Chapter 47 -45 Picking up trash

After returning to the acquisition station, Shen Yunfang didn’t feel like doing anything and just lay on the traditional brick bed, contemplating what to do in the future. Although she had psychologically prepared herself, the recent scare had left her feeling timid about going out to sell vegetables again.

If she couldn’t run her business, then she had to do something else; she couldn’t afford to have come this far for nothing.

Having realized this, she could no longer lie still on the bed. With brisk movements, she got up, ready to see if there was anything in the backyard that she could use.

In her previous life, she had read many novels about rebirth and time-travel, where the protagonists who ended up in this time period said that acquisition stations were treasure troves.

All those things that looked old and battered, ignored by others, would end up in acquisition stations.

Shen Yunfang didn’t know how much would be left at this point for her, but she wouldn’t be content without seeing and searching through it herself.

Moreover, she had a space that could only store things; if she really found anything of value for collecting, she could hold onto it for thirty or forty years. Once she sold those items, she could certainly become wealthy. Even if she became too old to spend the money, she could still leave it for her children, couldn’t she?

Of course, before getting to work, she didn’t forget to take care of her dinner. She poked the stove with an iron tool to stoke the flames, added some water, and cleaned the iron pot before setting it on the stove.

She took out some large bones and sauerkraut from her space. Without any oil, there was no need to preheat the pot; she just boiled the large bones in water. Once the water boiled, she added the pre-cut sauerkraut and threw in some pig’s intestines, liver, and heart on top.

After adding the seasoning, she didn’t need to look after it anymore and headed straight to the backyard to hunt for treasures.

The items in the backyard were piled here and there. Although Shen Yunfeng had been organizing them while working, it was only a matter of grouping similar items together; it still looked messy.

Shen Yunfang walked into the backyard with a large broom, first sweeping away the snow to see what lay beneath.

The first thing to emerge from under the snow was a pile of bones of various kinds, which looked somewhat eerie. Shen Yunfang couldn’t understand why the government would collect these bones.

However, these bones were indeed something she could use right now. It was lucky that she had found something useful right at the start.

With the bones, she could make bone powder by hand for use as feed when she raised pigs next year.

Though she also planned to raise pigs, her method would be different from the current farmers; she intended to practice scientific pig farming.

Looking around, Shen Yunfang decided she needed to find a way to set up a stove in the backyard. There should be some broken pots and pans around, and she had firewood in her space. Whenever she found time, she could start making bone powder right there.

With her mind made up, she continued to sweep the snow.

Beside her, there was a pile of hemp ropes and pieces of broken hemp bags, along with some indeterminable aged plastic sheets.

Against the wall was a neatly stacked pile of liquor bottles…

She didn’t need any of these.

Then she came across a pile of scrap metal and old brass.

The winter weather was cold, and metal objects left outside for a long time felt even colder. Fearing that her hands would stick to the cold metal, Shen Yunfang put on a pair of gloves before she began rummaging through the pile.

The pile of scrap metal was like a small mountain, and it took quite a bit of effort to sort through it. She put the items she took a liking to on one side and threw the ones she found unappealing back to the other side.

Thus, she busied herself in the backyard for a full three hours. It was completely dark by the time she stomp back into the house with her feet frozen solid.

Upon entering the house, there was a fragrant aroma throughout. The sauerkraut with pork bones in the pot was ready; she had come back in the middle to add some water, and after simmering for three hours, the flavors of the bones had thoroughly infused into the sauerkraut.

Shen Yunfang first poured some hot water from the thermos to wash her hands before sitting next to the stove. She took out a steaming big bun from the space and started eating it with gusto along with the sauerkraut from the pot.

A bite of pork intestine, a bite of pig heart—if only there was some chili oil, it would have been perfect. After finishing the bun, Shen Yunfang was sweating profusely; it was truly satisfying!

Several months had passed since she had traveled back in time, and this meal was the tastiest and most satisfying one she had had so far.

After feeding herself until she was full, she took out a plate and transferred the remaining sauerkraut and bones from the pot. She needed to use the pot now.

She had picked out the items from the outside, but she wouldn’t dare to use them without giving them a good wash and disinfecting them first.

Moreover, it was winter, and the water drawn from the well in the backyard was bitterly cold, so she had to heat some water before she could use it.

To speed up the process, Shen Yunfang used the stoves of both rooms: one for heating water in a basin and the other for heating water in the pot. Then she started scrubbing away.

It was eleven at night by the time she had got these items cleaned up. She had only looked at their completeness when picking them, not considering their designs and materials.

So she ended up with a large steamer pot that was missing a base, likely used in a cafeteria. She assessed it and decided it would fit on her own large pot at home, where she normally could steam eight buns at once. If she mounted it over her pot, she could probably steam twenty-four buns at a time.

She also found a ladle which took a lot of effort to scrape clean; however, it had no handle, so she would have to make one and attach it if she wanted to use it.

There was also a brass hot pot, which she could save for later use, perhaps for a cozy hot pot meal.

What pleased Shen Yunfang the most was a thick iron plate, square and about fifty centimeters wide by forty centimeters long, with a thickness of nearly one centimeter. Once it was cleaned up, it could be placed directly on the stove to serve as a flat-surface pan.

Then there were several basins, each with varying degrees of bumps and dents on the bottom, but she had tested them, and they didn’t leak. Their only flaw was that they were made of aluminum; iron basins left outside for so many years were so rusted they couldn’t be cleaned.

Shen Yunfang knew that using aluminum products wasn’t good for health, as long-term use could lead to dementia, but using these basins to just wash vegetables should be fine. Alas, circumstances were tough—she’d make do for now and exchange them later when conditions were better.

She took two basins and filled them with clear water, then picked some bones to soak in them, planning to boil them the next day when she had time. She aimed to produce as much bone powder as possible before her departure.

After the shock and hard work of the day, Shen Yunfang slept soundly that night.

Possibly due to the biological clock she had developed over the past two months, she woke up early with nothing to do, even before dawn had broken.

Today was New Year’s Eve, the last day of the seventy-second year. Shen Yunfang was spending the New Year alone and didn’t bother with the usual customs.

In the morning, she made some rice porridge. After eating, she went back to the backyard to keep busy.
