When the Side Character Gets a System and Travels through Difference Worlds-Chapter 128: Yi Ru 12
Yi Ru understood what Tan You was implying. She clenched her fists. "Youzi, I get the feeling you don’t have much faith in me."
"You’re overthinking it," Tan You said flatly. "That’s your life. It has nothing to do with me."
"So cold," Yi Ru said, half-joking. "You’re a good person, and your intentions are pure, but you’re so stingy with your emotions. What kind of person would ever make you want to settle down?"
"I won’t," Tan You replied without hesitation. "I will never stop or settle down for any man. They bring nothing but misfortune and trouble to my life. Other than that, they’re utterly useless."
"But you’re always alone. Don’t you ever get lonely?" Just thinking about Tan You’s solitary existence made Yi Ru feel a pang of loneliness for her.
"I can process those emotions on my own," Tan You said with a smile. "In fact, I don’t even spend much time with you. I keep my schedule completely full. Even if I do feel a little lonely on occasion, I can always get myself back on track quickly."
"Besides, I never make decisions when I’m feeling down, because decisions made in that state usually lead to regret."
Yi Ru was silent for a long time. "I may be much older than you, but I’m only now realizing that you’re far more level-headed than I am when it comes to life."
"I’ve told you before, I’m older than your great-grandmother," Tan You said hauntingly, her voice thick with playful mockery.
"Oh, get out of here! I’m still older than you!" Yi Ru threw a pillow at her. Tan You didn’t dodge, and the pillow passed right through her body as expected, landing on the bay window behind her.
"I need to learn to be as calm as you are. Like you said, I shouldn’t make any decisions when I’m being emotional." Yi Ru flopped back onto the bed. "But I’m human. It’s impossible to stay calm all the time. In the end, it’s just too hard."
"I guess I still have a lot to learn," Yi Ru muttered to herself.
"You don’t have to be like me," Tan You said, amused. "Just be happy and live freely. That’s all that matters."
At six o’clock on Friday evening, Yi Ru arrived right on time at the hotel for her class reunion. A beautiful woman always draws attention, and whether it was her looks, her aura, or her fashion sense, Yi Ru was undeniably the most eye-catching person there.
Of course, Yi Ru was used to these kinds of stares. As a Hanfu enthusiast, she was stared at by nearly everyone whenever she went out in traditional attire. This was nothing.
"Ronghua Hall... This is it." After checking the address on her phone and seeing more than a dozen people already inside, Yi Ru pushed the door open and walked in.
"Yi Ru! It is Yi Ru, right? I can’t believe you actually came!" a man suddenly exclaimed. He strode quickly over to her. "Long time no see. I’m..."
"I know. You’re the class president." Although everyone had changed a lot, Yi Ru had looked at their old graduation photos over the past few days, so she could still recognize him.
"I can’t believe our great beauty still remembers me! Come, have a seat, have a seat!" The class president chuckled. "I even followed your account. You should follow me back."
"Sure, I’ll follow you back right now." Yi Ru liked dealing with straightforward people. She and the class president immediately followed each other back, and the awkwardness from not having seen each other in so long seemed to dissipate in an instant. It was as if they were back in their younger, carefree days.
Yi Ru’s friendly attitude and warm tone brought a wider smile to the class president’s face. "This reunion is just for our class, and almost everyone came. You were the main one we had trouble with. Every time I asked before, you always said you were too busy."
Yi Ru felt a bit helpless. "I really was incredibly busy before. I just couldn’t find the time."
The class president didn’t dwell on it. "We know you’re a busy woman. You have no idea how famous you are in our high school alumni group chat. Out of everyone, you’re the most successful. Your career is going especially well."
Yi Ru just smiled. "Everyone else is doing great, too. Aren’t you working at a state-owned enterprise now, Class President? That’s very impressive."
The class president scratched his cheek. "It’s alright..."
As the two of them chatted, a crowd quickly gathered around Yi Ru. Everyone had been out in the working world for a few years and knew what to say in what situation. Yi Ru had no intention of talking about her career, so she steered the conversation toward their high school days.
Once they started reminiscing, their current careers no longer mattered. Everyone was happy to talk about those youthful days. When their homeroom teacher, Teacher Wang, arrived, she saw them all gathered together, laughing and chatting. No one was left out, and the atmosphere was exceptionally harmonious.
She smiled. "Everyone’s here. I can’t believe I’m the last to arrive."
Yi Ru and the class president stood up at the same time and went to support Teacher Wang. The class president was surprised. "Teacher, why have you lost so much weight? Are you not feeling well?"
Teacher Wang didn’t refuse their help. "No, I’m on a diet. Don’t they say it’s a rare blessing to be slim in old age? It’s better to be a bit thinner when you’re older. It’s healthier."
Yi Ru blinked, trying hard to hide her emotions and not let the sorrow in her heart show. But the way she supported Teacher Wang became even gentler, as if she were handling a fragile piece of glass.
Teacher Wang seemed to sense something. She patted Yi Ru’s hand. "Don’t worry, I’m fine."
Yi Ru murmured a soft reply, her eyes turning a little red. As she helped Teacher Wang to her seat, a sharp-eyed classmate asked, "Yi Ru, are you crying?"
Yi Ru’s mind raced. "Yeah, I’m just so happy to see Teacher Wang, I couldn’t help it."
Teacher Wang smiled. "I’m happy to see you all, too. You’re all good kids."
She smiled and steered the conversation away from the topic, quickly asking about everyone’s current situation—their work, studies, and personal lives. Watching her, Yi Ru was suddenly filled with regret. ’Why didn’t I come to the reunions before? Why didn’t I think to visit Teacher Wang more often?’
Tan You said, "Teacher Wang didn’t attend the reunion last year. She only came this time after her diagnosis."
Some of Yi Ru’s guilt subsided. ’Is that so? Still, just seeing her makes me so sad. To be honest, she never paid that much attention to me back then, but people are strange that way.’
’Ordinarily, if I saw her, I probably wouldn’t feel much of anything. But now that I know she’s sick, my heart just aches.’
Tan You replied, "That just means you still have a soft, kind heart. Holding on to that bit of softness is a good thing."
Yi Ru sighed. ’Maybe. And that’s fine, I guess. It’s just, seeing Teacher Wang... I probably won’t be able to get over this for days.’
Tan You said, "If you’re truly upset, then just take care of her a bit more. Her first round of treatment just ended. If you’re really that concerned, find her a better doctor. Perhaps that’s the only thing you can do for her."
Yi Ru rallied her spirits. ’Okay. You find me a list of doctors later. I’ll pull some strings.’
