Chapter 72: Chapter 72: Even a Dog of the Fitzwilliam Family Is More Noble Than a Member of the Warner Family

Zayne Warner opened the invitation with suspicion, and with just one glance, all the color drained from his face!

It was the Fitzwilliam Matriarch, the one he painstakingly invited!

What pretentious words did he just utter in front of the Fitzwilliam Matriarch?

Zayne Warner was terrified, "Dad, could this affect the Warner Family..."

Walter Warner replied irritably, "You better hope not! If the Fitzwilliam Matriarch holds you accountable, you’ll have to explain to your grandfather yourself!"

Zayne Warner’s face turned ashen. The Fitzwilliam Matriarch was someone whose mere stomp could make all of Northgarde tremble. If she truly pursued his offense, would his grandfather spare him?

Walter Warner seemed to remember something and frowned as he looked at him, "Do you know the girl beside the Fitzwilliam Matriarch earlier?"

Zayne Warner nodded, "She was my junior in college. We collaborated in a club once."

"Her face looks unfamiliar, is she from a wealthy family abroad?" Walter Warner asked.

Zayne Warner quickly shook his head, "No, her family is just ordinary, from Northgarde."

Walter Warner couldn’t understand, "How can an ordinary woman be beside the Fitzwilliam Matriarch? And the Fitzwilliam Matriarch doesn’t reveal her identity in front of that woman—is she trying to climb into a wealthy family?"

Zayne Warner was also baffled. He couldn’t even imagine Elara Hale knowing the Fitzwilliam Matriarch, which was why he was rude earlier. Because she was standing with Elara Hale, he instinctively thought Elara Hale couldn’t possibly know someone of high status—how could he have guessed he’d hit such a hard wall?

Walter Warner said sternly, "No matter the case, for that woman to get close to the Fitzwilliam Matriarch, she must have some skills. You should find an opportunity to apologize to her later and maintain good relations. If the Fitzwilliam Matriarch holds you accountable in the future, it might be beneficial to have an assistant."

Zayne Warner reluctantly said, "Dad, she’s not truly from a wealthy family. Hanging around the Fitzwilliam Matriarch, she’s just a dog kept by the Matriarch..."

"Even if she’s a dog, she’s still the Fitzwilliam’s dog, far more noble than anyone from the Warner Family!" Walter Warner scoffed at him. "Get rid of whatever nonsense you’re thinking and do as I say!"

Zayne Warner had no choice but to agree, "I understand."

The father and son carried on greeting guests as if nothing had happened.

Not far away, Rosalind Jacobs and Haylie Sommers, who had witnessed the entire scene, were equally puzzled.

Initially, they felt schadenfreude when they saw Elara Hale being blocked out by Zayne Warner, thinking how dare someone without status or background attempted to bluff at an upscale event.

They thought about going up to mock her a bit, but unexpectedly, within seconds, the situation changed drastically—Elara Hale and that old lady were escorted in respectfully by Walter Warner?

Not just them—even if Rosalind’s brother or Haylie’s dad came in person, they couldn’t command such respect and courtesy from Walter Warner.

What kind of spell did Elara Hale cast on the Warners?

Haylie Sommers suspiciously said, "Could that woman have used some kind of charm on Warner?"

Rosalind Jacobs sneered, "With her? Warner is still single; he’d be blind to fancy someone who’s been married twice. Wait, she just divorced my brother and remarried, to divorce again to be with Warner—that would be her third marriage. It’s impossible!"

Haylie Sommers also found that unlikely and felt a bit relieved. Holding Rosalind’s arm, she said, "Let’s go and ask."

They walked up to the entrance, and Zayne Warner greeted them politely. Haylie Sommers casually moved closer to him, wearing a pure, dignified smile, "Warner, aren’t you tired from welcoming guests today?"

Zayne Warner replied stiffly, "It’s manageable."

Haylie Sommers felt a bit frustrated. She had been eyeing Zayne Warner for a long time—his family background and character made him the perfect candidate for the Sommers Family to climb another rung.

Her blind date with Zara Dalton was casting a wide net; it was Zayne Warner she was serious about.

Unfortunately, Zayne Warner was as dull as a block of wood and entirely lacked romantic understanding. She used all her tricks, yet could never succeed in winning him over.

Haylie Sommers intentionally moved very close; she’d used a new perfume today, its subtle fragrance charming and refreshing, "Warner, was that person who just went in Elara Hale?"

Zayne Warner frowned and took a step back, "Move away, it’s too overpowering."

Haylie Sommers almost lost her composed smile. If any other man said this today, she would flip and slap first, talk later!

But with Zayne Warner, she dared not and could only retreat with a meek appearance, looking thoroughly wronged.

Only then did Zayne Warner ask, "Do you know Elara Hale?"

Haylie Sommers laughed softly, "Well, she’s a friend of a friend, not very close. But I heard her family is ordinary; did you have special contacts to let her in?"

Zayne Warner shook his head, "No."

Haylie Sommers puzzledly asked, "Then how did she get in?"

Zayne Warner didn’t dare mention the Fitzwilliam Matriarch, just said, "She has an invitation."

Rosalind Jacobs was taken aback upon hearing this, exclaiming, "What? Where did Elara Hale get the invitation?"

It’s the Warner Family’s banquet invitation! There were only a hundred issued in all of Northgarde—even her brother struggled to get her one!

As did Haylie Sommers, pleading with everyone possible to obtain just one invitation. Families like theirs were not top-tier but much better than ordinary families—they wanted and could get one.

Many others wanted the invitation but couldn’t even find the right connections.

And now, Zayne Warner was telling them Elara Hale had an invitation? Where did she get it?

Rosalind Jacobs’s outburst attracted the attention of nearby guests, displeasing Walter Warner, who frowned and signaled Zayne Warner to promptly escort the two inside.

Standing at the entrance made the Warner Family lose face.

Zayne Warner looked at Rosalind Jacobs, saying, "I don’t know where her invitation came from. Miss Jacobs, Miss Sommers, please head inside, more guests are coming."

Rosalind Jacobs and Haylie Sommers proceeded, reluctantly, into the venue.

Yet, they remained concerned about Elara Hale possessing an invitation, though searching the banquet several times yielded no sight of her, forcing them to temporarily let it go.

Meanwhile, hiding in a corner with Grandma Fitzwilliam nibbling on little cakes unaware of being watched, was Elara Hale.

She hadn’t had breakfast, was already hungry, and the Warner Family’s cakes were both fragrant and beautiful, too tempting to resist, so she quietly asked Grandma Fitzwilliam, "Have you had breakfast?"

Grandma Fitzwilliam actually had, but seeing her state understood, smiling, "No, I haven’t. How about we have some?"

Thus, one older and one younger, they avoided the crowd, nestled in a corner, silently munching cakes, then nuts, followed by juice.

Mason Jacobs walked around the corner, and saw this scene unfold.
