Who Cares About Him When I'm Married to the Richest Man?-Chapter 121: Trouble at the Company
She had already thought it over, everything was for her father, Yvette Sommers wasn’t her family, she didn’t need to care about Yvette’s attitude.
After thanking Aidan, she and Zion sat down. The food on the table was simple, two stir-fried vegetables, buns in a plastic basket, and a bowl of porridge for each person.
Elara didn’t feel like eating, she looked at David Hales and asked, "Dad, how have you been feeling lately?"
David Hales knew his daughter always worried about his life, he quickly said, "Pretty good, Auntie Yvette takes great care of me, and Aidan has become sensible recently, even helping me to the bathroom..."
Yvette interrupted impatiently, "We’re eating, why talk about this? Don’t you think it’s disgusting!"
In fact, she found the whole thing disgusting. Her son, whom she raised like a treasure, was actually helping a half-paralyzed old man to the bathroom, the thought of it made her want to puke.
Yet recently, Aidan seemed to be taking some strange medicine, ignoring everything she said.
She could only sulk inwardly.
David Hales glared at her, didn’t say anything in front of his daughter and son-in-law. Aidan becoming sensible was a good thing; only Yvette couldn’t distinguish right from wrong.
After dinner, Elara pushed her father into the bedroom, while Zion stayed in the living room.
Aidan sat at the desk but had no intention of doing homework. He sneakily glanced at Zion several times, then hurriedly looked away when Zion glanced back.
Yvette cleaned up and came out, saw Zion sitting in the living room, didn’t even offer him a cup of water, and sarcastically asked, "Little Fitzwilliam can’t be used to our ordinary tea, right? After all, you bought a house in the city center, an award-winning one at that."
Although Zion was handsome and charming, Yvette couldn’t bring herself to like him, just found him irritating. If it weren’t for this man, she would have married Elara off to the admissions director, and Aidan’s college entry would be secure, no need to work hard studying.
Without Elara around, Zion’s good nature faded. He raised his eyes to look at Yvette, his gaze cold and indifferent, but the warning was unmistakable.
Yvette was startled by his sudden cold demeanor, "You..." She wanted to say something to bolster herself, but Zion’s indifferent glance stuck her words in her throat, leaving her speechless.
Damn it, that man’s gaze, seemed like he could strangle her in the next second.
Yvette feigned indifference, turned into the bedroom, patted her chest to calm her racing heart.
This man couldn’t be a murderer, could he?
But on second thought, if he was, that’d be good. Elara marrying such a man, she’d suffer, deserved it! For not following her arrangement and finding a man on her own!
In the living room, Aidan had naturally sensed Zion’s formidable aura too, and though he usually dabbles aimlessly, this man did instill some fear.
But he hesitated for a long time, finally mustered the courage, looked at Zion, and asked, "Are you good to her?"
Zion raised an eyebrow, crossed his legs where he sat, slightly surprised by Aidan’s question.
He had noticed Aidan’s occasional glances at him, but they didn’t seem malicious, so he initially ignored them.
Unexpectedly, Aidan spoke up and asked such a question.
"I guess," he began, his voice deep, "you’re referring to your sister, Elara, right?"
Aidan pursed his lips, stubbornly refused to acknowledge the sister remark, but continued, "She’s easygoing, generous, kind-hearted and pure, but don’t mistake that for weakness and being easy to bully, and don’t assume because of the situation with my mother that she has no family backing, don’t underestimate her, understand?"
Zion looked at him in slight surprise.
The young boy’s face was serious, with a slightly immature expression, but trying hard to seem tough not easily bullied, which made Zion smile involuntarily.
"What are you laughing at?" Aidan asked, confused.
"Nothing," Zion stood up, walked to him, and his tall figure instantly overshadowed Aidan’s attempt to build up his bravado, told Aidan, "Don’t worry, even if the whole world betrays her, I’ll still stand by her side. Since I married her, I’ve promised to shelter her for life."
Aidan looked at him incredulously, not expecting this seemingly enigmatic and attractive man to be so passionate, but hearing this promise, he relaxed, reminding him, "Make sure to keep your word, treat her well, she’s really a good person."
Zion chuckled, "I know."
Elara’s goodness didn’t need anyone to tell him. He remembered her kind nature for over a decade.
Only regretted coming too late, regretted not being able to protect her earlier.
In the bedroom, Elara told David Hales about Dr. Chambers, David was initially excited, "Really? Such a great doctor treating me, is there hope for a cure?"
But then looked at Elara worriedly, "Elara, how did you manage to invite such a good doctor? Did you have to pull a lot of strings? It’s all on me, giving you so much trouble, how can I repay this favor?"
Elara smiled, comforted him, "Dad, it’s no big trouble, Zion happened to have a friend who’s a doctor, met Dr. Chambers at a forum, Dr. Chambers appreciates him, so connected us. Zion and I will invite his friend for a meal as thanks."
David Hales was relieved hearing this, nodded, "Zion has a good heart."
That mysterious and powerful son-in-law, Elara couldn’t see through him, but David sensed something amiss.
But last time, Zion assured him firmly, promised to take good care of Elara and never let her get hurt, and since Elara liked him, David could only watch and wait.
Since Zion got them the connection, getting such a good doctor made sense.
David still admonished, "Actually, whether my leg gets treated or not doesn’t matter, don’t keep asking Zion for help, too many requests and he’ll find it annoying."
Like back at the Jacobs, wasn’t it because Elara worried too much about him that caused the Jacobs’ displeasure?
He hoped his daughter would be happy, didn’t want to be a burden.
But Elara smiled and said, "Dad, I didn’t ask, I didn’t know his friend knew Dr. Chambers, Zion helped on his own, I just found out, the appointment is already set." 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢
David widened his eyes, "He willingly helped?"
That man didn’t seem like a very enthusiastic person. David only wished that he would treat his daughter well, didn’t expect him to be considerate of his disability too.
David’s impression of Zion was refreshed again, felt this young man admirable, though not verbose, his actions were genuine.
Unlike Mason, all talk and no help when needed.
The comparison made David have only appreciation left for Zion.
After discussing the Saturday appointment, Elara hesitated but mentioned, "Dad, I have some money now, a few million, if I bring you to live with us, it’s very doable, I can support you completely if you’re willing..."
Since having money, she pondered on this for a while. Previously, she opted for Yvette out of necessity, but now she could afford the best caregiver and didn’t need to endure Yvette’s grievances anymore.
Her father’s house was at stake; she could give Yvette some money and undoubtedly persuade her to leave.
Her current job was already on track, and barring any surprises, she would be promoted by the end of the year. She managed her work with ease and handled everything effortlessly.
Unexpectedly, David Hales waved his hand and outright rejected, saying, "Forget it. Your Auntie Yvette and I are doing just fine. Just like that, as you get older, you always need a companion: if it’s not her, it would be someone else. Besides, Aidan is mature now; as your dad, I feel it’s okay this way."
His daughter had her own life. She and her husband were getting along well. If he were to be a burden, who knows what her husband might think.
David Hales held Elara’s hand, advising, "Keep your money securely. There’s a long life ahead and plenty of places where money will be needed. As for Zion, you need to observe him more. Though he’s good now, men can change; no one can guarantee what will happen in the future. Keep this money for yourself as a backup. But live honestly with others and don’t bully them, understood?"
Elara felt like crying, but she held back tears and nodded.
A father’s love is as solid as a mountain; how could she not feel it?
Her father was saying it on purpose, for her sake. He had spent half a lifetime with her gentle mother, and even their arguments were few.
How could he ever get used to living with Yvette Sommers?
But she couldn’t persuade her father, so she had to temporarily put the matter aside.
Thinking the matter was unsolvable, she hadn’t expected Zion Fitzwilliam to respectfully say to David Hales when they were about to leave, "Dad, if you’re willing, you can come and live with us more often; Elara only has you as a relative now, and she worries about you."
Elara was surprised he said this and, feeling touched, she looked at her father with some expectation.
Her father’s main worry was affecting her and Zion. Now that Zion had proactively mentioned not minding him, would he...
But although David Hales was visibly moved, he still shook his head to decline, "No need, I’m fine staying here."
Elara felt a bit disappointed, and Zion said, "It’s okay, whenever you change your mind, you’re always welcome."
David Hales waved with a smile, "Alright, I’m content knowing you care. It’s late, you two should head back."
Elara bid farewell to her father and turned to head downstairs with Zion Fitzwilliam.
Once in the car, she curiously asked, "You invited my dad over, but your house is a two-bedroom one. If he agreed, where were you planning to have him stay?"
She wasn’t doubting Zion’s sincerity, just purely curious.
Unexpectedly, Zion responded, "If he comes, we’ll just get a bigger house."
He said it so casually like changing houses was as simple as drinking water.
Elara was stunned, "I thought you’d say rent a place. Changing houses? In Northgarde, buying a bigger house costs a lot of money."
Selling the smaller one, plus her savings, might not even be enough.
Zion, eyes on the road, responded, "I have some savings. I’ll get some more from home, and add the proceeds from the house sale. It should be about right for a three-bedroom house in the same area."
Elara held her breath for a moment, unsure of what to say.
She was incredulous and shocked; he mentioned these things so casually, without considering the pros and cons at all.
Even people in affectionate relationships would calculate gains and losses before marriage. But he didn’t at all; upon hearing her doubts, he naturally offered a solution, which was to his utmost capacity.
He didn’t see anything wrong about spending over a million for her dad to change houses.
Such genuine openness.
Elara was filled with complex emotions, wanting to say many things but swallowing them back. Finally, she just said, "Zion, you’re too kind."
So kind that he would empty his savings for a nominal marriage wife.
Without even thinking, if they divorced, these would be marital assets she could easily claim half of.
He truly hadn’t the slightest defense against people; no wonder Attorney White hurt him so deeply.
Kind?
Zion raised an eyebrow slightly. Was he really a kind person?
If you asked his subordinates at the company, the answer would certainly be no.
If you asked his competitors in the business field, they’d even call him a demon king.
If you asked his family’s elders and siblings, he’d probably be considered a heartless block of ice.
His wife seemed to have a big misunderstanding of him.
But so what, his wife complimented him for being kind.
Maybe because he’s given all his humanity to her.
Zion simply smiled without speaking, and Elara was deeply moved.
Living like this wasn’t bad; Elara started to like the life of a nominal marriage. At least, she didn’t need to be on guard around the people beside her.
The next morning, as usual, Zion Fitzwilliam dropped off Joanne Carter and then drove Elara to work. By noon, Elara had become well-known in the company.
Downstairs in the building, someone had unfurled a banner, accusing Elara of being a disgrace. Written in large letters on the wide white cloth, it detailed how unfaithful Elara was, how she cuckolded her ex-husband, and how she married on the same day of divorce for a pretty boy.
People passing by saw the banner, whispering to each other. When Elara went down, she saw two unfamiliar men she didn’t recognize vividly describing to the onlookers how depraved and excessive she was.
She stopped at the back of the crowd. Among the onlookers were her colleagues and strangers, some who recognized her animatedly whispered to those beside them.
Many indecent words reached her ears without any filter.
The two strangers, seeing Elara arrive, grew excited and pointed at her, saying, "Look, it’s her. Just doesn’t look like someone proper. You all know she’s made a lot of money this past half year, right? Of course, your colleagues would know. Let me tell you, the money she made was from spreading her legs. Tsk, you get it?"
The pointing gazes around them intensified.
Elara looked at the two strangers, taking a deep breath.
She didn’t recognize them, yet inside she knew this was the Jacobs Family’s doing.
Mason Jacobs wouldn’t do something so disgraceful, and Kylie Dalton would care about face; she wouldn’t air family scandals. Was it Cecilia Quincy, or Rosalind Jacobs?
