Chapter 91: Chapter 91: The Awkward Daughter-in-Law Meets the Mother-in-Law

After five o’clock, Zion Fitzwilliam called to say he was downstairs at Zenith Corporation.

Elara Hale quickly grabbed her bag and ran out, seeing a car parked next to him, she curiously asked, "This car..."

Zion Fitzwilliam smiled, "I just got a bonus, so I bought a car for commuting."

Not having a car was too inconvenient. Sometimes he had to call a taxi to pick her up. He had long been thinking of finding an excuse to get himself a car.

Although it’s a low-end car, it drives smoothly enough, and the space is not cramped, so it’s sufficient for now.

Elara was a little amazed, walking around the car twice, and said happily, "This car is so fancy. I’ve seen Esther Carter’s stepmother driving one like this; it must be around two hundred thousand, right?"

After Esther Carter’s biological father infuriated her biological mother to death, he often went out looking for women. For those he was with a bit longer, he would gift them cars.

Elara still remembers Esther cursing her father: With that toxic nature of his, who knows how many green hats he’s worn. I damn wish he’d end up begging on the streets when he’s old, and if I pass by, I’d definitely throw him a couple of coins!

Thinking about Esther, a smile appeared in Elara’s eyes. She told Zion, "This car is really great, spacious and easy to drive. You have such good taste."

Otherwise, how could it possibly have driven Esther so crazy?

Zion pondered briefly, over twenty thousand counts as a fancy car to her?

Then he... as a small salesman, wasn’t it unreasonable to pay for it in full?

Thinking of this, he casually mentioned, "I bought it on a loan, paid a down payment of over seventy thousand, and the loan is for two years, with over seven thousand to pay each month." 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

Elara was taken aback, wondering why he was explaining this to her in such detail.

Could it be he was afraid she’d borrow the car?

That made sense too, considering the high fuel prices, and he’d worked hard to earn the down payment. Every month he needed to pay off so much; not wanting to take on additional expenses was quite normal.

Zion is a good person. She didn’t want to let any misunderstanding develop between them, so to put him at ease, she volunteered, "I don’t have a driver’s license."

Zion paused, frowning slightly, no driver’s license, what does that mean?

He tentatively suggested, "Maybe go and get one someday?"

That way, she can use the car whenever she needs it.

Elara quickly replied, "No, I don’t want to get one in the next two years."

Zion nodded with a smile on the surface but was calculating frantically inside, not wanting to get one for the next two years, could it be related to Mason Jacobs?

At the Jacobs Family, did she suffer an ordeal because of a car?

Zion instantly felt displeased, mentally making a heavy note against the Jacobs Family.

Someday, he must destroy the Jacobs’ investment in the automotive industry.

Since they were visiting Grandma Fitzwilliam, halfway there, Elara insisted Zion stop by a supermarket, even though Zion repeatedly emphasized he had already prepared everything. But Elara still went to buy several boxes of nutritional products.

She earnestly told Zion, "What you bought represents your affection. I really like Grandma Fitzwilliam, and she genuinely cares for me. I can’t use your gifts to fool her."

Zion touched his nose, "I understand."

In his view, as long as his grandma got to see her, she’d be delighted. As for the gifts, it wouldn’t make any difference since after falling seriously ill a few years ago, her food and drink were all taken care of by a dedicated nutritionist.

Only occasionally would she eat something else, like when she was meeting Elara, she would send the nutritionist away early so that her granddaughter-in-law wouldn’t think she was being pretentious about her health.

Elara had no idea about this; her upbringing made it impossible for her to visit an elder empty-handed.

They soon arrived at the old neighborhood where Grandma Fitzwilliam lived. The two of them, carrying large bags and small parcels, knocked on the door, but after waiting a while, no one came to answer.

Zion frowned, feeling something was off. With grandma’s personality, knowing Elara was coming, she would definitely have been waiting at the door early, ready to open it the moment the doorbell rang. There’s no way she wouldn’t come and open the door after it had rung for so long.

An ominous feeling flashed through his mind, and before he could react, the door was suddenly pulled open from the inside.

Grandma Fitzwilliam stood at the doorway, beaming, "Elara, you’re here, come in."

She subtly signaled Zion with her eyes while Elara wasn’t paying attention.

Zion paused, glanced inside, and seeing the figure inside, his body suddenly stiffened.

His mother was here.

Elara knew nothing of this. Grandma Fitzwilliam warmly took her hand and led her inside, and then she saw a woman in front of the coffee table and froze.

It was a woman who, at a glance, could evoke no thoughts in anyone. With tender skin, almost translucent, big almond-shaped eyes, a small nose, wearing cream-colored overalls, light pink T-shirt, looking all cute and lovely.

Elara was a bit curious about this woman’s identity. She glanced at Zion, wondering if she was his sister?

Lucy Taylor put down the cup in her hand, stood up, and looked Elara over, then spoke in a condescending tone, "Zion, is this your wife?"

Elara was taken aback; she heard a hint of unfriendly tone in the woman’s voice.

Zion subtly shielded Elara, "Mom, her name is Elara."

Mom?

Elara’s pupils dilated in shock, looking at the woman in surprise—she was Zion’s mother? Zion was already thirty, so she had to be at least over forty... She thought she was no more than twenty-five or twenty-six!

How incredibly well-maintained!

Lucy looked at Zion’s protective stance and felt displeased, snorted, "Secretly marrying someone outside without knowing what family background, you sure have guts, ’married and forgotten your mom’ does just describe you!"

Zion quickly apologized, "Mom, it’s my fault."

Lucy snorted softly, lifting a slim finger to point at Elara, "You, make me a cup of tea."

Elara was stunned for a moment, then nodded, "Oh, okay."

Damn it, this woman didn’t show her any kindness whatsoever, yet she couldn’t muster any dislike because of that beautiful face of hers.

Even thinking... beautiful women should be like this.

Is she naturally born to be a bootlicker?

She agreed readily, but Zion Fitzwilliam wasn’t having it. As she was about to turn to make tea, Zion grabbed her wrist and said in a deep voice, "I’ll go."

Elara wanted to say she’d go herself; being here so many times, she knew where the tea leaves and cups were. But before she had a chance to speak, Lucy Taylor crossed her arms and started sarcastically.

"What? Crippling it, huh? Can’t even make tea? You have hands and feet; how come you’re so useless? Elara, you’re not really going to let my son make tea for you, are you? My son has never gotten his fingers wet with tasks like this since he was little!"

Zion Fitzwilliam’s brows furrowed tightly, and his tone carried a hint of warning, "Mom, don’t make things difficult for her."

Lucy Taylor’s eyes widened, full of hurt, "What are you talking about? Zion, are you still my dear sweet baby? She’s my daughter-in-law; is it really asking too much to make me tea? Which eye of yours saw me bully her? This is an insult to my character; I’m going to tell your father!"

Zion Fitzwilliam felt his head was about to split; his mom is spoiled, being pampered by his dad to the point of doing whatever she wants, ruling the household, sticky and loves to make trouble over nothing. Even he just wants to stay far away from her, although his dad treats her like a treasure.

He simply pulled Elara along with him to make tea together.

Lucy Taylor saw him daring to defy her and slapped the table in anger, trying to demonstrate her imposing presence. But her soft, delicate hands, unaccustomed to work, hit the hard marble surface, causing tears to spring from her eyes in pain.

"Ah, ah, it hurts so much..."

Her beautiful black eyes were brimming with tears, on the verge of crying; she looked pitifully endearing.

Grandma Fitzwilliam finally couldn’t hold back and sighed, speaking up, "Lucy, Elara is different from other girls. Take it easy, don’t really chase her away, or your son will definitely turn on you."

If it weren’t for Elara, she really wouldn’t want to say such things to Lucy Taylor. But for Lucy Taylor, these words were already quite severe, as her mother-in-law had always been the most doting on her.

Yet now, for an outsider, she was being so harsh to her. Lucy Taylor’s eyes instantly turned even redder.

"Mom, has even you been bought off by her? Is there no place for me in this house anymore? Nobody loves me now, right?"

Grandma Fitzwilliam’s head also felt big.

She did indeed dote on Lucy Taylor the most in the past, not to mention, just those sweet words made her heart feel comfortable. But Elara is different from Lucy, she’s young, and Zion still hasn’t won over Elara!

Grandma Fitzwilliam hardened her heart, speaking severely to Lucy Taylor, "You’re almost fifty, and you’re jealous of a kid; where’s your dignity? Zion finding a suitable girl isn’t easy; do you have to split them up to be happy?"

Lucy Taylor was extremely aggrieved, "They’re married, not even telling me as his mother. With the Fitzwilliam family being so big, he hid it without a trace; why do I have to treat that woman nicely? Who’s pampering me?"

"Doesn’t your husband pamper you?" Grandma Fitzwilliam glanced at her, "Think about how old your precious son already is. Let me tell you, Elara isn’t a girl who’ll take injustice lying down. If you dare to act up against her, in a few days, she’ll turn away and leave; a marriage certificate won’t keep her!"

Lucy Taylor’s mouth dropped open, "But we’re the Fitzwilliam Family."

Grandma Fitzwilliam eyed her, "Is the Fitzwilliam Family so capable? So noble? And let me tell you, their hidden marriage was my idea. Zion’s marriage doesn’t need to be accounted to the family, understand what I mean."

Lucy Taylor’s previously bright face slightly drooped upon hearing Grandma Fitzwilliam’s last sentence; her spirits dropped, and she said rather dejectedly, "I understand, Mom."

Zion Fitzwilliam carried over the freshly made tea, placing it before her.

Lucy Taylor glanced at Elara, who was being guarded and protected behind Zion, pouting; oh dear, she’s worked so hard raising her son, and he’s never protected her like this.

But she has a husband, and her husband will protect her like this.

Thinking of this, Lucy Taylor felt balanced, but she still didn’t want to show Elara a good face.

In her eyes, Elara was a bad woman seducing her son, not even daring to tell her own mother about the marriage; could an ordinary woman do such a thing?

Who knows how much bad she’s up to, this Elara.

Elara felt nothing about Lucy Taylor’s attitude toward her, because to her, Lucy Taylor’s face was simply an invisible lethal weapon, truly so beautiful.

Even when being sarcastic, still so beautiful.

And also... she indeed had no need to care; after all, Lucy Taylor was only a temporary fake mother-in-law, not a real one.

Grandma Fitzwilliam went into the kitchen to cook, while Lucy Taylor stood at the kitchen door watching for a while, then turned her head to look at Elara, maliciously saying, "Hey, are you so disrespectful as a junior? Let Grandma cook, and you’re even bold enough to sit around waiting to eat? Big-face!"

Grandma Fitzwilliam raised her head to look at her, unceremoniously countered, "I remember, after you’ve been married into the Fitzwilliam Family for thirty years, it seems you’ve never set foot in the kitchen? There was a time when the family chef had to leave temporarily, and you stared wide-eyed at me all afternoon, then cried to me that you’re hungry and begged for a bowl of noodles, and it had to be authentic Shanxi belt noodles or you wouldn’t eat."

Lucy Taylor immediately felt guilty, daring not to give Elara a hard time anymore, quietly ran to sit down on the sofa.

Elara looked at Zion Fitzwilliam amused, whispering, "Auntie is so adorable."

Zion Fitzwilliam was helpless, "She’s just like that, like a child all day, very simple-minded. My dad spoils her, turning her into this, while she has no bad intentions, she’s really spoiled. Don’t take her seriously."

Elara shook her head, laughed, "I really think she’s incredibly cute, just like a little dog I used to raise, both proud and bootlicking."

Zion Fitzwilliam couldn’t help but laugh, pausing for a moment, he said, "Rest assured, with me here, she wouldn’t dare to really do anything to you."

Elara wasn’t afraid of Lucy Taylor, but hearing Zion Fitzwilliam’s promise still warmed her heart.

Actually, she thought Lucy Taylor was far better than Kylie Dalton, and in the Jacobs Family facing Kylie, there wasn’t a single person willing to speak up for her.

Now, not only Zion Fitzwilliam was right by her side protecting her relentlessly, but Grandma Fitzwilliam also warned Lucy Taylor; she actually felt particularly content.

It’s just a pity that all the relationships are fake; she can only have this moment.

After the third attempt to help in the kitchen was chased out by Grandma Fitzwilliam, Elara finally gave up. She glanced at Lucy Taylor lying on the table in boredom, hesitated for a moment, but decided against it, sitting a little further away from her.

Although she wanted to cozy up to a beauty, considering the beauty’s hostility toward her, she better keep her distance.

Though she sat quietly without attracting attention, Lucy Taylor came over, still in an impolite manner, "Elara, let me ask you, have you dated anyone before?"

Her question was straightforward, but Elara thought an extra layer; not only had she dated, but she’d also been married.

Although she didn’t think there’s anything shameful about it, facing Lucy Taylor, she somehow found it a bit hard to speak.

"I..." Just as she was about to lay everything out, Zion Fitzwilliam suddenly spoke up, his voice calm, "She’s dated, and she’s been married. Mom, I pursued her with great difficulty, do you have any complaints?"

Elara stared blankly up at him, who was just casually standing there, one hand in his pocket, appearing nonchalant as he looked at his mother, yet his attitude was extremely assertive.
