When the Wind is Sweet: The Fairy Tale of Mr. and Mrs. Lancaster-Chapter 510: Uncle Lane Talks About the Past
"That, I don’t know. We didn’t meet when he was leaving; it’s said that Mr. Lancaster took leave before the car accident."
"We all thought at the time, if Gable hadn’t taken leave, maybe the accident wouldn’t have happened." Uncle Lane muttered, sighing softly, "But alas, there are no ’ifs’ in life."
"Why do you say that?" Faye Turner asked anxiously, feeling she might uncover something. "Not taking leave means no accident?"
"At least that’s what everyone believes, because Gable was a calm person. Before driving, he would always walk around the car, checking the surroundings, and regularly inspected the car’s performance."
"Uncle Lane, do you know... why on the day of the accident, Mr. Lancaster didn’t call for another driver? When he went to meet a client, was he alone? Didn’t even bring an assistant?" Faye had too many questions.
Uncle Lane seemed to sense something and slowed down, glancing at her, "Miss Turner, why did you suddenly bring up things from twenty years ago?"
Uncle Lane thought to himself, she was only a few years old back then, right?
"No, I just learned that Adrian’s father had the accident, which led to all this, so... I’m a bit curious." Faye answered openly, still considering Victor Peterson as his father.
Uncle Lane nodded finally.
"Uncle Lane, do you know much about the accident?" Faye couldn’t help but ask since the conversation had reached this point.
Uncle Lane shook his head, his memory drifting back to that turbulent fall—
"I don’t know much, to be honest. Our colleagues only found out through the news, and for the better part of the following year, President Lancaster didn’t come to work; the old man took charge of the company personally, and the atmosphere was very somber throughout."
So, when he reappeared in the public eye, it was Victor Peterson, and this secret nobody knew.
Faye’s mind suddenly conjured another thought. What kind of deal was it at the time? Why would it cost a life?
"Adrian’s father... did he usually drive?" Faye asked again.
"President Lancaster could drive," Uncle Lane mentioned the accident, feeling incredulous. "Actually... later, some speculated whether the car had been tampered with, because given the weather and road conditions at the time, such a catastrophic accident was extremely unlikely."
Faye’s instincts were sharp, she turned to him, "Uncle Lane, did people discuss this at the time? Wasn’t there an investigation?"
"After the boss’s accident, there were all sorts of theories. Where there are people, there are rumors," Uncle Lane said, "There was probably an investigation, but nothing was found."
Faye’s conversation with Uncle Lane didn’t yield many useful clues.
The car unknowingly drove into the Lancaster Family’s old, rustic residence and parked in the courtyard.
Grandpa happened to be out; according to the butler, the old man had agreed to play chess with a war buddy.
But Eliza Hayes was home.
"Madam, Miss has returned." A servant came to the backyard and delivered the news to Eliza Hayes, who received it joyfully.
She hurried to stop her work and stepped out to greet.
Faye Turner, with her rounded belly, carrying a bag, walked towards the backyard. "Mom!"
"Faye! Do you have news about Caleb?" Eliza Hayes asked with a smile, quickening her step and lowering her voice.
Not so soon, though?
But she could understand her mother-in-law’s urgency; he was the one she loved and cared for the most.
"Quick, come in and sit." Eliza Hayes led Faye into the living room, then dismissed all the servants, leaving only Nanny Warren.
Nanny Warren brought a pot of tea and a beautifully arranged fruit platter. 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎
"Tell me, Faye, is there any news?" Eliza Hayes pinned all her hopes on her.
