Chapter 40: Chapter 40: Letting Go Completely

Watching Elara Hale drink that glass of wine as though facing death, a sudden agitation rose within Mason Jacobs, as if something very important was quietly drifting away from him.

He chuckled inwardly, thinking he was overthinking. Just Elara Hale, what’s the big deal? Besides, there’s nothing to worry about concerning this wine; it was just Rosalind who added some truth-telling water in advance.

He only wanted to clear up the origin of those two video clips and was worried Elara Hale might not tell the truth, which is why he tacitly approved Rosalind to tamper with the wine, not intending to actually do anything to Elara Hale.

Elara Hale finished drinking the wine in a few gulps.

She turned the wine glass upside down, shook it, looked at Mason Jacobs, and asked, "Are you satisfied now? Will my father... will he be safe from now on?"

Mason Jacobs took out a pack of cigarettes, drew one out with his fingers, then picked up the lighter and lit it. He took a puff and then spoke, "Those two videos you played in court, where did you get them?"

Elara Hale answered truthfully, "I don’t know."

Mason Jacobs sneered, taking a hard draw from the cigarette, blowing the smoke in her face, watching her cough in distress, his gaze cold, without a trace of former affection.

He said icily, "Elara Hale, at this point, stop playing games with me. Tell me where those videos came from and I’ll let you guys go. Otherwise, not only your father, but not even you and I will be spared."

Elara Hale shook her head, "I truly don’t know where those two videos came from."

She only knew those videos were brought out by Brandon White, who had been kind to her, so she couldn’t betray him for her father.

So she insisted that she knew nothing.

Mason Jacobs’ expression was icy as he stared her down, "Elara Hale, I’m giving you one last chance."

Elara Hale’s spine stiffened; Mason Jacobs never joked, when he said last chance, it truly was the last.

If her answer remained the same, her father’s matter was bound to go awry.

She clenched her fingers, in an internal struggle, on one hand Brandon White who showed her kindness, on the other hand her aging, disabled father...

While she hesitated, Cecilia Quincy suddenly spoke up, "Elara, you should know, those two videos could cost Brother Mason his life. You shared love with Brother Mason after all, at this point don’t make things difficult for him, just tell him the origin of the videos!"

Cecilia Quincy looked gravely at Elara Hale, as though she was a villain guilty of heinous crimes.

Elara Hale’s lips moved, she looked fixedly at Mason Jacobs and pleaded softly, "Mason Jacobs, I truly don’t know about the videos, I’m just an ordinary person, how could I possibly get such videos? Spare my father, aside from the videos, anything I can do, I will promise you."

After a pause, she continued, "I can tell you the origin of the videos, someone found my lawyer and sent the videos to us, but who that person is, we don’t know, given they dare do such a thing, surely it was anonymous."

Mason Jacobs’ expression paused, he was suspicious, "Someone anonymously gave them to you? Who the hell wants to mess with me?"

Rosalind Jacobs, holding a glass of red wine, spoke loftily, "Brother, you believe whatever she says? Elara Hale is no easy character; I think she’s clearly lying, she surely has other evidence in her hands, just waiting to strike you with a fatal blow when you are down! You cannot be softhearted, you must kill her scheming in the cradle!"

Elara Hale quickly said, "Mason Jacobs, I don’t, I truly don’t have any evidence..."

She swallowed the bitterness in her heart and spoke urgently, "And you promised me, once I drank that wine you’d spare my father, you didn’t mention any other conditions before drinking..." 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

It had been a few minutes since she drank that wine, she now faintly felt her body heating up, realizing the effect of the wine was starting.

She estimated she probably couldn’t hold on for more than five minutes.

So she was eagerly pressing to confirm her father’s matter.

Mason Jacobs watched Elara Hale’s state, hesitation arose in his heart, Elara Hale drank truth-telling water, she should not be lying, could those videos truly have nothing to do with her?

But the leverage held by others always made him uneasy.

He looked at Elara Hale, flicked the ash from his cigarette, "Here’s the deal, you find out who gave you the video, tell me, and I’ll spare you."

Elara Hale’s eyes were red all over; her disappointment in Mason Jacobs reached a peak.

So, he really never intended to keep his word, saying drinking that wine would spare her father was just a lie!

The heat in her body was rising, her legs already weakening; she dared not stay here any longer, with both men and women in the room, staying longer, who knows what might happen!

Since Mason Jacobs was toying with her from the start, then she... might as well let it be.

Elara Hale looked at Mason Jacobs; with her eyes already somewhat fixed due to the drug’s effect, she felt so sad and desperate, but in Mason Jacobs’ eyes it appeared like a twinge of unrequited pain.

He irritably frowned, instinctively snapped, "Elara Hale, don’t look at me like that, I haven’t loved you in a long time, it’s downright disgusting!"

Elara Hale seemed not to have heard him, speaking slowly, one word at a time, "Mason Jacobs, from today onward, I owe you nothing."

At this point, she laughed softly, lowered her head, tears falling, "Three years ago, you showed up in my most desperate time, I considered you my savior; these three years, I’ve been good to you; originally thought your change of heart meant I’d give you freedom, afterward we could at least remain friends, but it seems I only got to know you today."

"You... are no longer the person I loved three years ago."

"As for my father’s matter, let it be, your Jacobs Family has power and influence, I can’t afford to provoke, but can always hide... Whether my father and I live or die in future, it’s our fate."

"Mason Jacobs, goodbye."

She stumbled out of the private room before losing control of her body.

Like a farewell, this should have been the farewell on the divorce day, but back then Mason Jacobs and Cecilia Quincy pressed her step by step, she couldn’t get over it, how could she say goodbye calmly?

Yet today Mason Jacobs’ words made her heart suddenly burst open a corner; those warmth she once cherished and kept deep inside finally collapsed completely.

For the first time, she felt so utterly and vividly that this man was no longer the one she loved back then.

From today onwards, she would harbor no fantasy whatsoever about Mason Jacobs.

Elara Hale wiped the tears from the corner of her eyes and left silently.

Meanwhile, in the private room, Mason Jacobs had his brows furrowed tightly, since Elara Hale’s departure, he remained in this position, unmoving for quite a while.

Even as the cigarette ash burned his fingers, he showed no sign of reaction.
