Who Cares About Him When I'm Married to the Richest Man?-Chapter 89: I Know You Fought for Me
Zoe Chase lowered her head and said softly, "Last week my mom was laid off by her company. We have a mortgage and car loan, so she went to deliver food. A few days ago, she broke her leg and is in the hospital now."
Elara was taken aback, "What about your dad?"
A look of sadness flashed across Zoe’s innocent face, "My dad and my mom divorced three years ago. When they divorced, he said not to look for him for the rest of our lives."
Elara felt a bit heartbroken for this girl. She had originally intended to inquire about Zoe’s family situation to see if she could contact an adult to take her back. But now it seemed, even if she was sent back, she had no adults to stand up for her at home.
It was just like Aidan Sommers said, not caring for her was like pushing her to a dead end.
But Zoe staying here wasn’t a solution either. As long as those people continued to bully her, she wouldn’t be able to study properly.
Elara thought for a moment and said, "Give me your mom’s contact info, and I’ll give her a call."
No matter what, she needed to inform the parents. She was just a stranger and had no right to intervene casually.
Upon hearing her words, Zoe immediately choked up and pleaded, "Sis, can you not tell my mom about this? She’s already working so hard, I don’t want her to worry about me."
The little girl’s tears kept falling. It was clear she was very scared, yet sensible enough not to want to trouble anyone. Seeing Elara remain silent, she jumped off the chair and bowed to everyone in the room.
She said, "Thank you, Sis, Uncle, Auntie, for letting me stay here this afternoon. I know it’s difficult for you, you don’t need to worry about me, I’m fine."
After speaking, she looked at Aidan Sommers and forced a smile, "Big Brother, thank you for helping me drive away the bad guys today. In my heart, you’re a big hero. I hope that when I grow up, I can be as awesome as you. Goodbye."
After saying that, she carried her backpack and walked out.
Aidan instinctively tried to grab her, "Wait a minute!"
Zoe stepped back and looked at him, trying hard to lift the corners of her mouth, "Big Brother, don’t worry about me, I’ll be fine. Next time they bully me, I’ll seek out a teacher or call the police."
Elara felt a mix of emotions inside. Seeking a teacher or calling the police would mean there’s no hiding this from her mom.
She knew Zoe was lying, trying to make Aidan feel less guilty.
At the tender age of seven or eight, this child was heartbreakingly sensible.
She couldn’t help but think of Jasmine from the orphanage, who had a similarly tough fate. But at least Zoe lived in a big city, had a mom, had a home.
She hesitated only for a moment, then said to Zoe, "If you’re willing, I can help you talk with the teachers at school to see if it makes a difference."
This child bore too much at such a young age, she couldn’t bear to see such a good kid being bullied.
Upon hearing her words, Zoe’s eyes, which had been numb, showed a glimmer of hope, but she still cautiously said, "Is that okay? If it’s too much trouble for you, then forget it."
Elara smiled, "It’s no trouble. You can stay here for the night, and tomorrow I’ll come to take you to school."
Zoe smiled brightly and agreed with a firm "Hmm."
Yvette Sommers saw how things were developing and immediately disagreed, frowning at Elara and scolding, "Elara, you’re being too reckless, shouldering all kinds of messy issues. Do you think those hooligans are easy to deal with? If something goes wrong, it will drag me and your dad down in the end!"
Aidan tried to say something but was silenced by a glare from Yvette, "You, shut up!"
She then turned to Elara, dissatisfied, "I asked you to help Aidan solve his problem, not help a stranger’s child you have nothing to do with! You think you’re kind and compassionate, but then what about Aidan? When he goes to school tomorrow, who knows what he’ll face!"
Elara said, "Auntie Yvette, please don’t rush. Let me talk to Aidan."
With that, she looked at Aidan, "Can you come to the bedroom with me for a moment?"
Aidan, for once, obliged, nodding, "Alright."
Yvette grumbled discontentedly, "What can’t you say in front of us? Don’t lead my son astray again!"
Elara ignored Yvette’s shouting, locked the bedroom door, and then looked at Aidan.
"You should know what you’ll face for helping Zoe."
Aidan appeared indifferent, sitting down in a chair and crossing his legs, "They call me Little Overlord at school, who can do anything to me? Anyway, you’re the one taking over for her now; they won’t give me any trouble."
But she... Aidan’s eyes flashed with something unusual, as if he wanted to say something, but in the end, swallowed it back.
Elara looked at him, "I called you in to tell you not to get involved with Zoe’s affairs anymore. Focus on your studies and stop getting involved with those messy people."
Aidan scoffed, "Need you even say? I’d gladly ditch that trouble, now that you’ve taken over, I’m free as a bird. Only an idiot would court trouble willingly."
Elara nodded calmly, well accustomed to Aidan’s devil-may-care attitude.
Seeing she had nothing more to say, Aidan stood up and headed for the door, grabbing a cigarette and sticking it in his mouth. As his hand touched the doorknob, he heard Elara’s quiet voice, "You don’t need to put on such an indifferent front in front of me. I know what kind of person you really are. I know about the fight you got into for my sake."
Aidan’s hand froze.
Elara looked at his back and said softly, "By armoring yourself with prickles, you not only hurt those who bully you but also those closest to you. I hope you can find a different way to live. At the very least, don’t pretend you don’t care about anything."
Aidan didn’t turn around, retorting sarcastically, "What the hell do you know, lecturing me."
He opened the door and left.
Elara chuckled bitterly, sighing softly.
Half a year ago, when her marriage with Mason Jacobs was at its ugliest, somehow, these matters spread to school. Everyone said she was a vicious mistress, refusing to let go of Mason, preventing two truly in-love people from being together.
She heard it by chance, learning just how awful the rumors about her were.
Greedy, sleeping her way to the top, despicable, lacking grace...
During that time, Aidan got into a lot of trouble at school, coming home almost every day with bruises. Asked at home, he would get impatient, and Yvette cried and asked her to look into it, afraid their precious son was being bullied outside.
Elara went to the school, just in time to see Aidan single-handedly taking on six people, leaving them battered and bruised, stepping on one’s face, furiously yelling, "Elara is my sister, and anyone messing with her has me to deal with! Dare spread more slander, and I’ll destroy you! Get lost!"
The thugs fled in disarray.
It was then that she realized, this stepbrother who had never shown her a good face, was secretly protecting her like this.
From then on, she changed her view of Aidan Sommers. Gradually, she discovered that Aidan wasn’t inherently bad; it was just that Yvette Sommers was too controlling. He didn’t know how to rebel, and coupled with being bullied at school due to a single-parent background, he grew up to be what he is now.
This was also why she was willing to help Aidan Sommers repeatedly. It had nothing to do with Yvette Sommers; she purely didn’t want to see Aidan go down the wrong path.
Elara Hale sighed again, knowing that a thick ice doesn’t form in a single day, she couldn’t hope for Aidan to become a normal child overnight.
Pushing open the bedroom door and stepping out, she saw Aidan storm out, slamming the door behind him, while Yvette Sommers cursed angrily, and David Hales sighed beside them.
Zoe Chase stood nearby, anxious and uneasy.
Elara knew that she couldn’t leave Zoe Chase here today.
She went forward and said to her father, "Dad, you should rest early. I’ll take Zoe home."
David Hales worriedly said, "Can you take care of her by yourself? Why not let her stay here? I’m free anyway, and it would be convenient to cook for her and everything."
Elara glanced at Yvette, who seemed ready to explode, and with a smile, declined, "No need, I’m taking a leave tomorrow anyway, I’ll take care of her."
She left with Zoe. On the way, she called Zion Fitzwilliam. She felt a little embarrassed and had planned to take Zoe to a hotel for the night if Zion wasn’t willing.
Unexpectedly, Zion agreed without any hesitation, "No problem, you two stay as long as you want."
Elara breathed a sigh of relief, feeling even more that Zion Fitzwilliam was truly kind-hearted.
Little did she know that at this moment, on the other end of the phone, the man was expressionlessly handling some company matters. Once finished, he closed the computer, pondering: Since she brought a little girl back, I suppose she won’t be thinking about moving out anytime soon?
Elara soon returned with Zoe Chase.
As soon as they entered, Zion paused for a moment upon seeing Zoe and then smiled, "You’re back? Have you had dinner?"
Elara waved her hand, "We didn’t have time to eat, I’ll order takeout."
She could go hungry, but she couldn’t let the child go hungry.
Zion said, "No need to order takeout, I’ll whip something up quickly."
Zoe obediently went into the bedroom to do her homework, so Elara went into the kitchen to help with the meal.
She briefly told Zion about Zoe’s situation while they cooked.
Upon hearing the girl’s name, Zion’s eyes flickered momentarily but he quickly regained his composure.
After finishing the meal, Elara called Zoe to come out and eat. After eating, she helped Zoe freshen up and go to bed.
Meanwhile, Zion watched their busy figures, discreetly took out his phone, opened a file, and looked at the photo for a while.
Then he got up, walked into his bedroom, locked the door, and made a call to Assistant Harris.
"Chris Chase’s ex-wife and daughter met with an accident, it should be Ivy Jenkins who had it done, the breakthrough for Chris has been found, contact the lawyer to visit the detention center and meet Chris."
Assistant Harris was utterly stunned, "Ivy Jenkins should have been threatening Chris with the safety of his wife and daughter to make him take the blame for her, why would she harm them?"
Zion sneered, "Relying on Chris being locked up in there, he knows nothing about the outside world. That woman is not to be underestimated, keep a close watch, see if you can find any clues related to the incident three years ago."
"Understood," Assistant Harris replied solemnly.
Zion hung up the phone, stood by the window, his expression cold and deep.
This war without smoke had begun long ago, he hoped Elara wasn’t dragged into it.
If things went smoothly, perhaps he could even give her a pleasant surprise.
Three days later, at the detention center.
Chris Chase looked pale; after listening to the lawyer, he covered his face and cried.
"I thought... if I listened to her, she’d protect my wife and daughter... that deceitful woman, she fooled me so much... promising to take good care of my wife and daughter in exchange for taking the blame, while secretly harming them... such a cruel heart!"
The lawyer, sitting across from him, spoke at an appropriate moment, "Mr. Chase, if you want to seek a lighter sentence, you could provide more clues about Ivy Jenkins’ illegal activities to the police. You’re already in custody, and your ex-wife and daughter suffer because of you; compromising won’t protect them."
Chris looked up blankly, tears streaming down his face, his lips trembled for a moment before his eyes turned resolute, "I want to report Ivy Jenkins and her brother’s collusion..."
After a long time, the lawyer stood up to shake his hand, "Mr. Chase, I understand your requests, I’ll prepare and file an appeal for you in a few days."
Chris seemed to breathe a sigh of relief, slowly nodding and waving his hand.
The lawyer left the police bureau, sat back in his car, and forwarded the recorded information from the recent conversation.
Then made a call, his voice respectful, "Assistant Harris, I already sent you Chris Chase’s testimony, but the matter President Fitzwilliam cares about is difficult to handle; he has testimony but no evidence, we can’t find a breakthrough unless we target Ivy Jenkins and destabilize her mentally, maybe there’s still a chance."
However, the current problem is that they can’t get close to Ivy Jenkins, making it hard to implement this approach.
Assistant Harris pondered, "I’ll consult with President Fitzwilliam about this."
The lawyer hurriedly replied, "Alright, please contact me if you need anything."
Meanwhile, not long after Chris was taken back in, Ivy Jenkins was brought to the interrogation room.
An hour later, she stumbled out, looking dazed, and numbly returned to her cell.
Less than ten minutes later, a sudden scream was heard from the cell, followed by a female prison guard rushing out, "Something’s wrong, Ivy Jenkins attempted suicide!"
The duty police officers quickly ran in to check, only to find Ivy lying on the ground, clutching a sharp nail clipper stained with blood.
Her neck had a large cut from the nail clipper, blood was gushing out in a jet, she wasn’t completely dead yet, her chest gently heaving, eyes wide open, caught in a trance, looking terrified yet numb at something non-existent.
It would be better if she died, dead, no one would ever find out about her brother.
No one could ever learn of that incident; only death could forever keep that secret.
The prison guard quickly called for an ambulance, while others brought bandages to stop the bleeding, the ambulance arrived quickly, and Ivy was taken to the hospital for treatment.
