross the buffer zone median. Additionally, immediately deploy two armored vehicles outside the barbed wire to establish interception positions, but don’t fire unless attacked.”
Orders were given.
The tower machine gun fired a burst of bullets into the sky, the piercing gunshots temporarily suppressed part of the chaos. The loudspeaker repeatedly played Baker’s warning in English and Spanish.
Panicked refugees streamed to the sides under the sound of gunfire and warnings, but the crowd behind them continued to surge, squeezing the space.
Some desperate people started trying to climb the barbed wire, driven back by soldiers with rifle butts and batons.
The pursuing mob heard the warning, also saw the Mexican tower and the armored vehicles starting to move forward.
They hesitated, slowed down. But among the crowd, a few people appearing as leaders, waved pistols, shouting, “What are you afraid of! Grab! There’s plenty of fat sheep ahead!”
A mob-driven pickup truck with welded steel plates, perhaps blinded by killing, perhaps stirred by the leaders, accelerated, attempting to flank the refugee crowd, the light machine gunner on the vehicle randomly shot at the sky and ground.
“Bang!”
A gunshot sounded.
The driver’s head jerked backward sharply, blood splattering on the windshield. The vehicle lost control, veering into a dirt ditch, stalling.
A Mexican sniper fired the shot.
The pursuing group froze instantly. They didn’t expect such accurate shooting from the opponent.
Several leaders hurriedly ducked down, hiding behind cover.
The loudspeaker’s warning sounded again, increasingly stern: “Last warning! All armed personnel, immediately lay down weapons and retreat! Repeat, immediately retreat!”
The mob and bandits began to waver. Bullying civilians was one thing, but facing organized military, especially when the opponent clearly had geographical and firepower advantages, their courage waned rapidly.
Some began to turn and run back.
At that moment, a few screams suddenly erupted among the refugee crowd. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂
Several men who looked no different from refugees, but with fierce expressions, suddenly drew submachine guns and pistols from their clothes, not aiming at the pursuers, but at the surrounding refugees and the direction of the Mexican checkpoint, firing madly!
“It’s an ambush!”
“They’re disguised! Shoot!”
The scene descended into chaos.
Bullets flew wildly, refugees fell like wheat being cut, blood stained the yellow earth. The Mexican soldiers caught off guard, two fell instantly hit by bullets.
“Fire at will! Eliminate all those attacking with weapons!” The front-line Lieutenant’s eyes turned red, shouting orders.
The tower machine gun spit fire, the heavy machine gun on the armored vehicles joined the chorus, bullets poured like water onto those suddenly attacking assailants and the still resisting mob.
The attackers were evidently trained to some degree, using refugees and terrain as cover, engaging in a firefight with the Mexican forces.
But they were numerically at a significant disadvantage and had weaker firepower. Under the organized counterattack from the Mexican army, they were quickly suppressed, suffering heavy casualties.
The battle largely stopped after twenty minutes. The pursuing mob scattered like birds and beasts, disappearing into the eastern wilds.
Those attackers disguised as refugees, aside from a few who escaped, mostly were killed.
The buffer zone was a mess, smoke hung in the air.
On the ground lay dozens of bodies, including refugees, mob members, attackers. The groans of the wounded and the cries of surviving refugees intertwined like a scene from Hell.
The Mexican soldiers cautiously began to clear the battlefield, tending to their wounded, while vigilantly monitoring the surviving refugees and the eastern direction.
General Baker received a detailed report in the command post, his face pale. He picked up the red phone, directly connecting to Mexico City.
“Leader, there’s been an incident at the border.” He succinctly reported the situation, “Preliminary assessment is that the disguised group, their equipment and tactics don’t seem like ordinary bandits or fanatics, we captured one severely injured, found documents on them.”
He paused, “But the documents are forged, the style and materials are very similar to those used by certain European intelligence agencies. Also, the submachine guns they used are Czech-made ‘Scorpions’, but the serial numbers were worn off, these weapons are rare in the black market, more commonly found in some ‘special units’ hands.”
On the other side of the phone, Victor was silent for a few seconds.
“After screening the refugees, allow those who genuinely face difficulties and pose no threat to enter designated temporary settlements under strict monitoring. But the scale must be controlled, procedures must be strict, casualties handled as per procedure. As for those ‘Scorpions’…”
“Keep the evidence, it seems someone doesn’t want us to stay peacefully farming, wants to bring the fire directly to us.”
“Remember, I’m giving you full authorization, don’t let those with ill intentions ruin our foothold in the United States!”
Baker took a deep breath, “Understood! Ensuring mission completion.”
After hanging up, he quickly issued orders, dispatching a regiment to the border!
“Officer.”
The secretary quietly called beside him, “Some local people want to invite you to dinner, to congratulate you on your trusted position.”
Baker frowned at the other person, he disliked these things, but understood, to establish firm poles in an alien land.
Can’t rely entirely on guns!
“Let them arrange as they wish.”
The secretary was delighted, “Alright!”
