Chapter 84: Chapter 84: The Truth Will Hurt Three People

Her mother had a fever.

As soon as Luna Axton heard the news from Mrs. Creed, she got ready to head to Crimson Hall.

"Has the family doctor seen her?" Blaze Fairchild asked.

"Mrs. Axton didn’t let Grant call a doctor," Mrs. Creed said. "Grant gave her some Cold-Care Granules."

Mrs. Creed had been busy making breakfast for the Young Master and Young Madam this morning, so she didn’t know the exact situation with Mrs. Axton.

’Should I stop the Young Madam, or not?’

Grant was just told to call and mention it, so she had no choice but to report the facts to the Young Madam.

"I’ll go check on her now."

Blaze Fairchild took her hand. "I’ll go with you." 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮

Jenna Axton was sick, and Luna would surely be in a panic. He didn’t feel at ease letting her go out alone.

Blaze Fairchild put her shoes on for her, and the two of them walked toward Crimson Hall together.

Crimson Hall was quiet, and the scent of preserved egg and pork congee floated in the air.

"Grant."

"Young Madam." Grant came out at the sound of her voice, holding a soup ladle.

"How is my mother?"

"After Mrs. Axton took the medicine, she said she was cold. I raised the temperature in her room and added a small blanket on top of her."

"Crimson Hall doesn’t have any brown sugar, so I called the main kitchen. They didn’t have any either, but they’ve already sent someone out to buy some. It should be delivered soon."

Grant was very experienced when it came to colds and stomach ailments.

When someone had a cold and fever and complained of being cold, the best thing to do was to take two packets of Cold-Care Granules, drink a bowl of spicy brown sugar and ginger water, and sweat it out. Then they would be fine.

"Okay, I understand. Thank you for taking care of my mother."

Luna Axton entered the room, while Blaze Fairchild tactfully remained in the living room.

"Mom."

Jenna Axton was wrapped up tightly in her blankets, with only her head showing. She was wearing a wool knit hat.

Jenna Axton slowly lifted her eyelids to look at her, but even this simple movement seemed to cause her pain.

Luna Axton’s brows furrowed, her heart clenching. "How are you feeling?"

"My whole body feels cold, everything aches when I move, and even my scalp hurts."

"Why didn’t you let a doctor see you?" Luna Axton squeezed her mother’s hand.

The anxiety and worry from when her mother had been hospitalized suddenly rushed back to her the moment she saw her bedridden again.

So familiar, and so painful.

"If a doctor comes, they’ll just prescribe strong medicine. And strong medicine always has major side effects. I’ve worked so hard to get my body back in good health, I don’t want to ruin it over a single cold."

"Besides, I’ve been in great health since I left the hospital. This cold is a good chance to boost my immune system. Once spring comes and the weather warms up, I’ll exercise properly, and my body will get stronger and stronger, just like before."

Jenna Axton said all this to comfort her.

Luna Axton just watched her. Her mother’s eyes weren’t yellow, nor was her skin. Other than a high temperature, there were no other symptoms.

"Mom, let me take your pulse." If there was anything abnormal, she could discuss it with Dean Frost.

"Okay." Jenna Axton turned her hand over.

Luna Axton took her mother’s pulse on both her left and right wrists. She carefully checked her fingernails and palms, and lifted her eyelids to look. Only then did her heart finally settle.

The pulse was superficial and tight. Chills, fever, and body aches—all symptoms consistent with a wind-cold attack affecting the exterior.

"Grant will be making you some brown sugar and ginger water soon. You just need to sweat a little. Once you start sweating, your temperature will come down."

A happy smile touched the corners of Jenna Axton’s lips. "Mm-hmm."

"What were you doing last night? How did you manage to catch a cold?" Luna Axton asked, suspicious.

"You were on your phone last night too, weren’t you, Luna?"

Luna Axton nodded.

"I was so worried when I found out you were being cyberbullied, but you looked so relaxed that I didn’t ask too much about it."

"I was sitting in bed watching videos online last night and lost track of time. I guess I caught a chill and got sick."

Jenna Axton held her hand. "Luna, I just knew it. You’re so outstanding and beautiful, I knew that someone even more capable would come along to protect you in this life."

When a man is handsome, he receives preferential treatment everywhere because of his looks.

But for women, it’s the opposite. Being too dazzlingly beautiful attracts a lot of trouble.

With a daughter as intelligent and beautiful as mine, it would be fine if she never married. But if she did, an ordinary family wouldn’t be able to protect her.

"Mom," Luna Axton said, a little embarrassed.

She and her mother had never discussed the topic of significant others.

In Luna Axton’s subconscious, it was a forbidden topic.

Because she had no father, and her mother had no husband.

Their family was different from others.

She had been clearly aware of this since kindergarten.

Other families had three people; theirs had two.

"You’ve spent less time with me recently, but you’ve been spending that time on yourself instead of worrying and running around for me, and that makes me very happy."

"A girl should strive for her own sake without hesitation, always put herself first, love herself, and make herself a better person."

Luna Axton nodded emphatically. "I know, Mom."

"I can tell you this: your biological father is not a subpar man. He is an exceptionally outstanding person, the kind rarely seen in this world. You have no reason to feel inferior about your origins."

Luna Axton’s grip on her mother’s hand tightened, and her expression went blank with shock.

This was the first time she had ever heard her mother speak of her biological father.

She also knew this might be the last time her mother would ever bring up the topic of her father.

Because now she had her own family, and she had Blaze Fairchild to protect her.

Therefore, her biological father was no longer that important.

Her mother’s proactiveness was a way of telling her not to ask questions about her biological father in the future.

"I understand, Mom." To say she didn’t want to know who her biological father was would be a lie. But what good would knowing do now?

She had lived with her mother for twenty-two years and had never once met her father.

If her biological father had truly wanted to know how her mother was doing, twenty-two years was more than enough time for him to find her.

Her mother’s reluctance to let her know who he was probably meant that her mother’s heart had been viciously broken by someone.

Since finding her biological father would make her mother sad, and twenty-two years had already passed, there was no need for her to go looking.

Her mother’s health, happiness, and safety were more important than anything else.

"Mom, I can take good care of myself. Besides, Blaze Fairchild is emotionally stable, and he’s very good at handling problems."

Hearing this, tears unexpectedly slid from the corners of Jenna Axton’s eyes.

’Sometimes, I really wish my daughter were a little less perceptive, a little dumber.’

Luna Axton started to cry too. All the unsaid words were contained in the tears of the mother and daughter.

Luna Axton took a tissue and gently wiped away her mother’s tears.

"Mom, you have to get better. I’m scared when you’re sick."

"I’ll be more careful in the future." After talking so much, Jenna Axton’s throat felt even worse. "I sealed up the tri-color taro balls and put them in the fridge. Remember to take them with you."

"Okay."

Luna Axton stayed at Crimson Hall until it was almost time for her to leave.

During that time, Blaze Fairchild also went in and out, helping take care of her mother and assisting Luna Axton.

By the time they left, Jenna Axton’s fever had already subsided a little.

Grant helped her change out of her sweat-dampened pajamas, planning to give her a hot bath only after the fever broke completely.

Jenna Axton watched her daughter’s departing figure, her heart filled with guilt.

’Luna, I’m so sorry.’

’The truth would hurt all three of us.’

’Luna, just wait a little longer.’

’When the time is right, I will tell you.’
