Who Cares About Him When I'm Married to the Richest Man?-Chapter 199: She’s My Sister
Haylie Sommers sneered sarcastically, "Oh, Rosalind Jacobs, you’ve got someone playing your Flower Protector, huh? Where’d you find such a shabby guy? Well, my dad did say that as atonement you can’t marry into a wealthy family, so you’ll just have to pick randomly."
Connor stood in front of Rosalind Jacobs, frowned unpleasantly, and said, "Miss, I don’t know her. I just can’t stand seeing so many people bullying her alone, please stop talking nonsense!"
Haylie Sommers covered her mouth and laughed quietly, with a mocking tone, "Thought he was a Flower Protector, yet he doesn’t even admit it, that’s hilarious. Rosalind Jacobs, even someone like him isn’t interested in you!"
Rosalind Jacobs, exasperated, shoved Connor aside, "Get away!"
Haylie Sommers mocked, "Hey handsome, she doesn’t want you. Hurry up and come to me, I’ll take you in!"
Connor looked at her, displeased, and said, "Please don’t joke like that."
"Oh, even I don’t meet your standards?" Haylie Sommers laughed, "What a thing, picking and choosing, I think you’re a perfect match for that Rosalind Jacobs bitch, wishing you an eternal love hahaha."
Haylie Sommers twisted her body and left.
Connor quickly looked at Rosalind Jacobs, concerned, "Miss Jacobs, are you alright?"
Rosalind Jacobs frowned, "You know me?"
Connor shook his head, awkwardly smiled, "I heard that woman call you Rosalind Jacobs, I took the liberty to call you Miss Jacobs, I apologize."
After pausing, he exclaimed, "Rosalind, graceful like a startled swan, elegant like a camellia, it suits you, such an impressive name, just like you."
Originally a bit impatient, Rosalind Jacobs warmed up because everyone appreciates compliments. She said, "Thanks for stepping in earlier, even though it didn’t really help, it was nice to have some support."
Connor bent down to pick up the scattered items on the ground and shook his head at her words, asking, "Are you sure you’re okay? It seemed like that collision wasn’t light, shall I take you to the hospital for a check-up?"
Rosalind Jacobs laughed, "You’re really odd, it’s just a bump, why make a fuss about going to the hospital? A doctor wouldn’t bother with such a small matter."
Connor hesitated, "Then how about exchanging contacts? If you feel uncomfortable later, you can reach me anytime. I’m on vacation at the moment, so I’m free."
Rosalind Jacobs felt strange about this encounter. She used to have no shortage of suitors; those small families looking to cozy up to the Jacobs all had eligible young men buzzing around like bees, endlessly annoying.
But ever since Haylie Sommers’s incident, her reputation in the circle had tanked and those previously eager men now avoided her like the plague. If she wanted male company, she’d have to venture to a high-end escort club.
This was the first man in months to show interest in her voluntarily.
So, even though he seemed unremarkable, Rosalind Jacobs didn’t refuse his request and took out her phone to scan his QR code.
After all, he looked clean, was tall and handsome, that was enough for her.
Just as they finished adding each other as friends, Jean Dunn approached, grabbed Connor, and asked worriedly, "Are you okay?"
Connor subtly pulled his arm back from her grip and smiled, shaking his head, "I’m fine, what could be wrong?"
Jean Dunn didn’t notice his deliberately detached attitude, being worried about his safety she had almost called the police. Fortunately, those people left quickly, now the danger was gone, and she couldn’t help but reproach,
"You’re too reckless, people here are either rich or influential, what if you offend someone important, what then? You’ve already lost your job..."
Before she could finish, Connor interrupted her, frowning with slight annoyance, "Jean, I’m a man, when I see injustice, should I just turtle? If I can’t even protect a woman, who would dare follow me?"
His words aimed to distance himself from Jean and convey to Rosalind Jacobs that he was single.
But to Jean Dunn, his actions appeared to be for her, to better protect her, thus dissipating her anger. Fearing he’d be upset, she explained timidly, "I was just worried about you."
Rosalind Jacobs, intrigued by their interaction, asked Connor, "What’s your relationship with her?"
Her expression had soured slightly; Connor’s response suggested he and this girl were just friends, but the girl’s reaction seemed more like that of a girlfriend.
So... this guy has a girlfriend yet he’s hitting on her, using her for amusement?
Especially after Owen Grayson had already toyed with her, this was unacceptable.
She stared intently at Connor, determined to teach him a lesson about whom not to mess with, if he dared play her.
Jean Dunn heard this and smiled, explaining, "I am his..."
Before she could finish, Connor interjected, "Sister, she’s my sister."
Jean Dunn looked at him in surprise.
Connor ignored her, merely smiled at Rosalind Jacobs, saying, "Miss Jacobs, it was nice meeting you today, but I’m out for a stroll with my sister, so I must excuse myself."
He handed the packages he was carrying over to Rosalind Jacobs.
Rosalind Jacobs took them, curved her lips, "Alright, goodbye."
Watching Connor and Jean Dunn’s figures fade away, she chuckled with interest, glancing at her newly added friend on her phone, before stowing it and leaving with her packages.
Meanwhile, as Jean Dunn walked away with Connor, she asked somewhat unhappily, "Why did you say I’m your sister? Do you have feelings for that woman? Connor, you can’t be Casimir! We’ve been dating for years!"
Connor quickly soothed her, "Jean, what silly talk, of course, I don’t like her!"
"Then why did you add her on WeChat?"
"She wanted to add me, if I, as a man, rejected her publicly, wouldn’t it be disrespectful? If the girl with thin skin were to do something drastic after being rejected, who would be responsible?"
"Then, why did you say I’m your sister?" Jean Dunn felt a bit wronged, her eyes almost welling up, "We’ve been together for six years, since I was a freshman. I had an abortion for you, suffered so much, my parents disapprove of us, but I insisted, I’ve given you all my money, yet you won’t even acknowledge me as your girlfriend in front of others? Connor, what do you take me for?"
Tears choked her voice by the end.
The words Vera Ford and Elara Hale said to her, she hadn’t ignored them, but what could she do? She loved this man, he was her first love, she had given him everything.
Yet he wouldn’t even acknowledge her as his girlfriend.
"It’s hard to believe you have no ulterior motives!" Jean Dunn finally burst into tears.
Seeing this, Connor frantically tried to console her, "Don’t cry, Jean, you know I can’t bear to see your tears, it hurts my heart, don’t cry, I swear, I truly have no other thoughts, I just wanted to get you away quickly and avoid being entangled by that woman. You saw, she likes me, if I claimed you as my girlfriend, what if she harassed you? Judging by the things she bought, you can tell she’s no ordinary person, what if she harms you?"
He pulled Jean Dunn into his embrace, his heart aching, "You are my whole world. I don’t want you to get hurt at all. Anyway, that woman is just a passing acquaintance to us. Why should we care what she thinks of our relationship? As long as we can leave quickly, it’s fine, right?"
Jean sobbed, looking a bit pitiful, and asked hesitantly, "Really?"
Connor sighed, gently stroking her hair, "Of course it’s true. Be good, don’t get upset. There’s a baby in your belly, you know. If you’re upset, he’ll be mad at me."
Jean blushed, "Then you, then you delete that woman’s WeChat."
"Okay, I’ll delete it." Connor smiled helplessly, took out his phone, and deleted the friend right in front of her.
Only then did Jean smile.
She has a simple personality, and her temper flares up and dissipates quickly. Before long, she was chatting and laughing again, and Connor accompanied her, talking and laughing as they walked, and when Jean wasn’t paying attention, he added the friend back.
He noted Miss Jacobs as "HR from X Company."
He then nonchalantly put away the phone.
Elara Hale knew nothing about the Jacobs Family, nor was she interested. After breaking up with Mason Jacobs, she returned to work at the company.
Jean still didn’t come in the morning, Elara looked at the date, it had been five days.
Jean had mentioned being pregnant that day and took three days off to rest.
But three days had passed, and she still hadn’t come.
Elara didn’t want to add pressure on her, because she was pregnant too, and understood the emotional fluctuations during pregnancy, so she took the initiative to give Jean an additional three-day leave.
And now, there was only one day left of the six-day holiday.
She didn’t insist on Jean returning to work like a horse or a cow, but was a bit worried about her condition, especially since her boyfriend always seemed unreliable.
Evidently, Vera Ford had the same concerns.
During lunch break, Vera slid her chair over to Elara’s desk and asked, "Elara, do you have any plans after work today? I want to visit Jean at her place. I just feel uneasy, worried something might have happened to her."
Elara glanced at her schedule on the calendar and nodded, "I’ll go with you."
She messaged Zion Fitzwilliam, asking him to take care of Joanne Carter in the evening, mentioning she’d be back later.
Zion quickly replied, "Where are you going?"
Afraid she might be annoyed, he added, "Not monitoring you, just concerned."
Elara’s lips involuntarily curled up as she replied, "Visiting a colleague with an older colleague from the office."
Zion took a while, then replied with a simple, "Okay."
It was soon time to leave work, and Vera had already arranged with Jean. The two took a cab to Jean’s place.
Originally, they thought Jean was recuperating at her own home, with her parents taking care of her. Surprisingly, she was actually in a rented apartment with her boyfriend.
When they arrived, Jean was cooking in the kitchen. Vera was shocked, "Since when could you cook?"
She remembered when Jean first joined the company, she used to complain about how her mom always said she couldn’t do anything, even cutting potatoes could result in her cutting herself.
This was... less than two years ago, right?
Jean smiled upon hearing this, "I learned after moving in with Connor. He doesn’t have the knack for cooking. At first, he tried cooking for me, but it turned out disastrous, even worse than mine. Later, I slowly learned from online videos and got the hang of it. Cooking isn’t hard at all; I just never had the chance to learn before."
Vera hesitated, then finally couldn’t hold back, "You used to have your parents taking care of you, treating you like a little princess, no need to cook for yourself."
Her parents doted on her for over twenty years, and now she’s cooking just for a man.
It’s truly distressing. Vera, as an outsider, found it hard to accept. Imagine how heartbroken her parents would be if they knew.
Jean smiled, "What’s the big deal? I’m so independent now, handling most things at home. That saying is true, leaving one’s parents is the start of growing up. I’ve grown a lot now. I used to not even know how to manage a bedspread set."
Listening to the pride in her voice, Vera sighed and said no more.
Elara was observing this small rental apartment.
It was in an old neighborhood with small housing. It had only one bedroom, one living room, and one bathroom.
The kitchen was a simple setup in the living room with a table, using an induction cooker with no vent hood.
After hesitating, she advised, "You’re pregnant. It’s best to avoid smelling cooking fumes. They’re actually better avoided in general, as they contain carcinogens."
Jean didn’t mind, smiling as she replied, "Connor said since I haven’t had much of an appetite lately, the smell of cooking can help open up my appetite."
At this point, Elara didn’t know what to say.
Often, she would see reflections of her past self in Jean. Perhaps that’s why she was so concerned, as Jean was almost repeating her own old path.
Jean brought out the dishes, handing them chopsticks, "Try my cooking today, don’t be shy, feel free."
Vera took a bite with the chopsticks, a bit surprised, "The flavor’s quite nice."
Jean smiled proudly, "Right? Connor loves my cooking."
"Isn’t he off work yet?" Vera asked casually.
Jean sighed, "He was laid off by his company a few days ago. You know, the general environment hasn’t been great. He’s been trying hard to find a new job and went for an interview today."
After saying this, she sighed again, expressing worries, "He’s honestly under a lot of pressure. After I got pregnant, he wanted me to quit my job to focus on the pregnancy, saying it’s too taxing for my health. But without his job, and planning to marry by year’s end, plus his grandfather being critically ill, it’s really financially taxing. I’ve even thought about borrowing from my parents."
Elara almost immediately interjected, "Don’t quit your job."
Jean gave a bitter smile, "I’d love not to, but how can I quit when he hasn’t found a job? If I really quit, we’d be out in the cold."
