Before they could approach the bridge, the enemy had already crossed it and got ahead of them.

It should be noted that although the members of the Eagle Legion were adept in breathwork, their stamina was not limitless.

They indeed could wear armor while marching, but the soldiers were lazy, most of them shed their armor, intending to re-equip before battle to conserve energy.

In consideration of marching speed, Griffin gave his tacit approval to this action.

The result was, at the first clash, they were routed by a wave of Holy Wind and a spear charge that broke their front line.

Fortunately, the Eagle Legion's morale and training weren't too bad, so those soldiers who hadn't shed their armor quickly shielded and pushed back.

After ditching those three hundred guards, Griffin led his men back behind the convoy, donned some weapons and armor, and both sides prepared for continued battle.

Yet Griffin had to admit, those devil-bred thunder rods were indeed fierce, suppressing them so heavily they couldn't lift their heads.

If this continued, they estimated they could hold for another half-hour before they truly crumbled.

Griffin, who had traveled far and wide, encountered such a disgusting tactic and such detestable soldiers for the first time.

"Bring our greatsword over here... lost it, where did it go? By the crossroads. Dammit!" He kicked over an attendant, picked up an ordinary fine iron flamberge, hunching up, and gathered with the heavy-armored battleaxe warriors.

Just as the soldiers wearing heavy armor and carrying large shields were about to fill in the front line, quite abruptly, those advancing Salvation Army forces suddenly halted.

They even started to slowly retreat for reasons unknown?

Amidst the crowd's confusion, Griffin gazed at the advancing North Bow Cavalry and promptly reacted, happily straightening, turning to shout behind him, "Knights, it's the Knights, our Knights have arrived, these Bow Cavalry are covering infantry retreat."

"Commander, be careful!"

"Commander, what are you doing, Commander!"

Amid the infantry hiding behind large carts and shields, Griffin was particularly conspicuous and immediately became a target for the black warhorse-mounted Bow Cavalry.

Of course, with Griffin's many years of battlefield experience, it was impossible for him to be easily hit, especially with the shield just a few steps away. No way would he stand there to receive an arrow in his back.

Dressed in heavy armor, Griffin rolled on the spot, barely catching a few arrows.

He even had on a silk undershirt, leaving only a few bloody spots on his back.

The Bow Cavalry began their classic circling barrage tactic, orbiting the infantry back and forth, with occasional volleys of arrows showering down.

Yet as Griffin predicted, within a few minutes, while the Salvation Army was not out of sight, three hundred Knights hacked through weeds and farmland charging over.

The Bow Cavalry led by Mira immediately abandoned Griffin and his men, turning to engage those Bow Cavalry instead.

The lances pursued the horse tails; Mira's Bow Cavalry would occasionally feign shots while leading the Hired Knights to the other side.

Once the Hired Knights turned to pursue the Salvation Army, Mira would instantly lead his troops to turn back, sending a volley of arrows crashing onto the Hired Knights.

Finally, catching a breather, Griffin, with arrows in his back, began to command:

"Everyone put on armor immediately, these peasants are no simple opponents, even tougher than Vampire Pirates. You, go fetch my greatsword back right now!"

"Those Salvation Army troops haven't left yet."

"You lost it; you go fetch it back." Griffin pressed the greatsword to the attendant's neck, "Are you going or not?"

The attendant, with a grief-stricken face, ran towards where the greatsword had fallen.

Meanwhile, Griffin climbed atop a civilian wooden house's roof, regardless of the arrows, to observe the retreating Salvation Army.

They were about to vanish from sight, now estimating that chasing them would be challenging, best to regroup the entire army... Hmm?

Griffin suddenly stretched his neck, looked up at the sun, and then again at the Salvation Army's retreat direction.

The bridge they should have crossed was supposed to take the western route, why were they heading toward the southern route?

Wait, no, their guide got scared by the Knights and took the wrong path.

"Sir Knight, Sir Knight, they went the wrong way!" Griffin shouted towards Mentus leading the Knights, "The south leads to Nao'an River, a dead end, it's a dead end! Tie them down, once we arm, we can crush them."

Sweeping past Griffin, Mentus didn't reply, only the attendant beside him shook the flag at him.

Griffin knew this meant Mentus heard him.

Even if he hadn't heard, the Squire Knight would convey the message for him.

After all, wearing a thick full-coverage bird-beak helmet, it was normal for sound to be unclear, even conversations required shouting.

Watching Mentus, alongside the Hired Knights, simultaneously tangle with the Bow Cavalry while closely chasing after the Salvation Army.

Griffin was then contentedly dusting off his hands, shouting to the Messenger:

"Report back, our army's grand victory, repelled two enemy companies, preparing to pursue!"

Whilst Griffin composed the battle report, Mentus split the force into two, one continued to skirmish with the elusive Bow Cavalry, the other pursued the infantry.

The Bow Cavalry split into two groups as well, but clearly, the other lacked Mira's commanding ability, soon getting thrown off, leading them toward the Salvation Army's two Imperial Guard cohorts.

Sparse branches covered the sunlight above, light spots swiftly skimming over their helmets.

Charging in the second row, Alituge Jin Ham's heart pounded; though he was a wandering Hired Knight, he'd never abandoned his dream of becoming a Land Knight.
