Who Said A Necromancer Can't Be A Priest?-Chapter 87: Curses And Blessings
The morning began early for the students. A loud alarm blared, waking everyone up. They had one hour to themselves before they had to report for classes.
Although it was their hour, most of it was spent freshening up and breakfast. What little time that remained was spent walking to their classes.
However, the first day was special.
Instead of heading to the classes, the students once again were assembled in the auditorium. Guards were stationed outside and inside. Once again, they were greeted by the vice-headmaster.
"There was an incident in the town last night," he said. "Two people were found dead in an alleyway, with another person missing. In light of these events, the students are prohibited from venturing into the city without supervision."

He continued, "New rules will be implemented. No student is allowed outside their dorm rooms after sunset. Your food and other necessities will be provided within the rooms."
The rules didn't stop there. Suddenly, there were plans to have roll calls randomly through the night. If anyone failed to answer, the staff reserved the right to enter their chambers. If they weren't found inside, they'd be expelled with no hearing.
Similarly, if anyone was caught roaming around at night, they, too, would get expelled.
After saying his piece, the vice-headmaster stepped down and Seraphina took the stage. She then informed the students about the classification.
There were three houses in the academy.
Valor, Verity, and Vigilance.
Each house would be led by one of the three honors students who were selected yesterday. Each house also had a professor to oversee them.
Each professor had also selected their representative and by sheer luck, the one overseeing Verity, Aaran's class, was none other than Seraphina.
They were dismissed after being classified.

An hour later.
"You're late," Seraphina rebuked, looking at her wristwatch.
"My apologies, professor," Aaran replied. "I wasn't familiar with the building and got lost."
Classes began at eight am sharp. Aaran was late by a minute and Seraphina, who was taking the blessing and curse class, used that opportunity to teach Aaran a lesson.
That's what it seemed to the others, but in her mind, she was messing with Aaran. He knew it, but couldn't say a word. While they could act lovey-dovey after the academy hours, while inside, they were student and teacher, nothing more.
"Two points deducted from Verity class."
Students who were a part of the group gasped. The year had just begun, and they were already in the last place.
"Next time, be mindful of your time and surroundings," she scolded him, pointing at an empty seat.
Aaran nodded and sat down, and the lesson resumed.
Usually, the classes would start with introductions, but not in Medibi academy. The teachers didn't care to learn the names. What was the point when half of them wouldn't be there next year, and then the next, and the next?
Instead, if a student was capable, they would make a name for themselves. That's when the teachers would bother knowing them.
Seraphina wrote a single word on the floating board.
Curses.
Most students in the room were confused. Since the knowledge about demons was contained within the elites, it was natural not many in the classroom knew about curses caused by the demons.
Seraphina was there to correct it. Since the academy was established to prepare them to fight against the demons.
"What are curses?" Seraphina asked, placing the chalk down. "Can anyone tell me?"
A few hands shot up. Aaran wasn't one of them. Yet Seraphina picked him.
"Prince Runedral, mind sharing your knowledge with the class?"
Aaran sighed inwardly before getting up. By this point, he knew Seraphina was punishing him for sleeping with Eleanor. Well, there wasn't anything he could do to get her off his back, so he answered.
"It's a branch of magic used by dark mages and demons often causing misfortune, suffering, or permanent harm. Unlike simple hexes or jinxes, curses are long-lasting and sometimes irrevocable."
"Excellent, three points to Verity."
Seraphina smiled and turned to the board.
"The problem with curses is the lack of our knowledge on the subject," she said. "Demons excel in it, and so do some dark mages. Unfortunately, our society has long since hated dark mages."
She continued, "Hence, their knowledge regarding curses is a secret kept away from us. Thankfully, we're not helpless."
Seraphina drew a circle on the board before writing 'blessings' inside.
"Balance is nature's rule. For every good, evil exists, and vice versa. Similarly, to counter curses, we have blessings. For now, divinity is the only answer to counter curses. But sometimes, even that isn't enough."
The students latched onto every word that came out of Seraphina's mouth.
"How many of you have heard about a disease called Eternal Sleep?" she asked.
Once again, hands shot up. Most of them had heard about it. Some even had a few family members suffering from it. But they also knew there had been one case where a person woke up from Eternal Sleep.
While the identity of that person remained hidden, the identity of the one who cured the person wasn't. In fact, it was one reason Aaran was given admission to Medibi. But only the headmaster and a few others were aware of it.
"As you know, no known cure has been found to counter Eternal Sleep," Seraphina said, gesturing them to lower their hands. "Even Saintess Elena failed to cure Empress Marki. May her soul rest in peace."
The empress's death also was a point of contention between the two empires. No matter how well Runedral had tried to hide it, Emperor Marki had known their secret. Perhaps that was another reason the latter wanted Aaran dead.
Seraphina's voice brought Aaran out of his thoughts.
"That's why it is important for us to understand how these curses work," she said. "Since the time for introductory class is almost up, I'll leave you with an assignment. Prepare a page-long note on how you think we can counter curses. That's all for today."
As the bell rang, the student left the room, but as Aaran was walking past Seraphina, she stopped him.
"Prince Runedral, a word."
