Chapter 23: Chapter 23: Keeping an Appointment

Elara left the cafe and returned to the company, working overtime until nine in the evening before heading back.

Upon entering, she saw Zion Fitzwilliam sitting on the couch in loungewear, with a silver-gray laptop on his lap, seemingly handling work.

Hearing the noise, he lifted his head, looking deeply at Elara, "Back already?"

"Yeah," Elara replied while changing her shoes, "Did some overtime."

Zion’s eyebrows twitched slightly, always knew she worked hard, but didn’t expect such dedication.

After a pause, he asked, "Have you eaten?"

"Not yet." Elara opened the fridge and checked; the wet noodles and bean sprouts she bought were still there, so she took them out, planning to cook some vegetable noodles, casually asking Zion, "Do you want some? The noodles I make are quite tasty."

A flash of amusement crossed Zion’s eyes, and he nodded, "Then make me a bowl too."

He could feel that after the lawsuit incident, Elara was more at ease interacting with him.

This is a good beginning.

Elara responded with a cheerful "Sure" and went into the kitchen, thinking that this was pretty nice — even though Zion was a man, his sexual orientation was the same as hers, and he was a good person, making him an ideal roommate.

She even started considering introducing him to Zara Dalton and Esther Carter after the marriage ended, adding another close friend to their circle.

In a short time, the noodles were ready; Elara served two bowls and brought them out. Zion took a bite and praised graciously, "They’re indeed delicious."

Elara felt a bit proud, "It’s my mom’s secret recipe, and I learned it perfectly. It’s just a pity there aren’t many ingredients today. Next time, I’ll cook you an authentic meal that’s a hundred times better."

As Zion watched her smiling face, his eyes flickered. Her smile was genuine and contagious, even prompting his lips to curl up as he replied with a deep murmur, "Okay."

They unconsciously began planning for "later" together.

After dinner, Zion usually did the dishes, and once he finished, he found Elara sitting on the couch, frowning at her phone. He walked over, casually asked, "Facing some trouble?"

Elara shook her head, forcing a faint smile, "Not really."

Zion nodded, refraining from saying more.

Elara sat for a while before heading back to her room, sighing lightly as she looked at her phone messages.

It was from Auntie Yvette, saying that Aidan hadn’t returned since he ran out yesterday, and the family couldn’t reach him.

Elara wasn’t worried about anything happening to Aidan; to her, Aidan, being eighteen, should be responsible for his actions. As long as he wasn’t foolish, he wouldn’t be stirring up trouble at times like this.

Her concern was that with Aidan’s persistent issues, Auntie Yvette might not be able to take care of her father.

After much hesitation, she replied to Auntie Yvette, "I’ll try to contact him."

Exiting the chat interface, she found Aidan’s number and dialed it.

No answer, so she dialed again.

And again. She didn’t know which attempt finally connected, but when it did, Aidan’s voice was irritable, "Can’t you stop? So annoying! Why are you calling me?"

Elara’s voice was calm, "Auntie Yvette is worried sick looking for you. If you’re okay, give her a..."

Before she could say "call," Aidan hung up.

Elara sent Auntie Yvette a message, "Contacted him; he’s fine."

Almost instantly, Yvette Sommers called, "Elara, you reached him? Where is he?"

Elara spoke honestly, "Just exchanged a few words before he hung up, but he seemed fine."

Upon hearing this, Yvette Sommers immediately angry, but constrained herself, needing Elara’s help, so she held back and said, "Honestly, why didn’t you ask where he was? He doesn’t have much money on him; where will he stay tonight? Is he eating well? You are his sister, aren’t you supposed to think of these things?"

Elara was speechless for a moment, deciding to say nothing, letting it go in one ear and out the other.

Yvette Sommers gradually calmed down too, realizing Aidan simply didn’t want to answer the phone, not that anything bad happened. With relief, she finished venting and said to Elara, "Alright, hang up. If Aidan calls you again, ask if he needs money, and send some if needed."

Elara agreed, "Okay."

Hanging up, she took out her notebook, organized the day’s work contents, and then went to bed.

The next day after work, she met Zara Dalton at the entrance of Myst-TF Bar.

Zara wore a high-fashion designer outfit, a smoke-gray embroidered shirt with matching loose embroidered pants, casually standing in front of a silver-gray sports car, whistling at her, "Hey, beauty, over here!"

The women who had been sneakily admiring him immediately appeared downcast upon seeing Elara, sighing as they left.

Elara glared at him, "Using me as a shield again."

Zara shrugged helplessly, "What can I do? I’m just too charming."

Elara gave him a speechless look in return.

Zara, however, grew serious and asked, "What’s going on? Who are you meeting today that you need a bodyguard beforehand?"

Elara explained the situation with Aidan, and Zara disagreed, "I think there’s no need for you to involve yourself. That kid doesn’t even appreciate you; why care about his well-being?"

Elara shook her head, "I’m doing it for my dad."

Zara knew about her family situation and sighed, saying no more.

While speaking, they arrived at suite 106’s door.

Zara hesitated, "Are you okay going in alone? Should I just go in with you?"

Elara hurriedly refused, "No, if they really just want to talk, bringing you would make me seem guarded. Wait outside, and if anything goes wrong, call the police immediately."

Zara had no choice but to agree.

Elara took a deep breath and knocked on the suite door.
