Who Cares About Him When I'm Married to the Richest Man?-Chapter 167: Meeting the Parents
The police were very efficient. After questioning Elara Hale, they turned to Mason Jacobs. When they heard the two were already divorced, the expression on the police officer’s face became indescribable. Looking at Mason Jacobs, the officer said, "Comrade, even though you were once married, she’s remarried now. It’s inappropriate for you to persist like this."
This policeman was quite young, and having just been married not long ago, he despised Mason Jacobs’ behavior—if he really likes her that much, what was he doing earlier? Now that they’re divorced and she’s moved on, he’s coming back to pester her—what’s that, if not degrading?
But as a people’s policeman, he couldn’t say that directly—just offer some guidance.
In front of the officer, Mason Jacobs softened his stance, politely saying, "I’m sorry; I didn’t recognize the boundaries and even made the police come out specifically for our matter, wasting police resources and your time."
The officer saw his attitude was good in admitting his mistake, waved his hand, and said, "As long as you understand in your heart, that’s fine. Also, stop pestering her here. Take away your sports car and flowers. She has a new family now, and we shouldn’t be doing such unethical things. Isn’t that right?"
Mason Jacobs politely replied, "You’re right."
The officer waved Elara Hale to go upstairs first as they watched Mason Jacobs call someone to remove the sports car before they left.
Mason Jacobs stood in the plaza outside the CBD, his face dark. He had been watching Elara Hale the whole time, and she didn’t have time to call the police.
Who reported it?
He recalled the receptionist who looked excited upon seeing the police. His face darkened even more. Special Assistant Wood approached him and asked awkwardly, "President Jacobs, what should we do with this sports car?"
The red Bugatti sports car was temporarily placed outside the company. The surrounding flowers were romantic and extravagant, attracting the attention of many passersby.
Mason Jacobs withdrew his gaze from the car and said coldly, "Contact the 4S shop and return it."
Special Assistant Wood was not surprised; the Jacobs Group’s cash flow was not abundant lately, and this sports car cost nearly forty million, not a small sum for Mason Jacobs now.
As Special Assistant Wood was about to handle it, Mason Jacobs stopped him again, "Investigate the background of the receptionist of this company and get back to me as soon as possible."
Special Assistant Wood was a bit surprised but wisely asked no more questions. He nodded and went to handle it as instructed. Mason Jacobs turned to glance at the company and then left without lingering.
Shortly after Mason Jacobs and Special Assistant Wood left, a black Rolls-Royce quietly stopped by the roadside. Miles Morgan made a call to get the results, then respectfully reported to the man in the back seat, "The police have already sent him away."
Zion Fitzwilliam showed no emotion on his face and responded simply, "Let’s go."
Miles Morgan couldn’t quite discern his thoughts. He remembered the senior Assistant Harris’s earnest advice [No matter what, never make decisions for President Fitzwilliam, and when unsure, ask more questions. Never do things that could backfire], and he hesitated before speaking, "President Fitzwilliam, should we inform the Grayson Family?"
Zion Fitzwilliam lifted his eyes and smirked, "No need."
Just a clown jumping on the stage, not worth the effort.
He had thought that by creating trouble for the Jacobs Group, he could make Mason Jacobs behave. Who knew Mason Jacobs could still find time to pester Elara despite his own troubles? Creating more trouble for the Jacobs Family might not deter Mason Jacobs either.
Moreover, intervening too often might arouse Mason Jacobs’ suspicion, leading to gain less than what one bargained for. Tracks of those matters were hard to cover, and if Mason Jacobs became cautious and cleaned up the traces further, all previous efforts would be in vain.
Instead, it would be better to let him clearly see how the woman he once disdained now disdains him.
When the time is right, he will naturally help Elara reclaim everything.
"Keep a close eye on things, and report immediately if anything happens."
Miles Morgan nodded, "Yes."
He hesitated for a moment and added, "The old madam just called, saying she can arrive by five in the evening... She said the place you’re living in is small, and she just bought a 140-square-meter house in the city center. It’s not far from Miss Hale’s workplace and quite convenient. She says it’s a gift for you tonight."
Zion Fitzwilliam’s brow twitched, "Tell her I don’t need it..."
He paused and sighed, "Never mind, I’ll call her myself."
Miles Morgan hesitantly continued, "President Fitzwilliam, the old madam said you must accept this gift, whether you want it or not. The last time she tried to send a gift to her granddaughter-in-law, it was returned. After thinking it over, she felt gifting a house was the best. It’s not big, just over twenty million. To her, that’s nothing, and she has plenty of reasons. You’re married to Miss Hale, and it’s not decent if nothing comes from the man’s family side. Let this house temporarily make up for it, and the rest can be discussed later."
This was the nicer version; the old madam’s original words were: He’s living in such a tiny place, with a child, and if they ever have another child, what then? Even if they don’t have a child, it’s not enough for pets. And if they quarrel, will he have to sleep in the living room in front of the child? What’s that like!
Zion Fitzwilliam rubbed his phone, unsure whether he was convinced or thinking of something else, but he didn’t end up calling the old madam.
After a brief thought, he sent Elara Hale a message on WeChat, "Try to leave work early tonight? I’ll come to pick you up. Grandma has prepared a surprise for us."
When Elara Hale received the message, Vera and Jean Dunn were holding her back, eagerly asking what happened downstairs.
"Hold on, let me reply to this first," Elara Hale smiled as she pleaded, then replied to Zion Fitzwilliam, "Okay."
She looked at the two in front of her, amused and helpless, "I’ll tell you, I’ll confess, but you both need to be prepared."
Vera and Jean Dunn confidently declared, "We’re ready."
The most sensational guess was that the president of the Jacobs Group was pursuing a small firm employee. The news was enough to set one’s heart aflutter.
They couldn’t wait to hear Elara Hale’s love story with the big CEO.
Maybe it was love at first sight, the relentless pursuit by a domineering president, followed by an engagement, dealing with rivals, fighting off wicked in-laws, then finally becoming lovers.
Isn’t that how TV shows portray it?
Vera and Jean Dunn blinked eagerly, waiting for Elara Hale’s next words.
Elara Hale felt her hair stand on end from their gazes. She coughed and said the first sentence, "Mason Jacobs is my ex-husband."
Vera: ?
Jean Dunn: ?
Under their shocked gazes, Elara Hale calmly said the second sentence, "I’m remarried now; my husband is an insurance salesman working at Aethel."
Vera, who had been eagerly helping Elara find matches: ???!!!
Jean Dunn, who just realized the truth about the repentant CEO and the broken-hearted pure flower CP: ???!!!
At this moment, there’s an eerie silence.
Elara Hale feels a bit embarrassed, "Sorry, I didn’t mean to hide it from you; I just never found the right moment to say it."
Vera waves her hand, still processing the information she just received, "No worries, knowing you’ve found happiness, I won’t fuss over it anymore."
Jean Dunn snaps out of her shock and curiously asks, "Elara, were you and President Jacobs in a love marriage? Why did you get a divorce?"
Vera tugs at her, and Jean quickly comes to her senses, hurriedly saying, "Sorry, I’m just nosy. If it’s inconvenient to answer, just ignore me."
Elara Hale shakes her head, "There’s nothing I can’t say. We had a love marriage, it was a marriage above my class, and we divorced because his first love returned. I caught them in bed at a hotel. Since we conducted a prenuptial agreement, I left with nothing."
Jean Dunn widens her eyes, "Oh my God, Jacobs seemed decent, but who knew he’d do something so disgusting!"
Vera glances at her with a cold smile, "You think every wealthy person is a good catch, huh? A man with money and looks, could he be genuine? You need to be cautious when you get married in the future, don’t get swept away by love, giving everything in a heat of the moment. Elara is your cautionary tale, got it?"
Vera speaks frankly, and Elara Hale understands her temperament; she knows it’s for Jean Dunn’s good, so she doesn’t take it to heart. She’s more than willing to be a cautionary example, nodding in agreement, "That’s right, Vera is right. In love, you can be sincere, but never lose yourself."
Jean Dunn touches her nose, "I understand."
She’s been with her boyfriend since university; it’s been three or four years now, and they’re planning to marry next year. However, her boyfriend is from a small town, with a poor family background. His parents divorced when he was young, and he was raised by his grandfather. Not only can they not support him in buying a house or car, but they also have to care for his grandparents, and he has a younger brother too.
If Jean Dunn stays with him, it’s obvious how much pressure there will be.
Since knowing about her boyfriend’s situation, Vera has been trying to persuade her to reconsider marriage. Unlike him, she’s a local from Northgarde, an only child. Though her family isn’t very wealthy, they live comfortably; her parents have already gotten her a small apartment and a modest car.
Actually, Elara Hale isn’t optimistic about Jean Dunn and her boyfriend’s relationship, not just because of the economic disparity but also because Jean Dunn complained to her before. Her boyfriend sends home half of his income every month. Jean Dunn feels they should save for their wedding, but her boyfriend just assumes her family already prepared the house and car, so there’s no need to save, and it’s better to help his grandparents and brother live better.
You can’t say her boyfriend is wrong, but Jean Dunn and her boyfriend clearly aren’t from the same social class, and Elara Hale isn’t optimistic about such cross-class marriages. She herself is a bloody example.
But after all, it’s someone else’s business. As an outsider, it’s hard to say too much. All she can do is remind Jean Dunn from time to time, just like Vera does.
Vera looks at Jean Dunn, sighing inwardly. Although she and Elara Hale often mention it, it’s obvious Jean Dunn hasn’t truly listened.
Everyone has their own fate. They, as outsiders, can’t force anything.
Seeing the atmosphere cool down because of her, Jean Dunn quickly changes the subject, "Elara, if we get the chance, invite your husband out so we can have a meal together."
Elara Hale smiles and agrees, "Sure, I’ll bring your boyfriend and Vera’s husband too, so we can all gather together."
Vera also smiles and nods, "Alright."
The topic ends there, and the three return to the office to continue working.
When the workday ends, Elara Hale receives a call from Zion Fitzwilliam, his voice gentle, "Are you done with work? I’m downstairs at your company."
Elara Hale quickly says, "I’m coming down right now."
Vera and Jean Dunn wink at her, "Husband picks you up, huh?"
Elara Hale smiles and explains, "We have to go to his grandma’s tonight."
"Go on, go," Vera and Jean Dunn wave their hands, "It’s not easy to get along with in-laws, good luck to you!"
Elara Hale actually doesn’t mind it too much. Mainly because Grandma Fitzwilliam is a very easygoing person, even if she doesn’t really appreciate Lucy Taylor, her words and actions have no ill intentions, and her emotions are displayed on her face. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺
Elara Hale really likes Zion Fitzwilliam’s family.
Now that their relationship has progressed, tonight’s meeting is particularly meaningful for her. In the past, meeting Zion Fitzwilliam’s family was just a task, but now... barring any surprises, they are likely the family she’ll be with for the next few decades.
With a hint of nervousness, she goes downstairs to meet Zion Fitzwilliam.
Zion Fitzwilliam stands by the car, smiles, and hands her a bag as she approaches. Elara Hale takes it, opens it, and sees a sandwich and a carton of milk inside.
She asks puzzled, "Aren’t we going to Grandma Fitzwilliam’s? Why give me this?"
Zion Fitzwilliam spreads his hands helplessly, "As you know, my family is very eager for my marriage. Now that the news is out, everyone at home knows, so... you might see quite a few people tonight."
He only found out in the afternoon that his grandma had already spread the marriage news to the family. Tonight’s dinner wouldn’t just have his grandma and mom, but also his long unseen dad, along with the family of his uncle and second uncle.
Considering the family power struggles, his relationship with his uncle and second uncle wasn’t the best. Zion Fitzwilliam didn’t know why his grandma wanted to invite them too.
He initially didn’t want to take Elara Hale, but his grandma insisted, giving a strict order. Having been raised by his grandma, in the Fitzwilliam family, she commanded the utmost respect from him, even more than his parents.
So when his grandma asked, he had to agree, but with one condition, which was that the uncle and second uncle shouldn’t speak out of turn. He couldn’t let his carefully planned pursuit of love be disrupted.
"With a big crowd, you might not eat well, so it’s better to fill up a bit first." He explained.
To Elara Hale’s ears, the words carried a different meaning.
Previously, their marriage was a business deal; except for Grandma Fitzwilliam, she’d only met his mother, and that too by accident.
Now, just yesterday, they broke that veneer, deciding on a long-term marriage, and today he gathered all his family for her to meet.
Doesn’t that mean... he does value her?
A bit of happiness fills her heart, but more so a sense of trepidation.
This is what meeting the parents feels like.
