Chapter 90: Chapter 90: Auntie Might Really Be Hungry

Pinehurst Estate.

Julian Fairchild sat alone to one side.

Luna Axton and Blaze Fairchild sat together, opposite Rosalind Fairchild and Miles Jacobs.

In just half a month, Miles Jacobs’s hair had turned white, and he had lost his former distinguished bearing.

"Luna, Kai’s punishment has been carried out in accordance with the law. Although he has received the punishment he deserves, the harm he caused you cannot be ignored. I am here today, as a father, to apologize for my failure to raise him properly."

Luna Axton thought back to what Blaze Fairchild had told her about the truth behind Rosalind Fairchild and Miles Jacobs’s marriage.

’In a way, the Miles Jacobs before her was a pitiful man.’

’Rosalind Fairchild was the one who had done countless wrongs; she was the one who should be apologizing.’

But she appeared completely nonchalant. Her clothes were as luxurious and elegant as ever, though her makeup was less ostentatious than before.

Miles Jacobs looked like a man crushed by hardship, yet her own demeanor showed she was completely unaffected by Kai’s imprisonment.

’Was she just that mentally resilient, or did she simply not care whether anyone in the Jacobs family lived or died?’

Luna Axton couldn’t bear to see it and simply said, "Uncle, please take care of yourself."

Miles Jacobs nodded heavily, his gaze turning to Julian Fairchild, full of guilt.

"Dad, Rosalind and I have divorced. I’ve been stripped of my post and party membership. I no longer have the ability to provide her with a good life. I couldn’t bear to have her suffer with me."

Luna Axton was astonished. ’Is Miles Jacobs completely blind? Can he not see a single one of Rosalind Fairchild’s flaws?’

Then she looked at Rosalind Fairchild. When the divorce was mentioned, Rosalind’s expression was so calm she might as well have been commenting that the day’s groceries weren’t fresh. She couldn’t care less.

When their gazes met, Rosalind shot her a provocative look before arrogantly turning away to stare at something else.

Luna Axton clenched her fists. ’Rosalind Fairchild is just too much!’

Julian Fairchild’s expression didn’t change at all upon hearing of their divorce.

"Miles, what are your plans?"

Despite Miles Jacobs keeping his distance from the Fairchild family, he had always been a reasonably dutiful son-in-law.

Coupled with Julian’s new understanding of his own daughter, it would be absurd to claim Miles Jacobs wasn’t an innocent victim for ending up with her.

"I’m going back to my family’s village to farm. Yvonne grew up at Rosalind’s side, so it’s not realistic for her to come with me. So, Yvonne will stay in Valoria to look after Rosalind."

As Miles Jacobs finished speaking, he slid from the sofa and knelt on the floor.

"Dad, I’m sorry. I failed to take good care of Rosalind. I’ve failed the trust you placed in me."

Miles Jacobs knelt so suddenly that none of the others had time to react.

Julian Fairchild sighed and got up to help him up.

"Given how things are, you’ve done the best you could. If you need anything, just let us know."

Luna Axton watched, stunned. ’If only karma were real,’ she thought. ’Then people who betray others should have their hearts pierced by a thousand arrows.’

’A heartless person like Rosalind Fairchild deserves to suffer bone-chilling, heart-piercing torture.’

"Dad, I don’t need anything. I only ask that you don’t hold any hard feelings against Rosalind. It’s my fault that she grew distant from you. After I’m gone, she’ll need you and Blaze to look after her more."

"I know, I know," Julian Fairchild repeated.

Rosalind Fairchild made a show of helping Miles Jacobs, pulling him back to his seat on the sofa. "Rest assured, I have Yvonne with me, so you don’t need to worry. Whenever you want to come back, just say the word and I’ll come get you."

’Look at that performance. Someone should give her an Oscar.’

Luna Axton watched with cold contempt.

Miles Jacobs looked at his beloved wife with deep affection. "As long as you’re well, I can be at ease."

Luna Axton looked away. ’For an official to be this blind,’ she thought, ’he deserves what’s coming to him.’

’He had failed the test of the honey trap that was Rosalind Fairchild.’

’If he couldn’t even see the true nature of the woman who slept beside him for over twenty years, how could he possibly see the people’s problems clearly?’

’Miles Jacobs’s downfall today was, in the end, a result of his own incompetence.’

Once Luna Axton realized all this, the little bit of pity she’d felt for Miles Jacobs shattered, leaving not even a trace behind.

Luna Axton couldn’t stand to watch any longer and got up to prepare the tea service.

Rosalind Fairchild followed, stopping beside Luna Axton.

She reached out and aggressively snatched the canister of Da Hong Pao tea from Luna’s hand. She then took out a box of oolong tea and placed it in Luna’s hands instead.

She tilted her chin up. "I want oolong tea."

Luna Axton raised an eyebrow and readily agreed. "Alright."

Rosalind Fairchild narrowed her eyes into a stare, a cold sneer on her lips. "Luna Axton, you can’t be this lucky forever." 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

Luna Axton fiddled with the tea leaves on the scoop, her lips twisting into a sarcastic, gloating smile.

"At least this time, I’m not the one who suffered heavy losses."

Rosalind Fairchild scoffed. "I really don’t care."

"Oh?" Luna Axton raised an eyebrow. "Then you’re in a bit of a dangerous position, aren’t you?"

Rosalind Fairchild’s hand clenched into a fist, then relaxed. "We’ll see about that."

Luna Axton placed a teacup in her hand. "Then by all means, Aunt, you lead the way. I’ll just carry the tea tray and eagerly wait to see what happens."

Rosalind Fairchild leaned closer, a dangerous glint in her eyes. She gave a provocative blink. "You’re quite interesting. Much more fun to play with than your mother was."

Luna Axton’s knuckles turned white as her fingers dug into the edge of the tea tray.

She flashed a brilliant smile. "Aunt, you must take very good care of yourself."

Rosalind Fairchild and Luna Axton returned to their seats, one after the other. Luna began to boil the water and prepare the tea, her movements practiced and graceful.

Seeing her perched on the small tea stool, Blaze Fairchild gently pulled her back onto the sofa. "Let me."

Luna Axton obliged, settling back onto the sofa. She put on a pair of thin gloves and began to peel an orange.

Luna Axton finished peeling an orange and placed it on a small plate. "Grandpa, have an orange."

But Rosalind Fairchild snatched the orange from the plate first. She gave two segments to Miles Jacobs and ate the rest herself.

Miles Jacobs held the two segments in his hand but didn’t eat them.

Seeing this, Julian Fairchild chided her, "Can’t you peel one for yourself?"

Rosalind Fairchild retorted unhappily, "She’s of the younger generation. Is peeling a single orange going to exhaust her?"

Julian Fairchild’s face flushed red with anger, and for a moment, he was too choked up to speak.

"Grandpa, I’ve already peeled another one. Eat this." In that short time, Luna Axton had already finished peeling a new orange.

She tried to placate Julian Fairchild. "Perhaps Aunt really was just hungry."

"That’s right. I haven’t had a decent meal in ages," Rosalind Fairchild said, playing along.

"Our housekeeper quit, and Yvonne’s cooking doesn’t agree with my palate. I really miss the meals from the five-star chef at Fairchild Estate."

Luna Axton’s right eyelid began to twitch violently, and for some reason, she was filled with a sense of foreboding.

As Rosalind Fairchild spoke, her eyes suddenly lit up as if she’d just had a brilliant idea. She said cheerfully,

"Dad, why don’t Yvonne and I both move into Fairchild Estate?"
